MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Desk of Mr. Patrick FlanaganLakota Middle School Principal

With the first half of the school year in the books, we begin the final few important months of the 2017-18 school year. Our Middle School staff and students finished 2017 off strong with our character word of caring being at the center of all we did. Starting after Thanksgiving, our 7th and 8th grade staff and students participated in a drive for God’s Store House and Stockings for Soldiers. The 5th and 6th Grade focused their at-tention on the Independence House in Fostoria bringing care items to the residents right before Winter Break. Altogether, our Middle School family collected over $2000 for the Pennies for Patients drive benefitting the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. The 6th grade class won the battle of the classes and raised over $900 with Mrs. Linkey’s homeroom winning the overall individual classroom award. Four classes, Mrs. Bentley, Mr. Balsizer, Ms. McCullough, and Mrs. Brower raised over $100 individually.

The second part of the school year will focus on testing in the spring, scheduling for next year, and preparing our 8th grade students for the transition into high school. Please visit the school’s website and follow us on twitter @lakota_middle to view important announcements. Go Middle School Raiders!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLI can’t believe we are over half way

through the year! The time is really starting to fly! We have met all of our Letter Land friends and are starting to use them to read and write words. We are also working on numbers, number sets and shapes and will be starting measuring soon. We are going to be starting our science unit and completing some fun science experiments that go along with it. Coming up in February we will be celebrating the 100th Day of school along with the Kindergarteners.

KINDERGARTEN NEWSIt is hard to believe we are half way through the year! The Kindergarteners are working

really hard on writing sentences, reciting sight words, and counting to 100. We are also start-ing to read leveled reading books, using the decoding skills we are learning in class. We are getting very excited about celebrating our 100th day of school in February! Also in February we will be celebrating President’s Day.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLFIRST GRADE NEWS

The first graders have been busy since returning from winter break. We’ve been working hard in math by learning math facts and comparing numbers. Soon we’ll begin learning about 2D and 3D shapes. In language arts, we continue becoming better readers and writers by learning about long vowels, writing complete sentences and questions. In art, we’re having fun using play-doh to learn about primary and secondary colors. Soon we’ll be getting ready for Valentines Day. As the 100th day of school approaches, the First Grade will be doing something new. This year we will be celebrating the 101st day of school with fun activities centered around the number 101.

SECOND GRADE NEWSSecond grade recently finished reading the story Officer Buckle and Gloria.  We were able to

bring the story to life with a visit from Deputy Stotz, as well as Deputy Darsey and his canine partner, Eda.  We had a great time learning about police dogs, their training, and how police officers can use dogs to help them.

We are also in the middle of our timed math facts practice. Students are working their way towards math fact fluency and a celebration with ice cream sundaes! Students earn one item for their ice cream sundae with each timed test they pass. Students should be able to correctly answer 48/50 math problems in 3 minutes of less.

Our 102nd day of school is quickly approaching!  We are looking forward to celebrating our 102nd day with many counting activities!

THIRD GRADE NEWSBefore winter break, third grade students

participated in a variety of seasonal activi-ties.  One activity was a STEM based project to create an igloo out of marshmallows and toothpicks.  Students were able to find creative ways to complete the task.

Third grade has been working on learning their multiplication facts.  They are starting to work toward earning a reward party for knowing these facts.  Now they are working on applying these strategies that they have learned to understanding division.

In Social Studies, we are learning about the government.  We are making exciting connec-tions between what is happening currently in our nation and what we are learning.  Some of the areas we are focusing on include:  three branches of government, different levels of government, and what each branch’s job is.

Also, we are continuing to work on strategies to help students with spring testing and passing the third grade reading guarantee.  We look forward to seeing all the progress the students have made this year.

Thirds graders created igloos out of marshmallows and toothpicks.

FOURTH GRADE NEWSThe fourth grade classes held a behavior incentive party on Friday, January 19th.  Stu-

dents who had exemplary behavior and no visits to study hall made ice cream sundaes and watched a movie.

Our tailgating-themed Accelerated Reader party was also held on Friday, January 19th.  There were several stations set-up for kids to participate in fun activities during the party.  It’s time for our students to focus on their reading goals for this quarter.  Our third nine weeks’ Accelerated Reader party is a movie party, which will be held on March 28th.

The students are studying economics in Social Studies class. As a project, students de-signed their own business.  They wrote a paragraph describing the business, and decorated a bag to look like the outside of their “business.” Several Ohio standards were covered with the completion of this project.

For math, students need to continue to practice their multiplication and division facts. It is important to have fluency with these facts, in order to solve more challenging math problems.

Students will be taking their third practice Study Island benchmark test in February.  This test is designed to help our students prepare for the AIR Test in April.

Fourth grade students enjoyed

ice cream sundaes as a reward for good behavior.

Officer Stotz read to Mrs. Hammer’s class and students enjoyed hearing him read about Police Officer Tools. Thank you Officer Stotz!!

SEARCH FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESSchool districts across the state of Ohio are participating in an effort to identify, locate,

and evaluate children from birth through 21 years of age who may have disabilities. Schools search for children having such conditions as hearing impairment, visual impairments, speech or language impairments, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism, mul-tiple disabilities, mental retardation, other health impairments, and traumatic brain injury. Public schools are required and are committed to the provision of a free and appropriate public education, regardless of the child’s disability. Many children with disabilities are not found to receive and address their needs until they reach school age. These children may not be visible as a part of the mainstream community, such as children of homeless families or migrant families. Also, unidentified children with disabilities are often preschoolers. Parents may not be aware their child has a disability or that there are programs and services available.

Lakota Local Schools is interested in meeting the needs of children with disabilities. If you have or know of a child who may have a disability, please contact Pam Bibler, who is the Special Education Supervisor at Lakota at 419-986-6650 or [email protected].

ZOE JOHNSON PERFORMS IN NUTCRACKER

Zoe Johnson had her first experience in the Nutcracker ballet this past December.

She played the role of a mouse. Zoe said her favorite part of the Nutcracker was to be able to dance in front of a large audience. She has been taking ballet lessons since she was three years old and currently studies at Dance Unlimited in Tiffin. Zoe hopes to play the role of a “snowflake” in the Nutcracker when she is older.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

~~~ News from Title I ~~~ Second Nine Weeks AR Party
Three lucky winners of an AMAZON KINDLE FIRE!
These students were the top point earners
of their grade.
Students enjoying the stations as a reading reward!!
The second nine weeks have come and gone!! Whew, time sure goes fast!! The students in our second through fourth grades did an amazing job with reading throughout this past nine weeks. We are proud of their efforts and desire to read so very much! As a reward to those that met the set goals, we had a small tailgate party in the gym for them on Friday, January 19th. For this party, we had a few gracious parent volunteers help run the 5 different stations we set up. The students seemed to enjoy their time! We would like to thank all those parents that volunteered, we love having you!!
Please encourage your children/grand-children, nieces/nephews, brothers/sisters, to keep reading!!
LAKOTA ELEMENTARY MUSIC NEWSWe would like to congratulate the fourth and third grade students on their fall and winter
programs. Many parents and community members expressed their appreciation for all of the students’ hard work. We are already in February and have been very busy learning more musical skills.
Kindergarten is still working on identifying singing/speaking voices, steady beat, and other areas (high/low, loud/soft, fast/slow). We are developing our skills to demonstrate the differ-ence between all of these skills.
First grade is learning to read rhythms using “tah” for quarter note and “tah-di” for eighth notes. It has been fun creating patterns which we call rhythm. We are also learning that the pitches we sing create a melody.
Second grade is working also on rhythm identifying and demonstrating notes that last longer than 1 beat. We first learned about two quarter notes tied together and how that could also be a half note. We are also strengthening our skills by creating and writing rhythms with our new notes.
Third grade is studying the instruments and their families. At the end of this unit we will attend a live performance by the Toledo Symphony. We are also learning how important it is to be able to read music and perform as a large ensemble.
Fourth grade is studying syncopation and how it works in rhythm. We are also working on identifying notes on the staff and how it relates to reading music.
First grade will have their spring program on Thursday, March 15th at 7:00 p.m. and Second grade will present their program on Thursday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Watch for more information about these programs coming home.
The Lakota Local School District, as a unified learning community, is dedicated to graduating students who are life-long learners and produc-tive citizens in an ever-changing society.
SCHOOL COUNSELOR GRADE RESPONSIBILITIES
We have seen a significant increase in student at risk behaviors and mental health issues this school year.  We have received a grant from the Sandusky County Board of Mental Health to pay for prevention and awareness programming.  The focus of the programming will be at the elementary and middle school.  We plan to begin the programming this month.  The ad-ditional resources at these levels will permit us to adjust the grade level responsibilities of our school counselors.  Mrs. Slotterbeck will work with students grades 9-12 and Mrs. Shirkey will work with students grades K-8.
We will continue to look at additional resources to help meet the needs of our students.
We have a limited number of spots open for children to attend our preschool program. If you are interested in hav-ing your son and/or daughter attend our preschool, please contact the school at 419-986-6650, extension 4377, and speak with or leave a message for Mrs. Moros-chan. Priority admission will be given to Lakota residents, and students who are eligible for kindergarten the following year (2019-2020). Proof of residency may be requested. We will only take names until April 25th. Notifications will be mailed on May 4th and information packets will need to be turned in by May 22nd.
