There were certainly more people at this concert than I have seen in quite some time at an organ concert at Grace. I recall, a good 30 years ago, when organ concerts at Grace Cathedral were packed in the choir area, and almost packed in the nave. Ed Stout, the curator of organs, was always there to welcome us and explain the inner workings of the organ, with lots of humor. What great memories. After the 4pm bell toll, Ben Bachman warmly welcomed us and introduced Christopher Houlihan. Christopher came down the aisle with the aid of a crutch. He had suffered an injury at the airport the past Thursday, and as he said, he did not want to miss the opportunity to play the Aeolian-Skinner. Beginning with the Vierne Carillon de Westminster and ending the program with excerpts from the Vierne Symphonie II, we heard a lot of beautiful symphonic registrations. He took liberties with registrations and fermatas because of the room, and those liberties were all well-chosen. He used his ears while playing and listened to what was going on in the room. Bravo! Afterwards, at the reception, it was great to speak with Christopher, who was soon off to Georgia to play another concert. I do hope his foot heals, though. I spoke with many other organists whom I did not know. It was a delight to see many people enjoying the reception. I thank Jane Rosenblum and Andy Chislett for hosting the reception. Thank you also to George Emblom and his committee for their hard work on this year’s concert series. As George said in an email to Ben, “Thanks to you and the Cathedral for co-sponsoring the Houlihan recital. The relationship between SF/AGO and the Cathedral has been so wonderful for so many years. May it continue for many years and decades to come!” I concur.

Competition updatefrom William Vaughan

I am very proud to announce that we will have two young organ students who will be in our local competition in April.

They are Dominic Pang (student of Angela Kraft Cross), and Eric Zhang (student of Chris Tietze). I wish both of them the very best in their preparation!

The competition will be held at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco on Sunday, April 9 at 2:00 pm. Come and support our competitors. (I remember when I played in the 1983 competition which was held on the Holtkamp at UC Berkeley. Unfortunately I was the only contestant, but I still had to play in order to move on to the Regional Convention.)  s

SFAGO Newsletter • February 2017 3

Please join us on Monday, February 20th, at St Stephen’s Church in Belvedere for more exciting Guild fun.

Would you believe it has already been 8 months since I became Dean? Time has just flown by. I say that because as a chapter, we need to be thinking about elections for your board for the 2017–2018 term. Wouldn’t YOU be interested?

There are a few board positions that are opening this year. They are Sub Dean Elect; Treasurer; two members for the Special Projects Committee; and four members for the Program Committee. Wouldn’t you like to be involved with your local chapter? I would be very happy to continue as your Dean, but if one of you would like to run, by all means put your name in. I would run for another position.

Personally, I shied away from any involvement with leadership in the Guild for many years. I guess the reason was because I was so myopic, and just stayed to myself and my own work. Now, being a part of the inner workings of our chapter, I feel more connected with members and the music scene. I am very glad to have said yes to Simon Berry last year. Yes, there is a bit of work involved.

Please email me if you have any desire to run for a position, or know of anyone who would be a good candidate, ([email protected]). We meet one Monday night a month, and then we come and support our monthly Guild event. If you would like to see change, excitement, and growth in our chapter, come, be a part of the process.

One current change we are working on is our website. I am working with our new webmaster, Frank Torrano, and I am really excited about the direction we are headed. I will not give it all away now, but … it will be exciting!  s

First Schoenstein to Hartfordby Jack M Bethards

Schoenstein & Co. is building a new three-manual, 16 voice, 18 rank organ for Grace Episcopal Church of Hartford,

Connecticut. It is in the symphonic style with Great and Swell enclosed and Swell high pressure stops doubly enclosed within the Swell. The third manual borrows solo and ensemble stops from the Great and Swell. This instrument can be previewed on a YouTube video of a similar organ in New York City (search “Schoenstein Tonal Demonstration”).

Grace Church is an Anglo-Catholic Parish with a fine liturgical tradition, which the organ is designed to support. The instrument will stand in a case at the west end of the church. Installation is scheduled for May, 2017. The choirmaster and organist is Kyle Swann, who is also Lecturer in Opera at the Yale School of Music. The Priest-in-charge is the Rev. Rowena J. Kemp.  s
