Scholarship Awareness Parents of all high school and middle school students should read this next sentence carefully. Nearly 100% of the scholarship offers I read and distribute to seniors ask for details of the student’s and community and volunteer service! Encourage your child to be involved in giving back to the community through volunteer service. Academics, character and involvement in school activities are important, but, foundations want to give to students who give of themselves. Students should start young and not wait until their senior year to try and pad their resume’. Seniors Parents of seniors, if your child is remotely thinking about going to college next year, you need to get the FAFSA completed as soon as possible. Also, remind your kids to check for any new scholarship opportunities. Only 4 months remain until graduation! *FAFSA: Any student applying for federal aid (or aid in general) must complete the FAFSA. The Office of Federal Student Aid has also created a video/DVD that may be obtained by calling (800) 394-7084. The video includes information for both students and parents. FAFSA also has an easily navigated Web site (fafsa.ed.gov) where families can register for a PIN (the password is necessary for applying online) and find out everything they need to know about the form. Many colleges have priority dates in February and March but no firm deadline for applying for financial aid. Urge students to apply by the priority date. This is the date by which the college needs the application in order to award the most attractive aid package. After this date, funds may be limited or depleted, and students may not get as much aid as they need.

Board Comments Neil Allison, Board Chairman, shared information he had received from OSBA. He reminded the board that their role is the board of appeals, so if they receive a complaint they should refer the complainant to the school administrators and to follow the established procedure for dealing with complaints. The board may not discuss complaints of any nature in executive session without following the appropriate complaint procedure and board members should not discuss the complaint with other board members as it may compromise their objectivity in the event the issue comes to a hearing. OSBA offers Board Member Roles and Responsibilities Trainings and Mr. Allison would like to pursue having them present it to our board.

Executive Session Executive Session as provided by ORS 192.660 paragraph f. for personnel and student matters was entered at 8:00 p.m. Regular session reconvened at 8:28 p.m.

Adjournment The meeting was declared adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Complete copies of the minutes are posted in each building and on the district website, www.adriansd.com. Copies may be requested from the District Office.

Attention farmers! The Adrian Ag Department is looking to apply for the Monsanto: America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant program. We need local producers to nominate our school district for this grant opportunity. The more nominations we get, the more points we acquire for the grant. We are competing against the other school districts in Malheur County only. Visit the website: www.growruraleducation.com or contact Anna-Marie Chamberlain for help in nominating our school. Congratulations to the Adrian FFA Farm Business Management Team which consisted of Xavier, Chase, Morgan and Mike. The team finished third and has the opportunity to advance to the state competition which will occur at the Oregon FFA State Convention. There were 30 participants and Xavier Lopez was the high individual! Congrats guys! Six Adrian FFA members have successfully earned the Oregon FFA State Degree! These members will be recognized on stage during State Convention, which will be in Bend this year over spring break. Congratulations Tane’t Campbell, Annie Hungate, Xavier Lopez, Kellie Barraza, Quincy Pendergrass, and Becca Furtado. Your hard work and dedication to the FFA has paid off!

A very successful Scholastic book fair was held at the Adrian School Library on January 23 and 24. During the week before the fair a group of middle school girls filled the display case outside the library with books and items highlighting the Reading Oasis theme. The day before the fair began parents and students unpacked boxes and set out books in the library. Parents, students, and other community members came to look at (and buy!) books on Thursday and Friday nights. Volunteers packed up the remaining books on Monday morning. We are very grateful for all the help and support. Thanks to all of you who have shopped (or will shop?) at our online book fair available through February 4 at www.scholastic.com/fair by clicking on More Details and going to the Shop Online section.

What Does the Fox Say?—Tane’T Campbell By Quincy Pendergrass She’s bat the cat, she’s sassy and fat, and she can change her attitude just like that; Bat was quite the temperamental cat. As we all know people, as well as animals, can be quite temperamental or emotional at times, but one thing is for sure – animals are definitely helpful to humans when we are caught in times of struggle. Senior Tane’t Campbell has always had a love for any kind of animal, but her first animal was Ozzie the ferret. Tane’t was devastated when they had to get rid of Ozzie but she then fell in love with her cat named Bat, and now Tane’t has seven dogs at her house along with her turtle, horses, pigs, and sheep. It is no surprise that for her senior project Tane’t decided to focus on veterinary medicine for her main career. Tane’t selected Kelsey Zimmerman as her senior project advisor, and her physical project advisor was Stephanie Allison. Tane’t’s chose physical therapy, nursing, and veterinary medicine for her three career areas. Her favorite portion of senior project was her job shadows; Tane’t completed six job shadows. Her first job shadow was at Ontario physical therapy, and she also completed a job shadow at Malheur Memorial health center. For her focus on Veterinary medicine she job shadowed four different veterinary hospitals that included the following: Ontario Animal Hospital, Vale Vet Clinic, Treasure Valley Vet Clinic, and Owyhee Vet Clinic. Tane’t’s favorite job shadow was her day at Owyhee Vet Clinic, she got to do a lot of hands-on activities throughout the day and she also got to see all the different sides of being in veterinary medicine. For her Physical project Tane’t decided to put on a petting zoo at the PTO carnival at the school. At the end of the day she discovered that although the petting zoo was a success it definitely required a lot of work and she was glad to have that stressful portion of senior project completed. She had a sheep, a pig, a horse, a calf, a dog, a rabbit, and a chicken at the petting zoo, most of the children said the favorites were the calf and the pig. All of the animals behaved very well during the project; however, when they were loading the animals at the end the sheep got away and they had to chase it through the town of Adrian, what an exciting end to a successful day. All of the seniors are required to do a research paper for a portion of senior project, and Tane’t decided to do hers on the study of dogs that can detect cancer in humans. She has found that this is a very interesting topic and will hopefully, with more studies, save many lives in the near future. For the future Tane’t plans to attend college for two years at Linn-Benton Community College, and then hopefully get accepted into the Veterinary program at Oregon State University.

Who doesn’t love a good barbecue—Austin Meyer "World Leaders Are BBQ Eaters "

By: Rebecca Furtado There’s one thing that is the same in the world and it’s the smell of meat on a grill. Whether they are cooking steak or hamburgers they should do it over a grill. Every man should know how to cook over the grill even if they are seniors.

Austin Meyer transferred from Joseph, Oregon as a senior of 2013-2014. Along with the move with his parents and younger sister Brooke, Austin had to experience the new school with new people and most important, senior project. Senior Project is required everywhere in the state of Oregon and Austin Meyer found this out very quickly. Austin’s three Careers he decided upon for Senior Project were Mechanic, Culinary Arts, and a Park Ranger. Austin’s dad pursues the career as a Park Ranger at the Owyhee State Park. And because parents influence much of our lives no matter what they say or do, Austin also wants to do the same as his dad, become a Park Ranger. For Senior Project you have to complete many hours of job shadowing. Austin Job Shadowed Jim Meyer at the State Park, Greg Saunders at the Saunders Repair in Vale, Oregon, and Randy Belnap at the RNL Auto Repair also in Vale, Oregon. For Austin’s Physical project he wanted to give something back to the community. So he thought that he would give the community a place where they could do what? Cook their meat. He fixed up a place at the State Park so it is suitable to do so.

Austin’s Senior project advisor is Mrs. Gordon and his physical project advisor is Ms. Yano. Austin said without the help of his advisors he would not have accomplished as much as he has. Austin wants to attend a Trade School someplace close to home, someplace like Nampa, Idaho.

Born to Serve – Bailey Frasch By Kellie Barraza “Land of the free and home of the brave.” Our country takes pride in these few words, so much so that there are brave men and women that risk their lives every day to grant us the luxury of daily freedoms. As a girl, Bailey always knew that her lifelong calling was to serve her country in the armed forces so she based her senior project solely around the careers that serve. Her other two careers were law enforcement and fire fighting. Bailey job shadowed at the Parma, Payette, and Ontario Fire Departments. Also, she shadowed at Caldwell Police Department and the United States Coast Guard Office in Boise, Idaho. Her favorite was the time she spent with the Coast Guard. Bailey got to experience a little bit of what her future would soon look like following graduation. After all of her job shadows, Bailey finally decided to focus on firefighting as her main career. For the physical project portion of her senior project, Bailey decided to take Mrs. Martin’s 1st grade class to the Ontario Fire Dept. to learn about fire safety. When Bailey was a 1st grader, she was given the opportunity to tour a fire department with her class to learn the rules to fire safety. This was a monumental moment in Bailey’s life so she felt like the field trip would impact the lives of the Adrian 1st graders the way it impacted her. “Those kids looked at those fire fighters like they were shiny, new toys. They learned what it meant to be brave and strong and love their job. For a little kid, it wasn’t about teaching them about careers, but teaching them about what it meant to care for others,” says senior Bailey Frasch. Following graduation, Bailey will enlist into the United States Coast Guard. Her hope is to make a career out of this and become the highest ranking officer she can. Bailey also hopes to be a volunteer fire fighter so she can continue to make a difference in her home and community. Bailey has always looked up to the men and women in uniform and she hopes one day that she can be a good example to the young girl or boy who was born to live, and lives to serve.

A Dream is your Creative Vision for your Life

in the Future.
