I tried to talk him out of it, but he was insistent. So I told him he could buy a train set, but we would not return it if he got tired of it. With that understanding, we bought a train set which we set up in the basement and watched it go round and around. That quickly grew tiring. The next morning, Peter was in tears, wanting to return it. Reminding him of our agreement, I said there must be more we could do with it. So we went to hobby store in St. Cloud and bought a book about model railroading. With time, we bought switches and buildings and added more track until the layout filled a 4X8 sheet of plywood in the corner of Peter’s bedroom. When we moved to Clear Lake, we quickly added two more sheets of plywood to the layout. We added more engines, cars, track, switches, and buildings. The layout kept getting bigger and bigger as I got more interested in it. The church eventually built us a train room in the corner of the basement of the parsonage. When we left Clear Lake, all the train stuff was packed into boxes. Some of it was put in storage. Peter took the rest of it, thinking he would some day build a layout in his basement for his sons. But his wife, Paula, had other ideas about the use of their basement. Fast forward four years. The October 2014 issue of THE COVENANT COMPANION had an article about retired North Park Theological Seminary professor, John Weborg. Among other things, it told about his love of trains. John subscribes to five railroad periodicals. Occasionally he packs a lunch and drives to Rochelle, Illinois, where he spends the day watching trains go by. The article inspired me to get back into model railroading. Nina agreed, saying it would be a great thing to do with the grandchildren. So I began to build a new layout in the basement of the parsonage in October. I am thoroughly enjoying myself. It is a great winter-time activity. And the grand children love it. Being the analytical person that I am, I ask myself why I enjoy it so much. I have come to two conclusions. Number 1, I long to live in a perfect world and am trying to create it on a miniature scale in a corner of the basement. Number 2, It gives me the opportunity to express the creative part of me. Being made in the image of God, I think all of us have a creative drive. People express it in different ways. People enjoy sewing, knitting, quilting, baking, painting, gardening, woodworking, writing, tilling the soil, restoring old furniture, houses, tractors or cars, etc. In fact, work can be a form of worship (Did you know that in both the Old and New Testaments the words for “work” and “worship” are the same. It is the context in which the word appears that determines how it is translated). When it comes to being like Jesus, we often talk about being loving, forbearing, forgiving, merciful, gracious, and kind. Karmel Covenant Church History

Music has always been an important part

of Karmel. In 1892 a motion was made

to buy an organ for the Meeting House.

Alex Bjorklund was the 1st organist. 1-1

-1906 David Olson (Arlene Selin &

Harley Olson’s Dad) appointed organist,

probably served before that, a position he

held until at least 1944.

Friendship Friends are one of the ways God takes care of us. We need all the things friendship entails from other human contact such as encouragement, companionship, love, honesty, loyalty, understanding and so

many more things friendship offers.

Our friendship with our sisters in Christ is like recipes of goodness for us. They bake up something

special. You may have heard the saying “In the cookies of life, friends are the chocolate chips”.

Sisters in Christ Friendship Recipe

• Shortening – Provides texture. Our fellowship and friendship with our sisters in the Lord add depth and texture to our lives. We blend together in unity as part of the body of Christ.

• Sugar – Adds sweetness. If we didn’t have sugar in our cookies, we would miss it. The same is true with our sisters. We can’t leave them out of our lives.

• Eggs – Holds ingredients together. Sisters in the Lord are someone to lean on. We are stronger because of them, their prayers, and their love in the Lord.

• Vanilla -– Adds flavor. Sisters add that flavor we need. Without friends and fellowship we become kind of bland.

• Flour – Adds substance. Sisters give us many things by mentoring us when we don’t even know it. Their shared testimonies and the way they live their lives has an impact on us.

• Baking Soda – Leavens. Friendship with our sisters in Christ lightens our burdens through their prayer and encouragement.

• Salt – Enhances flavor. Friendships add flavor by improving the tastefulness and quality in our lives. Friends are the type of people that know just what we are going through and are there when we need them.

• Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips – Our sister friends tell us what they feel and think and that’s Okay. They can be honest and truthful to us.

• Nuts (optional) – Just a little craziness in a sister friend is great. Sometimes a little zaniness in

our friends can be just the ingredient we need.

Friendships take a lot of time and effort to bake up but they are worth it when we sense that sweet

aroma and special bond they bring. Friends that have Jesus in common will have lasting relationships.

Upcoming Events
