President’s Corner
By: Jack Klauschie RCBPREZ
Last month, I confessed I spent
time at the back of monthly
member rides for quite a
while. I want to share what I
learned at the back for
prospective members, new
members and old hands.
1) Be prepared. Please
assure your bike is in
good working order.
Arrive at the starting
place with a full tank of
gas and empty bladder.
While WC and gas stops
may be planned, you
should not expect the
group to abide by your
bladder capacity or fuel
level. Make a point to
download the GPS route
or print a copy of the
paper directions and
map for the ride.
2) Ride at your own pace.
I cannot
emphasize this enough.
Members have a wide
range of skills. Some like
to ride “fast” while
others want to smell the
wild flowers. I may do
both during a particular
ride. Truth is there only
will be a few minutes
between those at the
front and those at the
back when we stop for a
break. The rides ARE
NOT races. There is no
penalty for going slower
than those at the front.
The point is to enjoy the
ride, and get home
safely. All we ask is that
you tell someone if you
plan to make stops to
look at scenery, take
photos, etc. as that does
make a big time
difference, and we likely
will not wait or go
looking for you. If you
ask round, you may find
others who want that
experience.
3) Go “straight” if you lose
sight of the group.

Going “straight”
means to stay on the
road being ridden even
when encountering stop
signs, traffic lights, side
roads, etc. Group ride
leaders try to stop and
wait for all riders to
catch up when there is a
major turn or fork to
assure we do not lose
someone. Traffic
conditions, however, do
not allow this to be
done safely at all times.
If the group must
proceed, we ask
someone to wait for
others to catch up, leap
frogging until the last
rider comes along.
4) Don’t panic. GPS
routes and paper routes
are posted on the Club
web site for organized
rides. We do this so no
one gets lost. Take a
few minutes to study
the route before a ride
starts, preferably the
night before. Ask if you
have questions before
the ride starts. If you do
this, you will know the
route, where there are
major turns, where
there will be stops, and
our ultimate
destination.
5) We try not to leave
someone behind. If
we know you are part of
a ride AND you follow
the suggestions above,
someone may go
looking for you if you go
missing for a meaningful
period of time. We do
so in case someone has
a mechanical issue. You
must do your part by
staying on the route,
etc. Having others give
up their day to go
looking for you is a
privilege, not a right, so
please tell someone if
you decide to do your
own thing.

Appreciated

GPS Basics Class - February 25 @ 11 AM
Ken Carruthers, our de facto ride Captain, has volunteered to conduct a class on the basics of use of Map Source and
Basecamp, the two primary Garmin mapping programs. The goal of the class will be to impart sufficient knowledge so
you can make your own route or track, be able to download a route or track from your computer to your GPS, and share
GPS routes / tracks with your riding pals via e-mail.
The class is designed to be hands on so plan to bring your GPS with a full charge and your lap top (with a full charge) if
you have one.
Please check to be sure your GPS has the latest operating software. This can be done through Garmin Express. If you
bought the BMW Nav # you probably have unlimited map updates. You also can buy unlimited map updates from other
vendors such as Touratech. If you have unlimited map updates, please, please check to assure your map is up to date
because downloading a new map can take hours, depending on internet speeds. If you have an older map, don't worry
as it most likely will work with Map Source or Basecamp.
The class will be at my office. Matheny Sears Linkert & Jaime, 3638 American River Drive, Sacramento (just south of
Watt and Fair Oaks). The entrance is at the back of the office building next to the American River levy.
Please sign up on the forum so we can plan ahead.
Motor Safety Class - March 25 @ 2PM at A&S
Greg Peart, a longtime member of RCB and retired CHP Motor Officer, has given motorcycle rider safety talks at the 49er
Rally and Beemer Bash for many years. We asked him to do a talk for RCB. A & S graciously agreed to host the event.
Greg will give an approximate 1 ½ hour safety talk designed for the motorcycle rider to enhance street safety awareness.
The information is a conglomerate of the best things a long-time rider and retired California Highway Patrol Motor
Officer feels would help the street rider. After the 1st hour of seminar, Greg will answer the top most asked questions of
a CHP Motor Officer. There should be time after that for questions and answers from you the rider. Greg will discuss the
new California 2017 phone law and lane splitting law too.
Greg's Resume:
February 2017

Whale of a Tour
10th Annual Whale of a Tour B&B ride in March
By Greg Peart
March 10, 11 & 12,
Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 2017
Greg & Cyndee Peart have hosted the first
big RBC ride of the year now for 10 years.
Destination has always been the beautiful
Sea Gull Inn bed & breakfast in Mendocino.
This tour was conceived 10 years ago during
Manchester beach campout to be a couple’s
tour, rain or shine, non-campout & a first
tour RBC ride of each year. As always, we
plan to stay with Jim and Ayla Douglas at
the Sea Gull Inn of Mendocino. The rooms
are blocked off, so reservations must be
made by calling: The Sea Gull Inn at: 888-
937-5204. Let them know you are with the River City Beemers and you will receive 15% off the standard weekend rate,
there is a 2-night minimum stay for this
event. Your first night rate will be charged
as a deposit when the reservation is made
and the balance required at check-in. If we
exceed the Inns 9 room limit, Jim or Ayla
will assist you in obtaining lodging close by
in town. We have never needed more than 9
rooms so far. As in past events, this will be a
very easy going weekend. Activities depend
on the weather, size & wishes of the group.
The inn is a beautiful place to just chill.
Mendocino is a historic district, small
coastal town that is just wonderful to stroll
about, watch the migrating whales, shop,
and just relax. This tour is designed for
couples & is a hit with the ladies. Need I
mention the fabulous breakfast delivered to
your room each morning? As in past years
we will again enjoy a group cocktail party
each night prior to departing for dinner.
The Plan: Check out The Sea Gull INN at:
www.seagullbb.com , then call 888-937-
5204 to make your Own Reservation. Then,
Call Greg Peart 916-870-7841 & leave
contact # or email him at:
[email protected] that you are going
with us. Cutoff date for reservations will be:

30-45 minutes away. After dinner, the riders return
home on their own. Locations are chosen the
previous week by the participants. Participation
varies between three and 30 riders depending on the
time of year and the weather. And yes, we ride in
rain and during holiday periods although the groups
tend to be smaller and the destinations closer by.
But through it all, we haven't missed a Wednesday
in over two years!
Each week's destination is usually posted in
our forum on the previous Monday or Tuesday.
Board of Directors Meeting Location:
Cool River Pizza, 1805 Cirby Way STE 3
12/13/2016 - 7:00pm
The RCB board of directors meets monthly to
review past activities and plan future events.
Consideration is given to member interest and cost,
and the meeting is open to all.
While the meeting begins at 7:00PM, most of the
directors gather earlier to have dinner.
RCB member participation is strongly encouraged.
Monthly Club Meeting Location:
Susie's Country Oaks Cafe, 500 Cirby Way, Roseville, CA
95678
01/06/2017 – 8:00am
Organizer:
Club Membership
Join your fellow RCB members every month to
hear the latest club news, learn about upcoming
events, participate in a fun raffle, and, of course, to
socialize with your friends. Attendance is usually
between 40 and 60, or roughly 20% of our club.
February 2017
12 of 18
Note: Although there's no meeting on the other
Saturdays, quite a few members still make it to
Susie's for conversation and sometimes a pickup
ride.
Monthly Club Ride Location:
Susie's Country Oaks Cafe, 500 Cirby Way, Roseville, CA
95678
Leaves Susie’s at 9:00am on meeting days
What's better, after breakfast, than a spirited ride
through the beautiful NorCal roads we've been
blessed with? Except for special events, the rides
are generally 2-3 hours in length, cover 100-200
miles, and end with a lunch at some destination.
The rides are generally "spirited" but if we get
enough participation, we generally add a second,
more relaxed-pace group. Clutch out is 9:00AM or
when the monthly meeting ends, whichever is later,
and ride sheets are usually distributed prior to
departure. Please show up with a full tank of gas.
Here is a link from our northern club representative Tom Moe. Take a look and see what Montana has to offer. https://mtbmwriders.org/Newsletters.html
As always if anyone has something that would like published, travel report, pictures of events, how to articles, etc. Please send them and I will get them published.
