PARTNERING Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.--Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NRSV) I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.--Philippians 1:3-6 In the past few months I have sensed a growing awareness of the importance of partnership to followers of Jesus. Partnership provides a lifeline of joy, help, and support that is indispensable for the long journey. (African Proverb: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.) There are many kinds of partnerships. Some, like marriage, are partnerships that we commit to for life, with vows before God; others are ephemeral, sometimes unarticulated, often only briefly shared, provisional commitments. Since we believe that God is eternal--an eternally mysterious partnership of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--we believe that Gods invitation to eternal life is an invitation into a holy partnership for all of life. We are invited to enter earthly partnerships now for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven that is coming, and when we accept these invitations, we are stepping onto holy ground, consciously deciding to practice the presence of God. course of three decades with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti to improve access to healthcare, education, economic opportunity, sanitation, and clean water in 10 communities on the island of La Gonâve. This is a partnership rooted in discipleship, following the command and example of Jesus: healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and reconciling people to one another and to God. With a shared dependence on God, Haitian and American partners work together to create a world that is free of suffering, despair, and isolation (an exhibition of the Kingdom of God) and to offer opportunities to flourish on Gonâve. One of those communities, the village of Bois Brule, has lost its American partner of many years. This loss endangers the relationship of trust and mutuality that has built up through intentional partnership and it casts uncertainty over the community’s ability to educate 157 preschool and primary school children. Margaret Adames and Mary Beth Morgan (both teachers--isn’t that a God thing?) and I were privileged to sit for an evening in a circle with leaders of this community as they shared their concerns and hopes. We were touched by their desire for a reassurance that we would return to Bois Brule someday and that they would not be forgotten. Though the physical struggles of a village without running water or electricity, or free public education, are very real, we were amazed that the “need” they expressed to us that night was for a means to enhance their worship of God through music! This came after we had already been serenaded by the beautiful voices of their children, who were raising a song about the joy in their hearts that was blooming like the flowers all around us. Where they saw need (their only musical instruments being their voices and hands for clapping), we saw only an abundance of gifts! We were offered love, friendship, hospitality, and partnership with people who know how to do a great deal with very little, with the grace of God to make much out of nothing.

First Presbyterian and Trinity Episcopal churches have been invited to enter into this partnership with the village of Bois Brule (which has St. Jacques church and school at its center, their equivalent of our “Downtown Commons”) and to learn together from the experience of the 16 other partner churches about a new, often challenging and messy, model of development. The mode of this partnership is to work together with, not to do for. The partnership seeks

wherever possible to support the economy of the island by employing Gonâvians. Rather than give away free healthcare, provided sporadically by visiting U.S. doctors and nurses, the partnership seeks ways to support the ongoing employment of Haitian doctors and nurses. The same is true in education, farming/agriculture, construction and small business. Locally-sourced goods and materials are used whenever possible. We have a lot to learn about this way of operating and this partnership has much to teach.

This partnership affords us the opportunity to be transformed by Christ in our thinking and in our living and to change how we engage in missions in our own community and the world. Perhaps most importantly, this partnership offers the opportunity for two very similar churches in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville to become even closer partners. Together we helped to forge Loaves and Fishes. Together we created SpiritFest. Together we will have many more opportunities to minister to and bless our community in the Downtown Commons. Together we have been blessed by God with the resources of a church twice our size; and together with our La Gonave partners in the U.S. we have the resources of a church ten to twenty times the size of our two congregations combined; and with the creativeness and resourcefulness of our partners in Haiti there is simply no end to the exponential good that our Creator God can do! Margaret and Mary Beth and I look forward to sharing much more about our trip in the weeks to come. If you want to experience the blessing of this partnership in Bois Brule yourself, first hand, mark your calendar for January 6-12, 2019 and let us know that you want to go! Grace and Peace, Pastor Greg

THANK YOU! The Glover family cannot thank you enough for your many gifts, wonderful cards, and kindnesses to us over the Christmas season. We are overwhelmed by your generosity as individuals and a congregation. Pastor Greg is especially grateful for the 2-volume critical edition of The Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic by A. R. George (Oxford) with which he was surprised and delighted at the staff Christmas party by the Profes-sional Staff Committee. THANK YOU! Once again we indulged in many delicious goodies that showed up without warning on my desk and had to turn down too many gracious invitations to Christmas celebrations. All of you have made our Christmas especially joyful this year.

Blessings and heartfelt thanks,

Pastor Greg, Beth, Grace, and Christina Glover

Lent Series: The Seven Deadly Virtues

During Lent we are accustomed to examining our hearts to reduce or eliminate every last trace of the “seven deadly sins.” We give up things for Lent to better avoid greed, lust, sloth, and the like. This year we will explore the fine line between our virtues and our vices. Could our faith, love, family, power, success, goodness, and generosity become skewed by flawed priorities and val-ues, and thus become vices that are just masquerading as healthy Christian practices and goals? This is the sort of Lenten examination of our hearts that helps us live beyond platitudes and dis-tinguish the shine of brass from the luster of gold.

Ash Wednesday, February 14, 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Begin the journey of Lenten forgiveness by coming forward for the imposition of ashes, in the sign of the cross.

Wednesday Evenings in Lent, February 21-March 21

Trinity Episcopal Church has invited us to join them for Wednesday evenings in Lent to learn more about Haiti. Their Wednesday evening program begins with a gathering time at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m.($5 per person / $10 maximum per family). Dinners during Lent will be simple, with soups, breads, and salads most evenings. Childcare is provided. After dinner, adults may choose to participate either in a book discussion or in a forum, with sharing about the mission trip and presentation by a Haitian member of Trinity Episcopal Church who was rescued from the music school at the Episcopal Cathedral in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake in 2010. (Book title TBD; selected from the bibliography provided on page five.) There will be nursery care provided for small children and babies and programs available for youth (6th-12th grade) and ele-mentary age children. Also, there will be a brief Compline (bedtime prayers) service at 7:45pm. You’re out the door by 8!
