Wichita A’s Meeting Minutes January 27, 2020 Minisa Park

The meeting was called to order by President Alan Orr and the club recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Ryan Bendell, Jim Workman and Dwayne Lutz were introduced as guests. Michael Halfman moved to approve the minutes of the November meeting as printed in the newsletter. Motion seconded and approved. Alan Orr told of thank you notes from The TREE HOUSE in appreciation of the donations collected at the ladies Christmas luncheon and THE AUGUSTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY in memory of Gary Agard a long time club mem-ber who passed away recently. Alan Orr also reported that MAFCA is no longer extending the “Free first year mem-bership” for new members. John Stone talked a little about Mid-West Regional that will be held in Overland Park, KS May 31st—June 5th. It will be hosted by the Plain Ol’ A’s. Registration is $80.00 Alan Orr gave the treasurers report in Claudia Ellerman’s absence. Sunshine lady Bonita Graham reported that June Hall and Grace Brooks are both doing well. Longtime members Verla Howland, Gary Agard and member Dean Fellers wife, Jeanine, have all passed away since our last meeting. Gil Adams challenged the club to collect 500 pounds of food for our next non-perishable food drive later this year. Thanks again Gil for delivering our collection to the “Bread of Life”. Vicki Hildibrand reported that 63 women attend-ed the ladies Christmas luncheon. She thanked the members for the generous donations to the “Tree House”. Mike James reported that a good time was had by all at the Christmas Party. Musical entertainment was provided by the West High Choir. Don Grabendike stated that 43 people turned out for the New Year Day tour. The temperature co-operated this year, making it the warmest “New Years tour so far’. Don also stated that he has a “Save Century II” peti-tion if anyone is interested in signing it. Alan Orr introduced Sara Harmon who presented a very interesting program on Ackerman Island and Wonderland Park. Due to technical issues with our equipment, we were not able to view the film, but Sara did a wonderful job ex-plaining the development of the island and amusement park. Refreshments were provided by Nancy Brown, Orpha Eyres, Kathy James, Donna Hileman and Rita Hoffmans. Our next meeting will be February 24th at Minisa Park at 7 PM. It will be our tour planning meeting for 2020. (Tour planning meeting was moved from January meeting to February Meeting to allow for the special program about Acker-man Island and Wonderland Park.) Meeting adjourned Judi Sharp, Secretary

Time to get the A’s out and test drive when the weather cooperates (we did have a little teaser at the first of the month). Be ready to bring your Tour ideas to the February meeting! Any ideas for tours and events can be discussed. Last months program on Ackerman Island and Wonderland Park was a very interesting Program! Our apologies for the missing video which was to be a part of the program. Hopefully, all is corrected on the equipment and we will have smooth sailing on the next one! Sheila and I took our granddaughter to Exploration Place this weekend, and found some information on Ackerman Island and Wonderland Park there. Always learning something new about Wichita, even if we have lived here all our lives! President Alan Orr

February 2020 Rumbleseat Review Page 7

My name is Greg Fish, and I am a MAFFI Trustee. Your Board of Directors, myself, fel-low trustees, and a very important handful of other volunteers make up a group commit-ted to the display and care of a fantastic collection of Henry's Ford Model A's. Through discussions at the last Model A Day Foundation meeting, it was decided that the upkeep of your cars and trucks should consist of more than dusting and polishing. I am pleased to announce the VMP, or Vehicle Maintenance Program. This will be a lit-tle more involved than in years past, due to the decision that vehicles owned by the Foundation should be run annually. Despite a beautiful climate controlled building, some types of deterioration will not yield. Valves get stuck, clutch surfaces develop sur-face rust, and Heaven forbid, engines may become stuck fast over years of non-use. These are preservation issues that we are striving to avoid. Beginning in the spring, your trustees will convene on the museum with teams chosen by them with the goal of starting and running some of our long dormant stock. Over the course of the summer, and after a few visits, we hope to have every MAFFI owned vehicle running, and contin-ue this goal on an annual basis. It is an important process to insure the cars and trucks we love last for generations to come. Thank You, Marsha Quesnel, MAFFI Trustee [email protected]

MARC MILEAGE PROGRAM

The Model A Restorers Club has a Mileage Program available to MARC members only. The award recognition begins at 2,000 miles and the second award level is 5,000 miles. The participant receives a round blue plaque at the first mileage and a replacement mileage tab is awarded thereafter. Dick Fisher, the chairman for the MARC Mileage Program writes an article in the Model A News magazine. If you are interested in participating you can read more about it and register at model-a-ford.org>marc-driving-awards. Members that have registered in the past and have not turned in mileage can still do so since they keep the records and it is not necessary to turn in mileage every year. If you ae a MARC member and do not have a computer I can print the Program Guidelines and registration form for you. I will be turning in the 2019 odometer readings by February 2020. 1. If your Model A has a lot of free play in the Steering Wheel, jack up the front Axle so the wheels clear the ground. 2. Check the Pittman Arm, and the Tie Rod ends for play. If ok, start by adjusting the up and down Bearing play in the

Steering Wheel Shaft. Pull up and down on the wheel while adjusting the Screw that is at an angle on top of the Box for minimum free play.

3. Now adjust the side play in the Sector Shaft that connects to the Pittman Arm. Pull in and out on the Arm while adjusting the Screw located on the center right side of the Box for minimum play.

4. To adjust for minimum backlash in the Steering Wheel, rotate the Wheel to the left stop, right stop, and then set the Wheel in the center of the range. Loosen the four 5/8 inch nuts on the left side of the Box about one turn. Now ro-tate the Eccentric located under the top nut, towards the Firewall to take out the free play. Once the free play in the center of the range is minimum, tighten the nuts, and check for binding. If so, back off the Nuts and turn the Eccen-tric forward about a quarter of turn and then, turn back towards the firewall a little less, retighten the Nuts again and recheck for binding at the limits. You will have a little more free play in the wheel but this is required to stop the binding.

NOTE: If the Box binds at one limit and not the other, the Centralization Eccentric located on the bottom right side of the Box must be adjusted a little left or right with a screw driver. The main Eccentric on top must be readjusted again. 5. Check on the Oil level in the box, fill with 600W oil or STP, DO NOT use grease even if it has a Grease Zert on it. I know this sounds a little complicated but it is well worth the effort. There is nothing like driving a Model A in a heavy cross wind with a lot of play in the Wheel. You are all over the road.
