Winter Bash Promises To Be Season’s Highlight By Chris Welner

This has been one cold winter. The only saving grace is that it has made for some great ice-making for Glendale’s Outdoor Rink and has kept snow on the hills around Turtle Park for some outstanding tobogganing this winter.

The Christmas holidays saw our recreation facilities overflowing with families out soaking in the fresh air and getting active, day and night. Our beautiful tree lights have been on display all season, adding to the festive and homey atmosphere in Glendale.

Our community’s big social day this winter is February 4. The day starts with the kids Snow Day activities from 1-4 p.m., spearheaded by the Glendale Community Preschool parents. We want to see every child in the neighbourhood out for awe-some winter fun.

The festivities carry on with our Winter Classic outdoor hockey game at 4 p.m. The hockey game features the Glendale FOG facing-off against their archrival Calgary Bulldogs. We need all the fans we can get, so come on out and cheer on Glendale. And if that’s not enough, the action continues after hockey with the Glendale Winter Bash, a rocking party that will have you dancing to the sweet tunes of B-Man, Bobby Bass and the Kid while connecting with friends all evening long. Cost for the evening event is $25 and includes an outstanding Texas-T BBQ meal. We are grateful to the Home Sweet Home Team Century 21 Bamber Realty for sponsoring our event.

Proceeds from the event will help support Glendale programs and improvements at our hall and facilities.

Our board had a long discussion at our January meeting about two redevelopment proposals that fall outside our communi-ty’s R-C1 zoning. Councillor Richard Pootmans listened as sev-eral residents from Granlea Cres. and 19th Avenue SW voiced opposition to the proposals for an independent garage suite and a secondary basement suite. The Granlea Cres. garage suite proposal has already received support of city administra-tion, despite community opposition. The proposal goes before City Council on March 13, when residents will be able to offer their final opinions in person before the mayor and councillors. The 19th Avenue administrative hearing was to be held Jan. 29, after Thumper press time.

Glendale is one of the lucky communities to be awarded a $29,000 facilities improvement grant under the Canada 150 program. Funds will be used to improve hall lighting, renovate the washrooms and repair exterior stucco and eaves troughs.

It’s already time to start planning to clean out the basement and Glendale’s Community Clean-up day is scheduled for Sunday, April 30 this year. Look for more details in upcoming Thumpers.

The Board was disappointed to receive the resignation of 2nd vice-president Todd Lines at our last meeting. We will be sad to see Todd leave the board but thank him for his years of service. Todd will continue to lead Glendale’s annual Stampede Break-fast so you can count on another great feast this July.

February 3 First Quarter (waxing)Moonlight is strong, encouraging leaf growth. It is a good time for planting, especially two days before the full moon. Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Fertilize as close to the full moon as pos-sible.

February 10 Full Moon (waning)As the moon wanes, the energy is drawing down. Strong gravitational pull but moonlight is decreasing putting energy into the roots.

February 18 Last Quarter (waning)Decreased gravitational pull and moonlight. A resting period. Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Dry herbs, flowers and fruit. If you want to control growth or encourage rooting, perform the necessary activities during the waning moon.

February 26 New Moon (waxing)Increasing moonlight, lunar gravity pulls water up encouraging plant growth and proliferation. Graft-ing, transplanting, re-potting, and watering. Gather herbs used for essential oils. Oil content is more con-centrated at this time.

Our community has quite a few sightings of wild or feral animals, from coyotes to bobcats, deer, rabbits and all sorts of bird life. If you have any photos of I would love to see them! I’m working on a long-term art project that incorporates these photos and/or stories either as part of the piece or as a reference. I would love to hear how and what you saw. Date/time, location would be helpful too. Materials will be credited if you wish. I’m looking for anything unusual from birds, mammals, reptiles, etc. Photos will not be released to any further distribution.

I was flabbergasted this year to have a red-wing black-bird nesting in the drainage pond at the 17th Avenue

AHS Public Health Forum InviteAlberta Health Services (AHS), in partnership with Alberta Health, is initiating conversations across Calgary and Central Zones to look at the delivery of health services in 2031 and beyond.

A public blog on AHS’ website invites all community members across both zones to share their perspectives and participate in conversations about how healthcare could be structured in 15 years.

The blog site builds upon in-person meetings that have taken place across both zones through late November and early December. These included visioning sessions, smaller group workshops and meetings that involved community members (including individuals typically under-represented in formal engagement activities), health partners and stakeholders. They were asked to examine ways to co-design and co-deliver a sustain-able, quality health system that promotes healthy com-munities and provides appropriate access to services, programs and facilities across Alberta.

“We are exploring new, innovative ways to structure and deliver care,” says Lori Anderson, Senior Operating Officer at the South Health Campus. “It’s important that we work together because the healthcare model of the future involves more community-based services and shared opportunities between AHS and community partners.”

Projections of health service delivery in 15 years show an increase in older demographics and more chronic health conditions.

“In the healthcare system of the future, the emphasis needs to be more preventative with proactive measures that will keep all Albertans, including our children and grandchildren, healthier,” says Larry Albrecht, Chair of the Prairie Mountain Health Advisory Council. “It’s also expected that health services will be more community-based.”

Opportunities for community member input will continue throughout the year-long planning process. The feedback and ideas will contribute to informing a high-level health system strategy proposal, which will be further developed in 2017.

AHS is currently focusing long-range planning efforts on Calgary and Central Zones. Similar planning in Edmonton Zone is ongoing. Long-range planning for North and South Zones will follow. For more information on how you can be involved, please contact [email protected] or join the conversation at www.ahs.ca/longrangeplanning.

Parliament resumed sitting on January 30th and will now be in session until mid June. 2017 will be an exciting year on many fronts.

Many communities across the country began celebrating Can-ada’s 150th birthday with New Year’s kickoff events. Ottawa is expecting a record year for tourism as a lot of effort has been spent encouraging Canadians to visit our nation’s capital and in the U.S. where a favorable exchange rate is providing good value for Americans.

A number of major decisions will be facing the Liberal government in 2017 including dealing with a continued sluggish economy. A lot of attention will be focused on relations with the newly installed President Trump. Clearly the President’s path forward does not run parallel to our Prime Minister especially in areas such as climate change.

2017 will also see the selection of a new leader for the Conser-vative party of Canada on May 27th and also for the NDP in Oc-tober.

Closer to home, a new carbon tax is now in effect and this year will bring another significant bump to the minimum wage. Al-berta’s jobless situation continues to be a trouble spot for the entire country. Even though expectations are that oil prices will continue to slowly move upward during the year, indications are that will not necessarily translate into additional hiring.

Our federal Conservative caucus will continue to present op-tions to the federal government such as the Alberta jobs task force report submitted late last month. The federal government could immediately put thousands of laid-off oil field workers back to work by funding an environmental clean-up of aban-doned oil and gas wells. A report late in 2016 indicates the num-ber of wells has doubled in the past year as small energy compa-nies have gone out of business and landowners and the crown are now responsible. This is but one small initiative the federal government could launch to assist the unemployed in Alberta.

I will speak more about Alberta’s job task force report next month in my column.

As the official opposition we will continue to work on your be-half to ensure the needs of Albertans and residents of Calgary Signal Hill are heard by the Government. If you have specific questions or feedback, we would like to hear from you as we want to bring your voice to the government on these and other issues.

Bow Trail widening and Intersection ImprovementsThe City is making upgrades to provide a better road network by accommodating existing and future traffic volumes on Bow Trail SW.

This particular project involves a number of features:•Bow Trail widening from two to four lanes between

Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street SW,•Intersection improvements at 85 Street and Bow Trail

by adding dedicated left- and right-turn lanes as well

as through lanes in each direction,•A pathway along Bow Trail connecting pathways on

Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street SW.

You may have noticed late last year work started on improving the intersection at Bow Trail and 85 Street SW. This work included widening southbound 85 Street south of Bow Trail to two lanes, matching the road alignment further south. Improvements also included extending the sidewalk on the west side of 85 Street north to Bow Trail. For complete information, project updates, and timelines, please visit calgary.ca/bow-trail-swrr.

Chronic foot pain is no fun, and can spoil your enjoyment of life. One of the most common causes of pain in the feet, affecting nearly two million peo-ple yearly, is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament that connects the heel bone (calcaneous) and the toes. This ligament is composed of fibrous bands of tissue, and runs along the entire bottom of the foot supporting 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 tendons and muscles during standing and movement. Plantar fascia may become inflamed when tiny tears occur in these delicate tissues.

The most common symptom of planar fasciitis is a burning or aching pain on the bottom of the foot in the mornings, often near the heel. The pain tends to decrease with activity, but may recur after periods of walking or standing. Half of people diagnosed with plantar fasciitis say that their pain is constant; 90% say that it hurts when they press on the area around the heel.

There are many potential causes of plantar fasciitis. Overuse during exercise or physical activity is one of the most common, and athletes who run, jump, or perform other repetitive movements that put pressure on the feet are prone to this condition. It may also be caused or aggravated by arthritis and diabetes, especially in the elderly. Wearing the wrong shoes or shoes with little or no arch support or cushioning can put strain on the tendons and, over time, cause plantar fasciitis symptoms. Improper footwear is even more likely to be a cause if you have flat feet, high arches, overpronation, or underpronation. Being overweight can also place additional strain on your feet that can lead to foot, ankle, knee, hip and back pain symptoms.

Whatever the cause, plantar fasciitis can take all the fun out of walking or even moving around easily. More important, it is a condition that should be diagnosed and treated early, before it becomes more serious. Tra-ditional medical treatments tend to focus on reducing the pain (via anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen or more serious pain relievers) and alleviating pressure on the heel. Unfortunately, this regimen does not address the potential causes of the disorder. For many, chiropractic adjustments of the feet and related joints (in addition to traditional approaches such as icing and avoiding for a time the movements that seem to exacerbate the pain) may help to restore a proper range of motion, and thus remove the cause of the problem.

More advanced computer technologies like our GaitScan measures how you walk or run and can provide valuable data for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of your symptoms. Custom orthotic therapy is often covered by health insurance plans. Our modern slim but supportive custom inserts are not only comfortable and fit easily into your shoes, but they outperform popular over-the-counter cushion inserts by both relieving pain and preventing future occurrences of it. Com-bine this with appropriate lifestyle modifications, anti-inflammatory diets and Frequency Specific Micro-current therapy that clinically reduces inflammation and pain while healing scar tissue, tears and adhesions in the fascia, and you’ve got a recipe for success!

Of course how quickly these therapies may provide relief depends on each individual case, but relief can be found. Mention this article to receive a free computer GaitScan assessment and consultation to help you diagnose the root cause of your plantar fasciitis symptoms ($50 savings!)

The arrival of February means longer days and more time to spend outdoors with family or friends. And if you are like me and enjoy Alberta’s natural beauty, then be sure to mark February 21 on your calendars because starting then you can make reservations at camp sites across Alberta. You can reserve a spot online at Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca or by phoning the Contact Centre at 1-877-537-2757 (toll-free in North America). Till then - happy skiing!

February is also when Albertans celebrate Family Day. First celebrated in 1990, Family Day has become an op-portunity for many Albertans to spend time with their families. However, if you have to work this holiday to provide for your family it is important that you be fairly compensated for doing so. If you are unsure, I encourage you to call the Employment Standards Contact Centre at 780-427-3731 or 1-877-427-3731. Many have also asked about other initiatives our government is taking to help Alberta families. I am pleased to report here that the gov-ernment is currently assessing proposals to create 18 new child care facilities that will directly support Alberta working families. The government anticipates that suc-cessful applicants will be notified in March 2017. Be sure to watch for this announcement!

On the doorsteps of Calgary Currie many of you have told me being a Climate Leader is important because it helps diversify our province’s economy. In early January qualifying households should have received their first payment of Alberta’s Climate Leadership Adjustment Rebate (ACLAR) - a tax-free amount paid to low and middle income individuals and families - that is designed to help you adjust to the new provincial carbon price. A variety of programs and services provided by Energy Ef-ficiency Alberta are also being implemented to ensure that we remain Climate Leaders. For more information on the installation of energy-efficient products or small scale renewables for your home, business, non-profits, or institutions please contact the agency directly at 1-844-357-5604 (toll-free). In addition to these measures, the new Capital Investment Tax Credit is designed to en-courage timely capital investments that offer opportuni-ties for economic growth. The first application period be-

gan January 16 and will end later this month on February 15. For more information on how to apply please contact: [email protected].

February’s arrival also means that my colleagues and I will be returning to the legislature where I work hard to represent the interests of you and your family. For me to do this well, it is important that I hear from you directly. That is why you will see me out door knocking at every op-portunity or speaking with your neighbours at community events. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for sharing your hopes for Alberta with me, and in par-ticular, to those of you who returned to my office the mail-out surveys that you received in December. And as always, if you have any additional questions, concerns, or would like me to attend an event in your community, please do not hesitate to contact my office by phone (403-246-4794), by email ([email protected]), or in person (2108 B - 33 Avenue SW).
