DISTRICT DIRECTORS
Gold Wing Road Riders Association
We welcome all riders, no matter what make or model you ride!
Back to our Future 40th birthday
By now most of all of our members heard the news that WA-District has lost 5 chapters. Yes, we did and we would love to get them back some day but for now we need to take
care of the chapters that we have left open. One way we can accomplish this is recruiting new members. I know I'm preaching to the choir but we all need to work at this. I would like every chapter to set up a recruiting day at their local motorcycle shop and if you do not have a local shop search for one to hold this event. We all see bikes as we ride around and yes, I know it's a pain to go talk to them but please try. Garry Alexander has plenty of flyers and signup cards to go around and you can order them from Arizona for free so please do so. I have been thinking about another WA-District staff meeting to include all Chapter Director's because they are District staff and we need their help. So, on the 14th of March at 12:00 noon in Rochester at 7505 183rd ZIP 98579, First Student bus yard. we will have a meeting and if your chapter has taken on a responsibility for District and you cannot make it, then you need to send me an update as to your progress on said task. Things I need help with: your district needs to fill these positions District Trainer and First Aid trainer.
I understand that some of our members have questions about Group Works and most of them can be answered if you ask the right person and that would be Vic Par, [email protected]. Mr. Parr is the lead person for Group Works. I have also been talking with WA District MEC Kaye Lincoln and she has indicated that she is not getting MEC reports back from CD's and when she does get them they are not complete. While you are working to make our jobs easer please keep in mind that, like you, we have volunteered. Thank you. Please be sure to include the MOU dates and any other information that the report asks for. We have the opportunity to take the RCIT in Canada this April & May see below.
The District Rally registration is on the web site and we need your support. Remember, this is your Rally and it’s our 40th birthday. Let’s make it great.
2
We have a Great Sea Hawk picture for raffle to make money for your rally. Also the scavenger hunt is going on until District Rally. We are working on a great time at rally.

Gold Wing Road Riders Association Updating Personal Information at Home Office
It is important to keep your profile current with Home Office. If you have move, changed your e-mail address or phone number, please alert Home Office. This document will assist you in that process. You can do this in one of three ways: 1. Call Customer Service: 1-800-843-9460
2. Email Customer Service: [email protected]
3. Go online: http://www.gwrra.org/members
To update your information online: If you have never logged on to this sight, you will first need to obtain log-in information. This can be done by clicking on the Welcome (Log-in) page where instructed. After you complete this process you will receive an email with your user name and password. After you have received your user name and password return to the Log-in page and on the left side of the screen click on “Manage My Records”. Click Continue. Enter your user Name and password. Click Continue. At the Choose prompt, select the drop-down menu and choose “Modify My Record” and click on the “Go” button. After you have made your changes click the Submit Changes button. This will update your information. When you have completed all the changes you need to make, be sure to log off. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Customer Service at the phone number or email address listed above.
Updating Your Chapter Affiliation with Home Office Your Chapter affiliation is automatically assigned using your zip code. You may find that the Chapter that feels
most like “family” to you is not necessarily the Chapter to which you were automatically assigned. Many
individuals don’t bother to change their affiliation (also called an “override”), but there are some excellent
reasons to change your affiliation to your Chapter of choice. For example, if your chosen Chapter is participating
in the Chapter of the Year program, it can benefit them to have you on their Area Report List if you are an active
Chapter participant. If you wish to serve your chapter in an Officer position, you will also want to change your
Chapter affiliation. To change your Chapter affiliation, contact Customer Service at 1-800-843-9460.

ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTORS
Greetings All,
Well Chapter O survived its first chapter meeting at their new digs,
Everybody’s on Mile Hill. They had a great turn out with over 40 people
there, including, chapter B, Z and District representatives. Jesse V., the DD,
swore in Bob Minor as the newest Assistant Chapter Director for O. It will
be nice to have Bob on their staff; I know he has lots to bring to the table.
Also, a big change for Chapter B. They have moved back to the 1st Saturday of the month for their meeting day.
They will be at the All-Star Lanes in Silverdale. Their Breakfast is at 9:00 and their meeting is at 10:00.
The weather is not changing for the better yet, we’ve had over 6 inches of rain so far for January (27th) and the
norm in a little over 5. So, keep dry out there. Pretty quiet out here this month
That’s it for now so we’ll see you down the road.

TREASURER AND DISTRICT RALLY
COORDINATOR
FINANCES AND RALLIES
I have received some of the Chapter Financials for 2019. I am still missing some so please, if you haven’t sent
them yet, get them to me.
The rally is starting to come together. The theme this year is “BACK TO OUR FUTURE”. It is also Washington
District’s 40th birthday. We are trying to get some members that haven’t been to a rally or a Chapter Gathering
for a while to come and join us. All of us know somebody like that. Contact them and get them to come to the
rally, even if they don’t ride anymore. We don’t care if they come by stagecoach or train, we would like to have
them come. We have decided that we want the former District Directors and former Region Directors to come
and enjoy the rally on us. So, they can get free registration and a free dinner Saturday night. We also want to
thank our current Chapter Directors and have offered free Saturday night dinner to them. We are going to have
a FUN, FUN time. Will have some more information next month. We are going to have (2) grand prizes, like we
did last year. We will have one for $300 and one for $700. We will have a silent auction and a brown bag auction
this year. And at the leadership meeting this past fall, the Chapter Directors asked us to have the opening
ceremonies on Friday afternoon instead of in the morning. We will give it a try and see how it goes. Chapter A
is providing us some great rides. What better group to do the rides than Chapter A. These guys are always
riding all over the state. More information to come about the rides. Chapter O will hold the bike show
downtown. After the light parade, we are hoping to have the light show downtown. The flyer is out and
available on line. We have 2 Sisters Catering from Oregon doing our breakfasts Friday and Saturday and we
have GBF Catering doing our Saturday night dinner. For Thursday and Friday Dinners we want you to enjoy the
many diverse types of restaurants in Port Townsend or enjoy dinner in your camping area. After dinner Saturday
night and before the closing ceremonies, we will have birthday cake and ice cream. More info on the rally
coming soon. If you have any ideas on things you might want to have at the rally, let us know.
Have a safe ride and a good day.

RIDER EDUCATION
RIDER EDUCATION AND RISK MANAGEMENT
So what’s Rider Education all about? Is it Advance Rider Course? Learning how to be a Safe Rider in slow
maneuver situations? Trike Rider Course? Learning how to maneuver those huge machines in tight quarters?
Is it about the riding gear we wear while enjoying the ride? Helmet, coat, gloves, boots, ATGATT? TCLOCK?
Safety equipment on the motorcycle, lights, chrome, and more lights? Being visible to other motorists, and
impressing our fellow riders?
Rider Education is also about Rider Risk Management. In Wing World magazine, Febuary 2020 Page 32&33 (By
Zach Bon), is a great article about that subject. The article talks about the responsibility of the Road Captain
and the Tail Gunner. Risk Management applies to you the rider, also. If your bike is not safe to ride, is there a
risk? If you, the rider, are not properly protected, are you at risk? If your health is not at its best, are you at
risk? We always hear talk about white lines and wet manhole covers in winter when there’s a safety talk but
what about our health? My health came into play this last year that took me off the bike for a while. Cancer
stuck its ugly head up and bit me. All because I didn’t take care of myself. So, I Guess all the above is a Risk we
take when we ride those Beautiful Machines.
So, take a minute to think through all the risk around you and do something about it. Ride as if you are riding
for 5 people around you. Always looking for the way out. I can’t stress safety enough. Take care of your bike
and yourself so as to be able to ride for a long season of fun on our machines. Be ready for the season to come.
RIDE ON….

MOTORIST AWARENESS
WATCH FOR US
Let me begin by saying Happy New Year! Let it be a GREAT ONE!
While driving around the last couple of days I have been surprised to see some bikes on the road, and to think I
really look for them. Just think about the people who don’t think about looking for us.
This is why we, as people who do ride, should always try to make others, who we share the road with, aware to
the fact that we could appear at any time.
I believe this can be helped by always being open to meeting new people, and share with them your love of
riding. This can be people whom you know don’t ride, like at church or other functions you are at.
You would not believe how many people want to know why we love
to ride. Then after you share your reasons, they are more likely to
watch for those of us who do ride more. This also opens up
opportunities for you to hand out tri-folds, and stickers for them to
read, place on their vehicles, and to hand out to their friends.
I have met others this way who I did not know also rode motorcycles. They, in turn, have then handed out our
information and stickers to their friends. This is really great when you see these stickers on cars you do not
know, and see tri-folds in places you have not been in before.
This also opens up opportunities for future functions for your Chapter to participate in. Like Bike Awareness
day at a car dealer, who you stopped in to just look at a new vehicle, which turns into something both of you
could benefit from.

It is snowing now and I wish it was nice and warm out, as I do miss riding!
This is the time when we should be kicking back and preparing ourselves for
riding season!
This includes preparing ourselves to read up on the new hardware, and
clothing, that will make us be seen and, and safer for the next riding season.
It does not mean it is time to forget Motorist Awareness and stop us from
handing out material, and knowledge, to the people who we will share the
road with.
Thank You

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATOR
MEMBER’S AT LARGE
This seems like a new term doesn’t it. In Washington
State we have had five Chapter’s relinquish their Chapter Charter this past year. This does not mean we have
lost those members, because they are still members of our GWRRA family. We choose to be Chapter
Participants of a certain chapter, but we all are members of GWRAA family. When your Chapter no longer
exists, you can join another chapter or become a MEMBER AT LARGE, still as a GWRRA Member.
It’s so difficult to see this happen, yet maybe it’s not always a “bad” thing. We all know in GWRRA we are an
ageing group and there are some chapters where there are no younger members to step up and take the helm.
Maybe, just maybe, that’s not always a bad thing. The idea that we should hang on no matter what isn’t always
a good idea either. We have to credit those Chapters who are wise enough to see the end and embrace it with
wisdom and pride. They have done all they could to keep membership alive and well. So often that falls on the
back of one or two people and that is so difficult. They usually live in area of dwindling population or where
employment has changed drastically as well. Let’s give them credit for their hard work and support the decision
they have made. It’s is never an easy decision.
For those remaining members I am trying to contact you. As Washington Membership Enhancement Co-
Ordinator I want to associate you with any chapter you wish to ride with or be a part of any chapter functions.
If you choose to be a Member-At-Large (MAL) please let me know. You will be listed as a Washington State
Member, but have no Chapter Affiliation. You are always welcome to participate with any chapter you choose.
You can find information on the WA-GWRRA website and on Group Works that will keep you aware of ALL the
chapter activities. Please contact me at e-mail: [email protected] or by phone: (509) 220-6709.
Thank You All,

PHISHING
The word phishing was coined around 1996 by hackers stealing
America Online accounts and passwords. ... Hackers commonly
replace the letter f with ph, a nod to the original form of hacking
known as phone phreaking.
Phishing is a type of social engineering attack often used to
steal user data, including login credentials and credit card numbers. It occurs when an attacker, masquerading
as a trusted entity, dupes a victim into opening an email, instant message, or text message.
Phishing scams use email and text messages that appear to be from a legitimate organization
you do business with or a person you know. ... Clicking on a link or opening an attachment in one of these
messages may install malware, like viruses, spyware, or ransomware, on your device.
How can you tell if a e-mail is real or fake?
Here are some you should know about:
1. Incorrect URL. Hackers use fake sites to steal your information. ...
2. Nosy Requests. Your bank won't ask via email for your PINs or card information. ...
3. Sender's Email Address. ...
4. Your Name. ...
5. Typos. ...
6. Fake Password. ...
7. Low Resolution Images.
Examples: Phishing email / Phishing website
• Generic greeting. Phishing emails are usually sent in large batches. ...
• Forged link. Even if a link has a name you recognize somewhere in it, it doesn't mean it links to the real organization. ...
• Requests personal information. ...
• Sense of urgency.
7 Steps to Take Now if You're the Victim of a Phishing Scheme
12
1. TAKE A DEEP BREATH. ...
2. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. ...
3. CONTACT THE ORGANIZATION THAT WAS SPOOFED. ...
4. SCAN YOUR COMPUTER FOR VIRUSES. ...
5. WATCH OUT FOR WARNING SIGNS OF IDENTITY THEFT. ...
6. FILE A REPORT WITH THE FTC. ...
7. PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST FUTURE PHISHING SCHEMES.
How to Report Phishing
• If you got a phishing email, forward it to the FTC at [email protected] and to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at [email protected]. If you got a phishing text message, forward it to SPAM (7726).
• Report the phishing attack to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.
• Suspicious emails to paypal • If you believe you've received a phishing email, follow these steps right away: Forward the
entire email to [email protected]. Do not alter the subject line or forward the message as an
attachment. Delete the suspicious email from your inbox.

Often times we overlook the smallest details in our lives that can have the most dramatic effect on our livelihood. I realize that our District Rider Educators provide us with very good information and at times it is related to current situations. I found the following article in a pamphlet and felt compelled to share it with the members. If you know someone who could use the assistance that is provided by this organization, please let them read this article or pass the information on to them. •
Keep Warm! As you get older, it gets harder to sense a
change in temperature. Your ability to
shiver diminishes, making it harder to
maintain your body temperature.
Unfortunately, this can make seniors more
susceptible to hypothermia.' Hypothermia
occurs when your body loses heat faster
than it can produce it. It is important to recognize the warning signs of hypothermia. They include confusion,
shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and muscle stiffness.
Hypothermia doesn't only happen outdoors. Being in a place colder than your body for a long time can lead to
hypothermia if you aren't dressed for the weather. To keep your body warm, wear layers like sweaters, hats,
long underwear, or other items of clothing. Set your thermostat to at least 68-
70 degrees Fahrenheit so your home is warm enough to keep you healthy.
Many seniors are on a limited income, which can make paying the heating bill difficult. Low Income Home
Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) may be able to help lower-income households pay their heating bill in
the winter.
The Washington State Low-Income Weatherization program can help you make improvements to your home,
helping to keep cold out and warmth in. If your home doesn't have enough insulation, they can help
weatherize your home. These improvements can help save energy and keep heating bills down.
To learn more about LlHEAP or the Weatherization Program, call the Washington State Department of
Commerce at 360-725- 2857, visit their website at: commerce.wa.gov or contact your local community action
agency.

DISTRICT COUPLE OF THE YEAR
Be Careful Out There
Riding in Fall and Winter months bring extra challenges and concerns when it comes to being safe. I have been making up lost riding time in the last 2 months racking up over 2500 miles. In that time I have been in conditions that put my riding skills to the test. Wet roads, cold temps and fallen leaves on the road. All these make for slippery situations we need to watch out for. I pay attention to news reports and posts about
motorcycle accidents. I am saddened when I hear about them and wonder what it was that caused these fatal accidents. In some cases when the cause is known, it will be part of the story. Many are from cars pulling out or turning in front of the bike rider. Another I just read was from a Deer impact. Just last week for me when riding to work at 3:20 AM, a Deer strolled across the road in front of me about 40 feet. This was in a largely populated area on a main road on Kent’s East Hill. Not the place we see Deer often and very surprising for me. I was not going fast and there was enough distance that it was not really a danger to me but it was close enough that I got a clear look at how large this Doe was. Fallen leaves are a real danger when you are in a turn or have to stop fast, they can be as slippery as gravel or oil on the road. Pay attention and slow down when hazards are in your path, it could be the difference between crashing and making it home safe.
Plans are underway for our District Rally for 2020. This time we are gathering in Port Townsend at the Jefferson County Fair Grounds. The town is a great place for a rally due to the many activities and sights to see. The temperature is cooler and the fairgrounds has nice areas of grass to set up camp. There are campsites available with power hook ups and the grassy areas will be dry camping with power spider boxes available. This year’s theme is based on the Districts 40th Birthday and each Chapter will be asked to decorate based on the year they were chartered. There will be a host hotel with special rates plus others in the local area for those who can’t or don’t want to camp at the fairgrounds. We need to do our best to come out in force and support this Rally. The 40th Birthday is a big deal. There will be all the favorite events and activities plus a few more new things. The meals will be catered so everyone can enjoy the time instead of toiling in the Kitchen preparing meals. There is a contest between Chapters to design the Rally Patch for our 2020 District Rally. More info on the parameters are to come, if you are good at graphic designing, see what you can come up with. Jeff & Cindy

DISTRICT AMBASSADORS
Boots?
When was the last time you thought about the footwear you have on when you ride?
We hear a lot about ATGATT, dress for the slide not the ride. We are also admonished
to wear good leather over the ankle boots while riding. Why? How come soft comfy
running shoes don’t work so well while riding? Why is it not safe to have the wrong
shoes on while riding?
Support? What would not be good is to come to a stop, put your foot down and roll
your ankle. If the surface is uneven, your footing could be compromised. You need
sturdy over the ankle boots to give your ankles the support to hold the weight of the
bike. Having a leather boot adds durability and the needed support.
Protection? Our feet are out in the open and subject to all the elements. Water is
the most obvious element we will encounter while riding. Are your boots going to
keep your feet dry? Maybe you don’t ride in the rain and you don’t feel it is a big
deal? Plan for the worst conditions, you never know when you will hit a nasty rain
squall, wet feet are no fun. Rocks and other flying debris are another issue that we
need protection from.
Cold and Heat? There are times when we can experience both. I like having boots that are high and completely
cover my ankles. For the things mentioned above and for protection from the cold. I hate cold ankles while
riding. Heat can come from the ambient air riding in a hot climate, it can also come from the engine. You need
boots that will protect your feet and ankles from the engine heat. On cold days this heat can be a welcome side

affect, on hot days you could wish for some cool air flow to cut down on the burning feel. One more reason for
boots that protect.
I recently had to get new boots for work. I needed steel toe boots for a new requirement in my shop. I love my
high top leather Danner boots I use for riding. I wanted to find a similar boot with steel toes that I could use for
both riding and work. Danner does have them with the steel toes I needed. They are designed for EMT workers
and have a slip resistant sole. Why is having a slip resistant sole important for riding a bike? The old steel toe
boots I had been wearing had terrible slippery soles and I kept slipping while backing the bike. I hated it. Now
I am sure footed and don’t slip.
The next important requirement is ease of getting the boots on and taking them off. I prefer the side zipper
found on my Danner boots. Leave the laces tied up and unzip. On and off is a breeze. Never have to mess with
the laces. Give it some thought if you are having trouble with your riding boots. Think of the features I
mentioned and find the right combination of Support, Protection, Comfort, and ease of getting them on and off.
See you on the next Chapter ride with your new boots on.

help reduce fraudulent use of credit cards for “card not present” transactions (such as
Internet Purchases). It is against Washington State law to write down the CVV
Number on paper. You must call Mike White at 360.340.2588 and give him the CVV
number.
VISA calls it a Card Verification Value (CVV)
MASTERCARD calls it a Card Verification Code)
AMERICAN EXPRESS calls it a Card Identification Number (CID)
