FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, Many of you kindly responded to last year’s survey about the church, your views on it and your involvement in it. Thank you. From your answers and comments it was clear that the constant changing of times and venues for the services between our two churches of St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s was wearisome and impractical. We have therefore introduced a new pattern of services, which we hope will be more convenient. To facilitate the new times it is necessary to have a repeating two-month cycle, Month A followed by Month B, followed by Month A, followed by month B and so on. All the main Sunday services, in both churches, are now at 9.30 am: there are no longer any 11.15 am services. They are normally services of Holy Communion (Eucharist) but on the third Sunday of the month the service is a family-focussed Morning Praise. The 8 am Eucharist continues at St. Mary’s on the third Sunday of every month. Evensong continues at St. Peter’s (4.30 pm during GMT and 6 pm during BST). However, so that Evensong does not coincide with a 9.30 am service in the same church it will be on alternating third and fourth Sundays of the month, depending whether it is Month A or Month B. The dates and times of services will continue to be listed in the Newsletter and on the parish website. I hope you will find that the new pattern of worship and times of services will be more convenient. Please do let me know your views. With best wishes, Volunteers from the River Stour Trust (Lower River Group) Invite you to an Open evening At the Assembly Rooms Dedham Thursday 18 February

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear Friends,

Many of you kindly responded to last year’s survey about the church, your views on it and your involvement

in it. Thank you.

From your answers and comments it was clear that the constant changing of times and venues for the

services between our two churches of St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s was wearisome and impractical. We have

therefore introduced a new pattern of services, which we hope will be more convenient. To facilitate the new

times it is necessary to have a repeating two-month cycle, Month A followed by Month B, followed by Month

A, followed by month B and so on.

All the main Sunday services, in both churches, are now at 9.30 am: there are no longer any 11.15 am

services. They are normally services of Holy Communion (Eucharist) but on the third Sunday of the month

the service is a family-focussed Morning Praise.

The 8 am Eucharist continues at St. Mary’s on the third Sunday of every month. Evensong continues at St.

Peter’s (4.30 pm during GMT and 6 pm during BST). However, so that Evensong does not coincide with a

9.30 am service in the same church it will be on alternating third and fourth Sundays of the month, depending

whether it is Month A or Month B.

The dates and times of services will continue to be listed in the Newsletter and on the parish website.

I hope you will find that the new pattern of worship and times of services will be more convenient. Please

do let me know your views.

With best wishes,

Operation Christmas Child 125 filled shoeboxes were gathered in last November by Claire Arculus through St Mary’s and St Peter’s Churches (61), Boxted St Peter’s School (22) and Langham School (32). They were passed to Keith and Shirley Groome* of Langham, who took them, with others from the Clacton and Colchester areas, to the Sudbury depot to be sorted before dispatch to deprived children in Belarus. *For nearly 20 years the indefatigable Keith and Shirley Groome have been Operation Christmas Child’s principal shoebox collectors for much of North Essex.

HEATING OIL SCHEME Orders for the next delivery of heating oil under the scheme must be placed in person at the Langham Community Shop by 5 pm on Wednesday 3 February. The minimum order is 500L and there is a registration charge of £2 (£1 for Shop volunteers). Delivery is expected within 5 working days of 3 February.

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY Collections in aid of the Children’s Society at the Carol, Crib and Christingle Services at St Mary’s and St Peter’s amounted to a remarkable £344.

The house collection boxes will be gathered up in early February for the contents to be counted. Holders of boxes are warmly invited to bring them to either church on 7 or 14 February but if this is not convenient, your local CS representatives: Gill Pullen (Boxted) Tel. 273804 Helen Sims (Langham) Tel. 321286 will arrange to pick them up.

THE EVERGREENS As always, December was a particularly active month for the Boxted Evergreen Club. A week after enjoying a most delicious Christmas Lunch at the “New Times”, Tiptree, followed by a visit to Perrywoods Garden Centre. Members were later delightfully entertained by Barry Peters at their Christmas Party. Everyone had a splendid time, with mouth-watering party food prepared by Elaine Mott and Barbara Woodmason. The Evergreens are very grateful to the pupils of Boxted St Peter’s School for their kind invitation to watch the final dress rehearsal for the School’s sparkling Christmas Production.

LANGHAM WI The December meeting was actually a very lively Christmas Party. Members brought an amazing array of food on the theme of quiches and a tasty se-lection of puddings. Catherine and Richard Hinchcliffe, singer and guitarist respectively, kindly provided the entertainment. 2016 began with an illustrated and enthusiastic talk by novelist Liz Trenow about her family’s in-volvement in the silk-weaving in-dustry from 1666. The business moved from Spitalfields to Hal-stead and Sudbury, where Warners is still an exclusive silk fabric producer. Her novels have local settings and often depict Sudbury and silk-manufacturing.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP Judith Blatch spoke at the November meeting about the old Sudbury firm of Winch & Blatch. The Winch family had traded in the town from the early 1800s and moved to the present Market Hill site when their original premises burnt down in 1922.

The picture was taken by a Boxted resident with children who is understandably outraged, as many other residents of both Boxted and Langham are, by the irresponsible conduct of the few.

FOULING BY DOGS The fouling by dogs of footpaths, footways and other public spaces, such as Boxted King George Playing Field and Langham Recreation Ground remains a major problem in both villages. Dog faeces are not merely a nasty inconvenience: they constitute a health hazard, especially to children, for whom ingestion of even small amounts after casual contact may lead to blindness. Dog-owners are legally obliged to clear up the mess when their pet defecates in a public place and in both villages bins are sited at places where the faeces may be readily deposited. The bins are both numerous and obvious but this does not seem to deter some dog-owners, as may be seen from the picture below, which shows dog faeces within yards of one of Boxted’s bins.

John Blatch came from London to join the firm in 1945 and became sole owner in 1960. The firm now occupies four buildings, within one of which patrons of the Coffee Shop may still see the 13th century roof structure. The year ended on a high note when author, cartoonist, local historian and broadcaster, Charlie Haylock (see below) gave a characteristically humorous talk on the history of spoken English. Its origins lie in in the dialects of incomers from Scandinavia and the Frisian Isles and it was many centuries before ‘Standard English’ developed. He ended his talk with a very enlightening oral demonstration of dialects happily

still spoken today.
