Message from NET Leadership

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever celebrated the silver anniversary of the famed record company when it debuted in 1983, and it became an immediate sensation.

Buzzworthy moments included reunions by The Miracles, The Supremes and The Jackson 5; the first battle of the bands between The Temptations and Four Tops; and the hottest comedian in the world at the time, Richard Pryor, as host. But, the highlight that generated the most discussion was Michael Jackson’s world premiere of the moonwalk.

Unseen for more than 20 years, the incredible Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever comes to NET Television this month, featuring many more major Motown artists including Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Jr. Walker and the Commodores.

Debbie Hamlett Assistant General Manager, Development and Marketing Proud NET Member

As a public media station, NET strives to bring you

varying points of view and perspective about our cities, our state and our world. We want many voices and conversations to be part of our programming, as well as our work in the community. Our goal is diversity – but what exactly does that mean? As I recently discovered, defining diversity is more difficult than I thought.

This month, NET welcomed a team from NPR to facilitate our continued discussions about diversity and how it touches all of our work – both internally and externally. The word diversity typically brings up thoughts about race or gender, but the NPR team guided us in our exploration of how geography, class, age, ideology, sexual orientation and faith can also be part of the definition of diversity.

Presenter Keith Woods, NPR’s vice president of diversity in news and operations, defined diversity as “inclusion in the face of exclusion.” And, I was intrigued by one of the questions

posed to us – Who isn’t in the conversation? As we concluded our two-day workshop, we were encouraged to “suspend the process” in our interactions with people – pausing to gather information, add reflection and gain insight. This clarity is valuable, according to Woods, because it results in sharper leaders and a stronger workforce.

I believe it can also result in a stronger NET. Reflecting our community is an essential part of our mission. The core of our journalist promise is that we are reporting about you. In the coming months, you will find out how you can participate in a range of issues as a member of our community.

Upcoming NET Happenings

Coming Spring 2015

The longest running war in human history is fought with razor-sharp scalpels, invisible rays and lethal poisons, and its battlegrounds are deep within the human cell. This spring, Ken Burns presents Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Siddhartha Mukherjee.

Airing March 30 and 31, and April 1, at 8 p.m. CT on NET Television, Burns’ six-hour film interweaves a sweeping historical documentary with intimate profiles of patients and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, to the brink of effective treatments.

Community screenings of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies and town hall-style discussions are being planned for late February and early March in Lincoln, Omaha and Norfolk. NET Television is also producing a Nebraska-based documentary about cancer that will air Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m. CT on NET Television.

Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies Community Screening & Discussion Thursday, March 12 at 6 p.m. CT Bryan Health East • 1600 South 48th Street • Lincoln

NET recently faced the failure of one of these critical

tubes at our Hastings KHNE television transmitter, forcing us to operate at only 10 percent of our normal power for three weeks. This greatly impacted the quality of our over-the-air signal for viewers in the area who don’t watch NET on cable or satellite. KHNE is one of nine full power DTV (digital) broadcast stations and 15 DTV translators that make up the NET Television network. The network is a partnership between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Commission. NET Radio is comprised of nine full power FM stations and five FM translators.

NET Maintains Statewide Networks

Amazingly, there was only one replacement tube available in the whole world, and it was located in England. The tube cost more than $45,000, and required specialized technical assistance to install. Our Hastings area viewers were frustrated but patient as we worked through the challenges of locating, shipping and installing this rare part.

There are three other transmitters that use the same tube technology in NET’s statewide television network, and our engineering staff is working to determine a cause for the premature tube failure, as well as working to locate a spare one should it be needed. Although there is newer, less expensive transmitter technology available, it has not been cost-effective for NET to replace all of its existing equipment. Operating and maintaining the statewide television network, as well as nine full power radio transmitters for NET Radio, is an expensive proposition. Financial support from the State of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska are essential to maintaining this network and ensuring that every citizen of Nebraska has access to NET Television and Radio programming. A technical outage such as the one we experienced in Hastings reminds us all of the importance of this stable source of funding.

Where in the world is... a power amplifier tube?

Morning Edition on NET RadioWaking up is hard to do, but it’s easier with NPR’s Morning Edition. Hosts Renée Montagne, Steve Inskeep and David Greene bring the day’s stories and news to radio listeners on the go.

Morning Edition is the most listened-to news radio program in the country, and takes listeners around America and the world.

It provides news in context, airs thoughtful ideas and commentary, and reviews important new music, books, and events in the arts – all with voices and sounds that invite listeners to experience the stories.

Here in Nebraska, NET Radio’s Ben Bohall hosts local segments of Morning Edition, reporting news and weather information for listeners across the state. “It’s always been kind of my dream job to be a Morning Edition host,” he said.

The Plains have brought forth many famous authors. But the writers you’ve never heard of are worth reading, too. Fine writers have been and still are lost for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of their work. A new NET

Radio series, website and iBook have been created for listeners and readers to discover Plains authors who achieved fame, but for various reasons have become “lost” to contemporary readers.

A collaboration between NET Radio and the Center for Great Plains Studies, Lost Writers of the Plains offers a historical interpretation of why the writing, careers or Plains connection has been forgotten for a Bohemian poet, a stark realist, a champion of African American literature, a defender of the common man – and four other intriguing authors.

For essays, audio, video, poems, plays and the works as they originally appeared in the journal Prairie Schooner, go to netNebraska.org/lostwriters. (The site will be available in mid-February.) The iBook will be available from the iTunes store.

Beginning March 6, essays about the authors will air three times each week on NET Radio – during Friday Live (Fridays at 9 – 10 a.m. CT); during Weekend Edition (Saturdays at 9:35 a.m. CT); and during All Things Considered (Sundays at 4:35 p.m. CT). The featured writers, in order of appearance in the series, are: LaSelle Gilman, Margaret Haughawout, Dorothy Thomas, Bertram Austin Lewis, W. Zolley Lerner, Earl Guy, Faye Cashatt Lewis and Ervin Krause.

State of Education: Standing Up to Poverty and It Takes a Community

Risher to Lead NET Communication Efforts

NET and Nebraska Loves Public Schools are partners in The State of Education – a series that helps Nebraska’s students and teachers meet their most pressing educational challenges. This month, two programs from the series look at the

role community partnerships play in public schools and what happens when students don’t have access to basic necessities.

The State of Education: It Takes a Community looks at how everyday Nebraskans participate in public education to ensure the viability of our state. New models define education as a shared responsibility in our society, and suggest the problems are for whole communities to solve, not just individual teachers, schools or districts.

“What schools need to be able to do is develop well-rounded, diverse, creative thinkers. It’s a big task and not one that schools can do alone,” said Luisa Palomo, a teacher at Liberty Elementary School in Omaha.

Most of us enjoy having enough to eat, a safe place to live and a warm bed to sleep in each night, but what happens when a child doesn’t have access to what we consider so basic? The State of Education: Standing Up to Poverty explores the issues facing low-income students across our state and the impact socio-economic barriers can have on an entire school and community. The program challenges viewers to get involved and offers examples of how communities and individuals can help close the opportunity gap.

Cameron Risher, NET’s new Director of Communications, has worked in communications and media for more than 15 years, mostly in public media. And, she’s happy to be back

in the industry working at NET, one of the nation’s premiere organizations. Risher will lead the team responsible for communication, promotion, advertising and social media efforts on behalf of NET Television and Radio.

Risher worked for a television production subsidiary of WIS, the NBC affiliate station in Columbia, South Carolina before she essentially crafted and filled the position of Community Relations Manager at South Carolina Educational Television and

Radio (SCETV). For almost eight years, she was part of a team that planned the station’s outreach events, as well as directed advertising and public relations.

Originally from Connecticut, Risher also worked for an independent production company that produced a children’s television series distributed to public television stations through American Public Television. Most recently, she was the Director of Communications and Events for the South Carolina Petroleum Marketing Association, a statewide organization supporting the petroleum marketers and the convenience store industry.

As an alumna of the University of South Carolina, she will be cheering on the Gamecocks from afar.  When she’s not working, Risher enjoys sharing her time with others. “I am looking forward to volunteering in the community and getting to know Nebraska and the ‘neighborhood’ – a la ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” she said with a laugh.

Engaging Nebraska

The Italian AmericansTuesdays, Feb. 17 & 24 at 8 p.m. CT on NET1

The new series, The Italian Americans explores the evolution of Italian Americans from the late nineteenth century to today, from “outsiders” once viewed with suspicion and mistrust to some of the most prominent leaders of business, politics and the arts today.

The Italian Americans reveals the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group’s experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. Unlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to America to stay. At the turn of the 20th century, most came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. Nearly half of the first generation Italian immigrants did return to Italy. For those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family that had always been at the center of their lives.

Have a question about membership, estate gifts or planning your will?

Charitable Gift Annuities Benefit NET and You

Would receiving a fixed amount of money, spread in equal payments during the rest of your lifetime, be a valuable supplement to your retirement income?

The NET Foundation can help reach this goal by establishing a charitable gift annuity with your gift of $10,000, or more. In exchange for your participation in this simple contract, NET will pay you, and if you wish, a second beneficiary. The income you receive is determined by the amount of your gift and your age(s). Any residual assets remain with NET upon your death, and the payments are guaranteed by the general resources of the NET Foundation.

Gift annuities can be established using cash or appreciated securities held for longer than one year. When cash is used, more of your income is tax free.

BENEFITS To You:

• Generous, partially tax-free income for life

• An immediate income tax deduction

• Reduced capital gain taxes if appreciated securities are used to establish the annuity

• Membership in NET’s Friends of the Future Society

• The satisfaction of making a significant contribution to the future of NET and public broadcasting

A similar type of annuity is the deferred charitable gift annuity. With a deferred gift annuity, you could receive even higher life income payments and a higher immediate income tax deduction because the payments to you do not begin until a specified future date that you choose. In either case, at your death, the proceeds of the gift annuity become part of a permanently restricted endowment at NET.

The NET website offers more information about charitable gift annuities, including a calculator that can provide a financial illustration based on your expected contributions and age. (Visit netNebraska.org/CGAcalculator) NET’s planned giving officers are also available to discuss planned giving options and what might work for you.
