FIRST THOUGHTS David Hull, Pastor On the shelf in my office I have a hymnal that has special meaning. It is the 1956 Baptist Hymnal that was given to me by my home church in Louisville, Kentucky. I was in the children’s choir at the church and this hymn book was given to me to mark a transition in my growth as a young musician. It has my name stamped in gold. For years I used that book with pride when I would play hymns on my piano or sing carols at Christmas time. It still is a treasure of mine. It represents my past, my home, my beginning faith. I have another hymnbook with words stamped in gold on the cover. It is the 1991 The Baptist Hymnal. The words on the cover say PraiSing, South Carolina, May 17, 1991, A Church Music Celebration. This hymnal is the same one that we have used in our Sanctuary for the past twenty years through last Sunday. When it was first published we lived in South Carolina. Jane was very involved in the Baptist State Convention music ministry at that time and we attended the launch/dedication of the new hymnal in the basketball arena of the University of South Carolina. My hymn book commemorates that event. It reminds me of ministry in South Carolina. I have just added a new hymn book to my shelves. Celebrating Grace: Hymnal for Baptist Worship will be the hymnal for our church beginning this Sunday. On Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. we will have a dedication service for the new hymnal in our sanctuary. This book will be an instrument that will be used for the worship and praise of God for the next twenty years. It is an excellent hymnal. I hope that you will join with our entire Music Ministry for this special Dedication service on Sunday night. The service will be an opportunity to thank all who have made this new hymnal possible. More importantly, it will be a chance for all of us to raise our voices in song as we worship God together. Hymnals seem to mark the passage of time in my life. I began singing the hymns of the faith using a book that was published one year after I was born. Now a new chapter begins. I look forward to continuing our worship of God as we use a new instrument of praise together.
