Edgehi l l churches - Loving God, Serv ing People , Growing Community
St Peter’s and benefice web site- www.edgehillchurches.org
Over the last week the level of concern over the corona-
virus has stepped up more than a few notches. The news
headlines continue to be dominated by the topic and so-
cial media is full of questions and comments about it;
some helpful, some humorous and some just daft.
It is hard to keep up with the pace of change and the
implications of those changes. Early last week the
churches closed for public worship and other social ven-
ues were ordered to close. Because people are still not
following the social distancing guidelines, the government
is warning that it might need to go down the route of
other countries and enforce them.
The knock on effect of these changes has been huge
and I am sure we all know people who have lost jobs, or
whose businesses have been destroyed by the economic
impact of the virus. And there is more to come.
As a friend of mine put it, “It feels like I’m the co-star in
a really **** disaster movie!”
In my lifetime I have never seen anything like the impact
that this is having on society. And I know that a lot of
people are worried and fearful as the virus continues to
spread. However, the human race has faced many similar
challenges of disease, or war (and more) in the past, with
nothing like the resources and infrastructure we have
today.
A crisis like this seems to bring out the worst and the
best in human behaviour. We see the worst in the panic
buying and in people unwilling to take the social distanc-
ing advice. We see the best in the way that people are
helping each other.
Alongside all of the ‘dark’ news coverage there have
been reports of people all over the country setting up
community support groups to look out for and support
their neighbours. As I phone round our local villages to
see what they have in place, I am impressed over and
over again by the massive sense of community spirit as
people recognise that we are all in this together and look
to help one another.
In his sermon on 22nd March the Archbishop of Can-
terbury warned that if we look inwards, “...we will only
April 2020
reveal the limits of our own resources and that will lead
to deeper fear and selfishness.”
Where is your focus?
When we turn our eyes outwards to those around us,
it helps to set us free from our fears and helps others
around us to do the same. It is why such behaviour is in
the heart of Jesus’ teaching when he commands his fol-
lowers to Love their neighbour.
If we are currently in a disaster movie, then we are
entering the darker parts of the story, where the prob-
lems are mounting and the way forward seems impossi-
ble. A time when many of the dodgy characters in the
movie will be looking after themselves and ignoring the
needs of others. But the heroes of the film always find a
way forward, care for those around them, and in the end
they triumph over adversity.
So as we follow the guidelines on social distancing, and
as we enter into the darker parts of this story, can I en-
courage you to seek out ways of looking out for others
around you. You might be self isolating, but there are
many people that would welcome a phone call, or a posi-
tive message by email or Facebook. Contact your parish
council, your community support groups or local church
leaders and ask what you can do to help. There is more
about this on page 3.
In short love like Jesus… but wash your hands like
Pontius Pilate!

Businesses do their best to keep serving us
We are fortunate to live in a great village with a strong commu-
nity spirit and that has shone through all the more in the face of
the coronavirus outbreak.
As part of the response to that outbreak Kineton Parish
Council is working together with the churches and local peo-
ple to provide ways that we can support those in need in our
community.
One of the ways that we want to do that is to encourage
people to look out for their vulnerable neighbours.
A dedicated phone number and email address have been set
up and both will be checked at least 4 times each day.
Can you help?
If you think you can help please contact us either by ringing
07391 549598 or emailing [email protected]
Please give your name, address, phone number and email ad-
dress (if you have one) and please make it clear that you are
offering to help. We will get back to you with suggestions of
who you could help and in what way.
Do you need help?
If you are self isolating for any of the recommended reasons
(see Page 7) and need some help please ring the same number
07391 549598 or email [email protected] giving
your name, address and contact details. Also give us a short

In the coming weeks and months many people in our communities will be very dependent on their friends and neighbours for support. The #LoveYourNeighbour cards can be found in many local shops and the church porch. They are in packs of 8 cards with space for you to add your contact details. Please take a pack, add your details and drop them round to your neighbours. Schools, theatres, cinemas, museums, pubs, clubs, non-essential
shops, cafes and restaurants have closed and social events have
been cancelled in order to drastically cut social contact and limit
the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
It’s a worrying and stressful time for everyone. But village
shops and businesses are doing their best to keep going and
provide extra reassurances and services to help their customers.
Sadly our village pubs and restaurants, which have tried to
keep going with takeaway services, now have to close, as have
our hairdressers and Flower Thyme.
However Lewis Butchers is open and offering free local
deliveries to those people at risk who don’t want to visit the
shop. Ring 01926 640228 to place an order. Select Conven-
ience and the Post Office are open and also offering to deliv-
er orders to the elderly and vulnerable. You can put your re-
quest in over the phone on 01926 640256.
The Co-Op is open and has introduced a new priority shop-
ping hour from 9.30am to 10.30am Monday to Friday for the
elderly, their carers, the vulnerable and at risk. The store is also
advertising for more staff to help cope with the increase in busi-
ness.
Kineton Optometrists are running an emergency only ser-
vice, if you need emergency treatment please contact them by
phone (01926 641093), do not call in.
Nifty Needle will be working behind closed doors to fulfil
orders but the shop is closed.
The estate agents are operating closed door policies but are
working by phone and on-line.
The Vets have brought in a host of safety measures and are
asking all clients to contact them by phone in the first instance,
whatever their requirements, so safe arrangements can be made
(phone 01926 641000 or 01926 330179)
And, perhaps most importantly, the Pharmacy is open and
working hard to help look after us all but is asking people who
have, or think they
may have, symptoms
of the Covid-19 virus
not to visit the shop
in person. They have
been a bit overrun by
people doubling up
on their prescription
orders and have
asked customers if
they would please
order normally.

explanation of the help you might need.
We are on a very tight learning curve and there will be
more information about the support we are able to
offer across the area in the coming days and weeks.
But, as a start point, we wanted to encourage people to
look out for their neighbours and we hope that making
the connections is the first place to start.
Please – keep up to date with and follow all the guid-
ance being offered by the relevant authorities (eg Gov-
ernment and NHS) in newspapers, on the TV and radio.

As hospitals gear up and doctors’ surger-
ies bring in measures to limit the spread
of the virus, and across the county our
emergency services bring in new strate-
gies to ensure people’s safety, it’s good to
know that our own volunteer Community
First Responders are still putting them-
selves in the front line to save lives.
Kineton volunteer James O’Neill told
the Outlook that they all understood the
risks they were taking but first and fore-
most they wanted to help the community.
“For us, it is still very much business as
usual and it is very important that this
message gets out there,” James explained.
“Our responders are putting themselves
at personal risk as volunteers and obvi-
ously the safest option for us is to stay at
home but, like our frontline NHS col-
leagues, we understand fully what our re-
sponsibility is and we accept the risks we
might encounter doing our part to help the West Midland
Ambulance Service and our Communities.”
James said he had recently attended two cardiac arrests
locally within an hour of each other. “Response times
were less than 6 minutes for both - an 83-year-old patient
and a 74 year-old. I carried out life support on both of
these patients and worked closely with the Ambulance
Crews and the Helicopter medical team when they ar-
rived. Both patients are thought to be making a good re-
covery in hospital at the moment. If we had withdrawn
from the front line the outcome could have been totally
different!”
It isn’t entirely business as usual though. James wants to
alert people that they will be wearing face masks, gloves,
goggles and aprons when they attend anyone who is dis-
playing serious symptoms which could be as a result of the
Covid-19 virus. He doesn’t want anyone to be alarmed, as
it won’t mean they definitely have the virus, but it is a nec-
essary precaution as it is vital that the responders them-
selves can avoid becoming ill and can keep working.
There will also be a lot of extra cleaning and sanitizing to
ensure the safety of both responders and patients.
NB Please read the NHS guidance on page 7 carefully.
Do not call the emergency services unless you are seriously
unwell. If you think you may have Coronavirus symptoms you
need to stay at home and isolate yourself from other people so
you do not pass it on. There is no treatment or medicine yet to
get rid of the virus but the NHS believes most people will make
a full recovery, using over the counter medicines if they need to
to relieve their symptoms as they would with any other flu virus.
The emergency services are there to help those whose symp-
toms become life-threatening or who need urgent help.
Please read the NHS advice in full on the next page.

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and
airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus.
Stay at home to stop coronavirus spreading
Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of corona-
virus. This includes people of all ages – even if you do not have
any symptoms or other health conditions.
You can only leave your home:
to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to
to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or
cycle, alone or with other people you live with
for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or
deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person
to travel to and from work – but only where this is abso-
lutely necessary
What to do if you have coronavirus symptoms
Continue to stay at home if you have either:
a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on
your chest or back (you do not need to measure your
temperature)
a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for
more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24
hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than
usual)
To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, phar-
macy or hospital. Stay at home.
Use the 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do.
Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.
What to do if you need medical help for another reason
If you need medical help not related to coronavirus, do not go
to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.
For health information and advice, use the NHS website or
check your GP surgery website.
For urgent medical help, use the NHS 111 online service. Only
call 111 if you're unable to get help online.
For life-threatening emergencies, call 999 for an ambulance.
Advice for people at high risk
If you're at high risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus,
there are extra things you should do to avoid catching it.
These include:
not leaving your home – you should not go out to do shop-
ping, visit friends or family, or attend any gatherings
avoiding close contact with other people in your home as
much as possible
Read the full advice on protecting yourself if you're at high risk
from coronavirus on GOV.UK.
Who is at high risk?
You may be at high risk from coronavirus if you:
have had an organ transplant
are having certain types of cancer treatment
have blood or bone marrow cancer, such as leukaemia
have a severe lung condition, such as cystic fibrosis or severe
asthma
have a condition that makes you much more likely to get infec-
tions
are taking medicine that weakens your immune system
are pregnant and have a serious heart condition
If you're at high risk, you will be contacted by the NHS by Sun-
day 29 March 2020. Do not contact your GP or healthcare team
at this stage – wait to be contacted.
Other things you can do to stop the infection spreading
DWash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at
least 20 seconds
Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not
your hands) when you cough or sneeze
Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands
afterwards
Stay 2 metres (3 steps) away from other people, if you need to
go outside
Don'DO NOT touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands
are not clean
How coronavirus is spread
Because it's a new illness, we do not know exactly how corona-
virus spreads from person to person.
Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.
It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or
food.
Pregnancy advice
If you're pregnant and worried about coronavirus, you can get
advice about coronavirus and pregnancy from the Royal College
of Obstretricians and Gynaecologists.
Treatment for coronavirus
There is currently no specific treatment for coronavirus.
Antibiotics do not help, as they do not work against viruses.
Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms while your body fights
the illness.
You'll need to stay in isolation, away from other people, until
you have recovered.
Get an isolation note to give to your employer
If you live with someone who has symptoms of coronavirus, you
can get an isolation note to send to your employer as proof you
need to stay off work.
You do not need to get a note from a GP.
Get an isolation note
Information:
If you have symptoms of coronavirus and need to stay at home,
use the 111 coronavirus service to get an isolation note.

With an increasing need for car ownership, particularly in
a rural community, and the associated requirement for
places to park, we now have an issue in our village which
has led many of us to park on the pavement,
Obstructing the highway is an offence; however the local
police would prefer to work with the parish council and
community rather than taking action against anyone who is
parking across part of the pavement.
The parish council is keen to make sure that the re-
quirements of everyone can be recognised without need-
ing to ask the police to take action. They are therefore
asking everyone to consider, when parking, that the pave-
ments should be left clear for all pedestrians, particularly
those with children, prams and pushchairs, as well as users
of mobility buggies, and that it should be possible for any-
one with sight impairment to walk along without risk to
their safety.
If you find that a pavement is seriously obstructed please call
101 at the time, with the description and registration number
of the vehicle. Photographic evidence could also be helpful.
Smiles were brought to the
faces of staff and customers
alike when 'The world's fast-
est shed' popped into Gilks'
Garage Café for a quick refu-
el.
The record breaking shed,
which appeared on Top Gear
the same day, is reported to
have had a full service and
MOT. Regulars of the café
will know that really means a
full english and mug of tea!
The famous record break-
ing shed broke its own speed
record in September 2018 reaching a speed of 101.581
mph on Pendine Sands, Wales, is regularly seen on TV and
has just secured a sponsorship deal with First Stop Tyres.
The shed's visit caused excitement amongst the café's
customers, especially children who couldn't believe what
they seeing. Staff and customers are looking forward to
the next time the shed visits on its travels around the
countryside from its home in Chipping Norton. Sadly that
may be some time away as, along with other restaurants
and cafes, Gilks’s has had to close temporarily because of
the emergency Coronavirus measures.

sponsored by Seccombes in aid of the charity Phabkids.
The 21 teams made it a sell-out evening at the Village
Hall on February 29th , and will help the charity continue
to support disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy
activities and holiday projects together.
Boo and Justin will be running their first ever mara-
thon in London (although it has been postponed to Oc-
tober) in aid of Phabkids and have already exceeded
their fund-raising target of £1,850 each.
Other funds have come from the “May I” card nights,
organised by Miranda Williams, along with many indi-
vidual donations. A Pop-Up Supper is also planned.
A delighted Boo commented: “I still can’t believe how
much we raised at the Quiz Night, it exceeded all our
expectations. We are very grateful to everyone who
supported the event”.
“We will carry on fund-raising and getting sponsorship
to raise as much as we can for Phabkids, which supports
families like ours”.

Kineton churches came together on Friday March 6th to take
part in the World Day of Prayer 2020.
Throughout the world, Christians were participating in the
service that Christians in Zimbabwe had put together. We
learnt Shona language (kwazi wy for hello) and also learnt
that many difficulties are affecting daily life for ordinary peo-
ple in Zimbabwe.
We offered our prayers to support them, our minds to
understand their situation and our money to go a little way
to help the needs of the disadvantaged there.
Each year a new country makes new preparations and we
all make a new commitment. Join us next year and be part
of a worldwide event to make a difference and bring us clos-
er together.
Day of Prayer reaches out
After years of protracted negotiations with Bloor
Homes the Parish Council has at last taken owner-
ship of the public open spaces around Kineton Mead-
ows.
Contractors have started to bring the main land-
scaped area back under control and the allotments
will be made fit for purpose. Many will have ob-
served the flimsy sheds on their sides!
Within a few weeks Kineton will have flourishing
allotments at two ends of the village as the new
owners have confirmed that the Banbury Road allot-
ments (pictured above) will be allowed to continue.
