You Don't Have to Walk Alone

GRIEF CLASSES

New Classes Beginning this March Grief is an experience of life that is hard to explain and hard to navigate. It comes upon us for a variety of reasons, in expected and unexpected ways, for an undetermined amount of time. Here at Good Shepherd we walk alongside the grieving in a variety of ways, including our quarterly grief classes. These classes offer a space for folks who have lost someone close to them, to share their stories with one another, reflect on where they are in their grief, and learn how others have navigated this journey. Whether you have been grieving a loss for a while or are feeling it for the first time, you are welcome in this space. While you cannot “learn” grief away, it can be helpful to be held in a gentle space as you find words for your experience and hear how grief has been approached by other. Classes are taught by Ann and Al Wearing, both of whom have navigated grief in their lives and been helped by this class and space. Our next series of classes will begin Wednesday March 4th. Classes are held Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in Room 4 at the Madison Campus for 5 weeks. If you would like to attend, or would like more information please contact Sarah Iverson at [email protected]. Good Shepherd also walks alongside and cares for those grieving all sorts of life experiences through our Stephen Ministry. If you would like to meet with a Stephen Minister please contact Pastor Sheryl at [email protected].

4 February 2020

Being a Lutheran Church places Good Shepherd in a family of congregations that for over 500 years has described themselves as “confessional” churches. But what does being a confessional church actually mean? And, more importantly, what does being a confessional church mean in this day and age? First, a confessional church is a church that confesses its faith. We trace our roots back to the Apostle Paul standing before the Roman government in the Book of Acts. We see that Paul, on trial for his faith, sought to model his response on that of Jesus Christ, who confessed to the high priest Caiaphas about who He was and what He was sent to do. When the early Christians refused to take the Roman Empire’s pledge of allegiance, which included the worship of the emperor, they confessed their faith in Christ following the example of Paul. Often these Christians were put to death for their faith and became known as “martyrs,” which literally translates as “witnesses” to the faith. Fast forward to 1530 to the south of Germany at the Diet of Augsburg (an official meeting of the imperial legislature) where seven princes and leaders of two imperial cities stood before the emperor to confess their faith in Christ and Him alone. This was considered the birth of the Protestant Reformation. The purpose of confession is to bear witness to the truth of God. This can be done both positively and negatively. Confession can either be about something that illuminates God’s goodness and mercy in Jesus Christ, or against human perversions of the faith for personal or political gain. So, communities formed around a common

confession (as ours is) can be harmonious OR cantankerous and divisive if situations arise where common understandings begin to fall away. And sometimes they are both things at the same time! What does this mean for our life together at Good Shepherd? First, it reminds us that we are gathered around a common, communal understanding of Jesus Christ as the Crucified and Risen Savior of all humanity. Second, we will find that in divisive times our unity in Christ must be celebrated and strengthened across all the other issues that are secondary to the faith. Finally, we must remember that despite all of the efforts by outside forces to divide God’s Church and squelch its power, we hold this treasure, the faith, as a gift for future generations. Our stewardship of this gift is our calling. Whenever our children and grandchildren watch and listen to how we talk and treat each other, they will take those actions and words as examples of our faith! Just look at how we examine the history of the faith over centuries of joys and tribulations and think how future generations will look at us… this is a very humbling realization. At Good Shepherd, we continue to build upon our strengths of hospitality, grace and service. But let us always pause and give thanks for the faith that leads us to confess that all of these things are possible only because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ! Alleluia, Alleluia! Amen.

How did the partnership of Good Shepherd & FMSC Begin? The FMSC MobilePack at Good Shepherd started with Sheryl Henry and her family. They participated in a packing session at a Feed My Starving Children permanent site in the Minneapolis area during a middle school mission trip. After organizing a FMSC MobilePack in a warehouse in Middleton, Sheryl approached then Lead Pastor Brent Campbell about the possibility of Good Shepherd hosting a MobilePack. It was agreed that Good Shepherd would host this event. The 2020 event will mark the 8th time we have hosted. In the history of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church MobilePack, a total of 940,896 meals have been packed and funded.

What are the biggest needs to make this event a success?

Volunteers are the heart and soul of FMSC. The hands-on packing experience often ignites a fire within them that spreads out into their friend groups, families, work places, and communities. Every financial donation allows FMSC to continue meeting the needs of those who need the food the most. Every 24 cents donated to pay for a meal and every 2-hour time commitment a volunteer makes to FMSC is an investment in a person the volunteer will likely not meet. Bottom line: people invest in people.

How does the food go from Good Shepherd to those in need?Once meals are packed at Good Shepherd they head back to a FMSC warehouse to await their scheduled shipment. A full container holds 272,160 meals, so Good Shepherds meals are allocated to finish filling one container and to begin filling the next one. From the FMSC warehouse the container travels to a shipping port to travel by barge to the port of entry at the destination country. Most of the meals packed at the Verona campus have made their way to Haiti through various FMSC partners. Once they are cleared through Customs, the recipient partner organization will arrange transport to their warehouse or compound facility to store and distribute those meals. Many partners cook meals at schools or in community feeding areas, serving the students and staff at the school, or the particular community. Anyone who is interested in seeing FMSC food being distributed is welcome to join one of our Food in Action Trips listed on the FMSC website at: fmsc.org/get-involved/food-in-action-trips

"Volunteering for FMSC Mobilepack has been such a great event for our AMPED group!

The Mobilepack is a very fun and hands on way for everyone to help people in need. It's a way to give back on a very global scale."

- Brian Bellin, AMPED Leader

"At the end of each session we prayed over the mobile packs which really brought home the realization of what we had done and the great importance of the meals. We hope and

pray that this year’s event will meet or exceed the goals set and we

can provide these much-needed meals for children throughout the world."

Congregational Life

The 20's/30's group is becoming KairosA D U LT FA I T H F O R M A T I O N

How do you know when it is the right time?

Kairos is a Greek word that means “the right time.” In our lives, we ask ourselves often about the right time for things, especially when we are young adults. Many churches want to have a ministry for young adults and we actually have one! During a person’s 20's and 30's, they go through so many transitions in their personal, professional and faith life. Transitions really define this time period and it is a joy to have a group of people to walk through this time together. The 20's/30's ministry in the past 8 years has done a variety of Bible and book

studies, served together by doing highway clean-ups and had prison book drives. We've had fun together with countless BBQs, roller derby nights and camping trips. We have also walked with members through job transitions, moves, welcoming babies and new relationships. Having faith support during these times is life-giving and an important role of our church family. Over the years, Good Shepherd members no longer in their 20's or 30s haven’t known if they were still welcome to attend our 20's/30's events. And to that we say, maybe today is your Kairos! Is this the right time for you to get more involved in church, meet new people, and

grow together in your faith through whatever life transitions you are going through? You are welcome to join us as we walk through life transitions in faith together. Join the newly named Kairos group. Whether you are a young adult or an adult young at heart, you are welcome. Come explore scripture and ask questions about the Bible in our new Book Study on "What is the Bible?" by Rob Bell. We will meet on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at The Draft House in Verona beginning March 1, 2020 hosted by GS Kairos Group. Contact Pastor Dara, [email protected] or Becca, [email protected]

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner Everyone is welcome to join us February 25th for a Shrove Tuesday feast held in the Peterson Hall at the Madison Campus. We’ll be flipping pancakes from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. so stop in anytime! We’ll also have activities for the kids. Come enjoy a meal with others as we prepare for the season of Lent. If you would like to volunteer for this event by setting up, cooking, or cleaning up please contact Sarah Iverson at [email protected].

To help address these questions, Good Shepherd Church welcomes Percy Brown, Jr. to speak on February 4 at 6:30 p.m. Percy is the Director of Equity and Student Achievement for the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District. He also serves as Senior Outreach Specialist for the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at UW-Madison and adjunct instructor for Edgewood College in the school of education. We focus this RIC Sunday asking the question, "How do we advocate for our marginalized siblings and those who are the most vulnerable in the room?" It is a service to set our hearts and eyes to God, asking for grace and forgiveness, leading us to be the advocates in this world, and stand with the oppressed. Join us as we celebrate and proclaim God’s boundless love for all of God’s Beloveds!

Financial Updates

Giving Thanks for your Foundation Support

Thank You for helping us move Beyond…!F I N A N C E

G O O D S H E P H E R D F O U N D A T I O N

While the key focus of our recent Beyond Campaign was to gain support to retire Good Shepherd’s debt, we also asked members to consider including Good Shepherd’s Foundation in their estate planning.

We’re excited to report that 20 families noted that they have either included the Foundation in their estate planning or would like more information about the Foundation and the work being done. Thank you! What a wonderful testament to the importance of continuing to serve Christ and His church even when your time on earth is done.

You, our devoted members of Good Shepherd, have helped us complete our most successful fundraising effort in history. Almost every day, new checks and gifts of appreciated assets continue to arrive. Only a few weeks into 2020, well over $100,000 of additional contributions have been gratefully received in the new tax year.So what is happening to all of this cash? We celebrated your generosity on January 22nd by sending 85% of what we raised (after paying off campaign expenses) to pay down our mortgage principal. Our wire transfer of $458,880 reduced our balance outstanding to $2,658,429. We have a long way to go before we can finally burn our mortgage note, but we are well on our way to achieving this momentous goal.Of equal importance, Beyond… is helping us prepare for future financial obligations. The remaining 15% of what has been raised so far is being held safely in a money market account earmarked for projects like replacing the air handler in Madison as it reaches the end of its serviceable life. As additional dollars arrive, our priorities will shift from “needs” to “wants,” and we can

THE HOLY C.o.W.

Getting Ministry "Mooving" in 2020

In 2019 the Moo Crew completed the extensive work required to get our food cart operational and our kitchen commercially certified, enabling it to become a base of operations. We ventured out into the community to get our feet wet and figure out logistics. In the end we accomplished nine separate events including:

• Meals on Raymond Road outside our Madison campus where we shared tables with our neighborhood and church.

• A fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House.• Supporting the “Man Up,” event for formerly

incarcerated men held at Fountain of Life Baptist Church.

• The LIFE 102.5 Fall Festival where we fed nearly 500 people.

• We also trained 12 new Moo Crew members who faithfully served in a variety of ways.

In 2020 we will roll into a more established and consistent pattern of ministry as our schedule solidifies. Opportunities are in place or exist to support the following regular events in Madison and

Verona:• Movies in the park (Madison)• Concerts in the park (Verona)• Regularly scheduled meals and worship at Healing

House, the Beacon, Occupy Madison, Man Up events and more.

• Participation in a summer movie series at our Verona campus and at the Hometown days parade.

We will be experimenting with menu and worship offerings and using a variety of communities and settings to try and learn about what ways the Spirit can use this ministry to bring people into contact with the grace and mercy and love of Christ. We are a small but motivated crew and we are looking for some people out there who are passionate about taking the Church into the streets. We need schedulers, cooks, servers, musicians, you name it. Please trust me when I say there is a place for you here. We will be holding a training for new Moo Crew members at the Madison campus during our Synod’s LEAD event on March 14th. Stay tuned for more info and please reach out to Pastor Joe, [email protected] or Rick Thomas, [email protected] with questions.
