Valentine’s Day has certainly moved on from the olden days. Whatever happened to all the cards you used to get plastered in inventive rhymes, sonnets, odes to love and sealed with a greasy swathe of lipstick puckered up and delivered by hand via the postman. Old school. Well, primary school in fact. Certainly cards are still exchanged today but perhaps the inventive creativity is from a bygone era? These days the young ones probably just send their Valentines target a text; “I LUVS U M8”. Either way, at the end of the day it’s all about the love. Feel the love. Spread the love. And there’s plenty to go around. This month as we kick January right out of our lives for another while (stinker month that one) we press on into February with all traces of our baubles banished into the roof space. We have plenty for you to fall in love with in this edition as we delve deep into the community, uncovering all the latest bits and pieces for you to ingest, disseminate, mull and ultimately enjoy. From news to vintage finds to local heritage to cookery to financial advice to what’s on, it’s a love potion concocted just for you BCUZ WE LUV YOU M8s! Enjoy.

An £85m energy plant which will create 130 construction jobs has been given the green light

at Bombardier Aerospace in east Belfast. The new facility will turn waste product into power at

the factory which makes wings for the new CSeries jet and will be located next to the company

factory in the city’s Harbour Estate. A further 20 posts will be created when the plant becomes

operational converting 120,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste annually into

electricity and heat using a gasification process which heats waste to produce a gas that is used

to generate steam which in turn drives a turbine creating electricity.

Northern Irelands leading local cancer charity, Action Cancer is forming a new volunteer fundraising group in East Belfast and are looking for potential members. The aim of the group will be to raise money and promote the charity’s range of services in the East Belfast area. ACTION CANCER TO LAUNCH NEW EAST BELFAST FUNDRAISING GROUP

Greens Pizza has one simple philosophy – everything should be Great at Greens. From the food to the service to the relaxed setting, it shouldn’t just be good but great. To kick off 2014, the restaurant has listened to customer comments and decided to add to its current food choice at both the Ballyhackamore and Lisburn Road restaurants. So what have people been asking for? A choice of pizza base to include a thinner base. Great for those who are cutting back on carbs in the new year! People have also asked for a greater choice of pizza sauce. So while most pizzas will have a traditional tomato base, customers can also choose from sweet chilli sauce, BBQ or pesto. And finally the restaurant is introducing three great value pizzas to choose from including seasoned ground beef with red onion; salami, onion and chilli flakes; and Indian spiced vegetables. But if you’re a traditionalist at heart, never fear – all of Greens classic and speciality pizzas are still on the menu, along with the hugely popular Dragon’s Tongue Bread and amazing salads with Greens own dressing. Don’t forget Greens at Ballyhackamore is open for lunch daily with a special £6.95 lunch offer. And for bargain hunters, make sure you check out the Greens Facebook page when a new offer is posted every Monday. For further info visit www.greenspizza.com or facebook.com/greenspizza. To order for pick up, contact the pizza hotline on 9065 0600.

Bloom:News East Belfast MP Naomi Long has launched a

new Polish service in her constituency, giving

people the same access to advice and assist-

ance as other constituents, but in their native

language. The move will include a native Polish

speaker working in Mrs Long’s constituency of-

fice at 56 Upper Newtownards Road, who will

be the first point of contact for those who find

it easier to converse in the Polish language. Mrs Long said the service was a response to the growing diversity

of constituents seeking her help and had been in development over recent months with the assistance of the

Belfast Migrant Centre. “It is important to me that people who move into East Belfast, regardless of where

they have come from, feel part of the community. Access to services such as being able to seek help from your

MP is a vital cornerstone of democracy, one of which more people will now be able to avail. “I already provide

services in a number of languages and formats, drawing in people from all backgrounds, but I felt that due to

the increasing volume of Polish people contacting me, a dedicated Polish-speaking member of staff was a way

to make things more accessible for people from that community. I have been working for a number of months

with the Belfast Migrant Centre and a caseworker is now in place. “Often people have good conversational

English, but find form-filling or official issues more difficult and help in Polish would make life easier. I would

encourage those who would find this useful to contact my office to make an appointment, to ring with queries

on a Thursday afternoon, or to e-mail us their enquiries. Hopefully, it will be a useful addition to the services

which we offer for everyone in the constituency.”

Tesco Stores across the UK took part in the largest multi-site “Cha Cha Slide” dance at 2.30pm on 25th Janu-ary. Locals joined staff at the dance Diabetes event and customers made donations which will go towards the £10 million fundraising target for diabetes UK, Tesco National Charity Partner. Paul Amadi, Director of Fundraising for Diabetes UK, said “We are delighted so many Tesco staff and customers took part in the Dance for Diabetes event. Dancing for 60 minutes can burn up to 350 calories and it’s a fun way to keep active and help maintain a healthy weight, which can in turn reduce a persons risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The money raised will make a real difference to the 3.8 million people with diabetes in the UK and help people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes reduce their risk of the condition” Sam Larkin Store Manager of Tesco Castlereagh said “staff jumped at the chance to take part in the dance for Daibetes Fundraising event. They worked hard to perfect the routine and were pleased customers joined in too. People have been incredibly generous and I’d like to thank them all for donating to what is a very worthwhile cause. www.diabetes.org.uk/Tesco

The next stage of a £2.7million flood alleviation

scheme will begin this month in East Belfast. Agriculture

and Rural Development Minister, Michelle O’Neill also con-

firmed that further flood alleviation works, which includes

upgrading of the sea defences at Sydenham, will commence

this summer as scheduled. These £2.7million works for the

Castlereagh Road, Ladas Way, Grand Parade, Clara Park, and

Montgomery Road areas are part of the wider £11 million

East Belfast Flood Alleviation Scheme which will provide

enhanced protection from sea and river flooding for some

1,700 properties. Major elements of this scheme have been

integrated into the wider Connswater Community Green-

way Project for East Belfast, which will see a new 9km linear

park created, following the course of the Connswater, Knock

and Loop rivers. This latest stage has been awarded to Fox

Building & Civil Engineering Ltd, with construction com-

mencing this month and expected to be complete by the end

of 2015. Phase 1 of the integrated works being undertaken

in Orangefield and Victoria Parks include the construction of

flood walls, flood earth embankments and river realignment

works. The procurement process is currently under way for

Phase II, which includes flood alleviation works to the lower

Connswater River. It is expected that construction will start

in Summer 2014 and be completed by early 2016.

Regional Development Minister Danny

Kennedy has announced the comple-

tion of a £55,000 pedestrian and

cycle toucan puffin crossing on East

Link Road, Dundonald. The decision

to provide a Puffin Toucan Crossing

is based upon criteria relating to the

number of pedestrians and cyclists

crossing the road and the volume of

vehicles using it. This is to ensure that

a crossing located where there is the

greatest demand. Puffin crossings are

relatively new in Northern Ireland.

A green ‘bicycle’ is displayed next

to the ‘green man’ when cyclists and

pedestrians are permitted to cross. Ad-

ditionally, unlike the pelican crossing,

before the lights for vehicles go back

to green, a steady red and amber are

displayed instead of a flashing amber.

“Kip McGrath Education Centres are an extremely successful franchise, established over thirty

years ago. Today there are almost 700 centres operating around the world and I’m proud to say that my

centre is the first in Belfast,” says Jan Annesley who has been tutoring children in maths and English at

the Kip McGrath Education Centre in East Belfast since 2010. “The aim of a Kip centre is to offer chil-

dren aged from six to eighteen, expert tuition in English and Mathematics in a friendly, positive environ-

ment. Each student is given a free assessment, from which a programme of study is created to meet your

child’s needs. We also cater for and support the curriculum taught in the schools of the area we operate

in; so in my centre we offer tuition in KS1 and 2 Literacy and Numeracy, the grammar school entrance

exams and English, English Literature and Mathematics from KS3 to GCSE, to A Level. Each day I offer

four 80 minute sessions with a maximum of four students and remember each one is working on their

own programme of study. So if your child needs support with any educational stage from P2 to A Level,

at any stage in the school year, we can help! Our support is also ongoing – we’re here for as long as your

child needs us.” Contact Jan on 028 9046 9662. 104 Loopland Drive, BT6 9DX. kipmcgrath.co.uk

Orangefield Park has been transformed, as work to

divert the Knock River along a new channel took place

on Tuesday 28th January. The River, which previously

flowed along the edge of the park, adjacent to many

properties that have been affected by flooding in the

past, has been diverted into the heart of the park as

a key component of the flood alleviation element of

an integrated project under way in the area. One of 3

‘Living Landmark’ projects in the UK, the £35 million

Connswater Community Greenway / East Belfast Flood

Alleviation Scheme (CCG/EBFAS) Project is being

developed by the East Belfast Partnership and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Belfast City Council,

the Department for Social Development and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Rivers

Agency. Work in the park began last May 2013, with 40,000 tonnes of soil being moved to create the new

river channel and naturalised flood plain. The permanent diversion of the river, along with other flood

defences, means that there will soon be a high level of flood protection for the properties situated adjacent

to the river, including Orangefield Park, Orangefield Green and Sandhill Park. The new river channel will

become a naturalised habitat relatively quickly, supporting local wildlife and providing a valuable outdoor

classroom facility for local schools and groups. communitygreenway.co.uk

Beverley at the Fair says the concept of the event is to give more people the chance to own better quality

clothing at prices they can afford. “I get great enjoyment and satisfaction in owning something that little bit

special, maybe it is the fabric or the cut of the garment, but just something which makes you feel good. The

idea is to offer top contemporary fashion in nearly new condition. On occasions we have had clothes on the rails

which have never even been worn, with labels still attached and the shopper gets to take advantage of the greatly

reduced prices. Savvy shoppers, conscious of their clothing budget and stylish fashionistas realise that they no

longer have to sacrifice quality to obtain something at a reasonable price when they indulge in luxury recycling.

Not only does the Style Fair benefit those who are buying, but also those who have wardrobes bulging with

clothes they no longer wear for one reason or another. How often do we make mistakes by buying on impulse?

We may be storing clothes which no longer fit, but are just too good to simply discard. There is sometimes guilt

because of the high costs involved but by selling some of your pieces at one of the fairs, you can recoup some cash

and may even add some new purchases by visiting the other stall holders. “We believe everyone wins on the day.

For some, buying preloved clothing may be a way of saving money when there is less to go round, for others it may

be for environmental reasons and about reducing waste, while for others it may be the desire to find something

unique and that little bit different. We understand that some people will always want to shop for the latest designer

trends when they hit the shelves and that some will only ever buy new but we don’t mind, because at some point

that fabulous fashion may reach our fairs,” says Beverley.

“We offer another useful option for sellers...Not everyone has enough clothes to warrant taking a rail at the

events, so The Style Fair will also offer the option of selling on your behalf, when you only have one or two items

to sell. A date is set aside in the venue where the fair is to be held, allowing you to drop off clothing for the Style

Fair assistants to sell. You are also welcome to bring them along on the morning of the fair and our sales staff will

take care of things for you. It is all very straightforward. “

The clothing drop off day is February 9th 12pm-3pm. The fair takes place on the 15th from 11.30

If anyone is interested and needs more information they are asked to contact Beverley via the website. Informa-

tion is also on Facebook. “We want every event to be a fun, good old fashioned shopping experience enjoyed with

friends and we provide changing facilities so you can try before you buy with lots of people around to give honest

opinions on what you are buying. We have regular sellers who just love the craic. The main venue is the delightful

Holywood Old School on Church Road in the town but other events are on the calendar for 2014.”

STYLE FAIRFABULOUSFASHIONFINDS

If I had to give just one piece of advice on how to take better pictures it would be “use a

camera!” This may seem obvious, but the fact is that the size and quality of the lens is the most important factor in determining the quality on an image. The image is made by light reflecting off the subject and passing through the camera lens when the shutter opens. The light then falls on photo-sensitive film (or the CCD in digital cameras). The image is only as good as the amount of light that is let in. There’s no point having a 10M pixel camera if the lens isn’t big enough to let sufficient light in.This is a fairly common issue with phone-cameras. Generally a 3M pixel camera with a proper lens will give better results than a 10M pixel camera-phone. Using a decent lens a 1M pixel image will give an excellent 4”x6” print. A 6M pixel image taken with a decent lens can

20 bloommagazine.co.uk

be printed up to 4ft x 6ft. That’s not to say phone-cameras don’t have their place – we take our phones everywhere so they’re always on hand – just make sure you use maximum quality possible. Lower resolution images look OK on screen & are fine for Facebook – they also use less memory – but if you get a really good picture & come to print it you may be disappointed. Use the highest quality settings available. This will use more memory, but simply back-up and/or print your images more regularly. If you’re serious about getting the perfect shot it’s worth investing in a camera and getting into the habit of carrying it with you - particularly on special occasions. These days compact cameras give excellent results & slip into your pocket. At Dundela Photo Lab we carry a range of compact cameras to suit most tastes & budgets. If you’re

after something a bit higher-end we can source SLRs & accessories at very competitive prices. I’m always delighted to help out with camera queries. I know that show-rooming is a fact of life. That doesn’t mean I’m happy about it, but I’m pretty confident that our prices are extremely competitive. With offers such as 1 free print for every £1 spent on a camera, and accessory bundles including memory card, case and so on, you’ll be pleasantly surprised what we can do for you.And don’t forget, once you’ve captured those special memories, the best way to make them last forever is to get them printed – “to keep it, print it!”Dundela Photo Lab is in-house at Dundela Pharmacy, 17-19 Belmont Road. From 10p each for 6”x4” prints on the 24 hour service – a fast service is also available. If you need any tips or advice pop into Dundela Photo Lab and ask Andrew.

In this edition, our resident photographic expert Andrew Foster continues his series of tips and advice on how to capture the best image

BRONZING

MANICURE

There is nothing better than the feel of

soft skin. Use a salt scrub to remove

any hard skin. Apply in circular

movements on dry skin and shower

off. Finish with a body cream such as

[comfort zone] tranquilty cream.

A bit of colour will make you look healthier and slimmer, so book in for

a Vita Liberata spray tan. Just because its freezing outside doesn’t mean

your skin can’t have a healthy glow. Don’t go overboard as you don’t

want to look like your are a member of the Scouse Wife’s cast !

HAIR REMOVAL

If you’re not a fan of shaving, book in for a wax. Your hair must be approximately

1cm long to achieve the best results. The 3 most popular bikini waxes are regular

wax – sides and top of bikini. Brazilian wax – leaves a small strip and for the

brave – Hollywood wax – everything waxed off.

PEDICURE

Sexy feet are smooth, soft and free of hard skin. Treat yourself to a

luxury pedicure to remove any hard skin, push back and cut cuticles.

Have shellac applied so you can slip your feet back into your shoes with

no smudging. Just because your feet aren’t on show at the start of the

evening doesn’t mean they wont be seen by the end of the night!

EXFOLIATION

Your hands are definitely going to be on show if he

decides to pop the question. Be prepared and book

in for a Shellac manicure. This gel like polish will

not smudge and lasts for 2-3 weeks. Your hands will

instantly be ready to show of that sparkler!!

SECOND HAND LOVE AFFAIR

Ear We Go Ear We Go Ear We Go!

The moral of the story is that you don’t have to have an oligarch’s earnings to

make your other half feel loved! Your local charity shop could have just the

thing to put a Valentine’s Day smile on their face. And here’s one final top tip, pretty packaging always makes a gift

feel more special. I popped some tissue paper into a vintage tin I found for 50p to

show you how these lovely finds could look even more delectable!

Prepare to be Dazzled!

Regular readers will know by now what I’m going to say next!

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be budget-busting. It really is the thought

that counts. With that in mind, I set myself a challenge to see if I could

find a fabulous Valentine’s Day staple - jewellery of course - in the local

charity shops. And wow, did I strike gold in my local Marie Curie shop on

Cregagh Road!

The £1 aurora borealis necklace I found has diamond-like

sparkle without the diamond price tag. Really popular in the

1950s, these radiant vintage beads are having a well-deserved

comeback and will propel any outfit from drab to dazzling.

Aurora borealis necklace, £1.00, Marie Curie shop, Cregagh Road

I also picked up beautiful cloisonné earrings by renowned

maker Fish & Crown for the same price. They are a stunning

mix of black, cream, blue and green enamel, and their floral

detail is a subtle reminder that spring is just around the corner!

And finally, I bought

a selection of pretty

bangles, perfect for adding

the finishing touch to a

little black dress. What an

incredible assortment of

beautiful bling for £3!

Aaron McKinney: “Over the last six months, East Belfast has showing clear signs of market recovery. We are finding that as soon as a property is registered For Sale, we have viewers lined up and offers received in a matter of days. This can be clearly seen from our stats below. We expect this trend to continue well into 2014 and will contribute to house prices increasing for the first time in many years. To date this has had no impact on the rental market, with demand still high for all types of properties, which has lead to an increase in rental prices over the last year.”

local financial advice

If you’re seeking finance for your

business, a business plan is an

essential document to help you

convince lenders and investors

that you should be taken seriously.

Whether you’re new to business

or have been operating for years,

lenders and investors will only risk

their time and money if they are

convinced your business will be

successful and profitable.

A BUSINESS PLAN IS VITAL FOR SECURING FINANCE

A complete, thoughtful business

plan is one of the most valuable

tools in helping you reach your

long-term goals. It gives your busi-

ness direction, defines your objec-

tives, maps out strategies to achieve

your goals and helps you to manage

possible bumps in the road.

A BUSINESS PLAN PROVIDES A ROADMAP FOR SUCCESS

Develop Your Road map to Success with a Business Plan

The planning process helps you

learn about the different forces

and factors that may affect your

business success. If you’re already in

business, it helps you to step back

and look at what’s working and

what you can improve on.

A BUSINESS PLAN GIVES YOU CONTROL OF YOUR BUSINESS

The planning process also helps

you work with your accountant to

minimise taxes through Corporate

Tax, Personal, VAT and PAYE tax

strategies. Writing and researching

for your business plan gives you the

chance to:

•Learn more about your industry,

market and competitors

•Write down exactly where you

are in the market and where you’re

headed

•Identify challenges you may come

across and w ork out strategies to

avoid or overcome them

•Understand your business finances,

including managing cash-flow and

determining your break-even point

•Set specific goals, timeframes for

achieving them and how you’ll

measure performance

•Make sound business decisions

that focus your activities, maximise

your resources and give you a

competitive edge.

A BUSINESS PLAN ALSO HELPS YOU TAX PLAN

A BUSINESS PLAN ALSO HELPS YOU TAX PLANIt’s a living guide that you should

develop as your business grows

and changes. Successful businesses

review and update their business

plan when circumstances change. If

you have a team in your business,

holding brainstorming sessions is

a good way to benefit from their

knowledge - it ensures you’re all

on the same page and that you get

their support.

official Plantation and the

Morrow ancestors probably arrived to

farm the land given to the two Scottish

Lairds Hamilton and Ferguson in the

1600’s. The Morrow family is first

recorded in the Ballyhanwood area in

1730 living in a house called “Lough

View”, still lived in by Morrows today.

William and Agnes had two sons, one

never married and the other married

twice and produced six children

and enough Morrows to populate

the Ballyhanwood area for many

generations to come.

As Presbyterians they suffered under

the penal law system, however the

Morrow family managed to prosper

because of a peculiar tradition called

the “Ulster Custom”, (which meant

that if the landlord demanded his land

back he had to pay the farmer for

improvements he had made) so was

worthwhile for these tenant farmers

to improve their land. By the end

of the 1700’s there were at least 6

Morrow families farming enough land

38 bloommagazine.co.uk

to guarantee the men a vote – a rare

privilege for a tenant farmer who had

to be paying more than 40 shillings in

rent to be eligible.

The Morrows have always been

interested in politics – we know that

Adam Morrow signed the dissenters

petition in 1775 and have no doubt the

family was involved in the intimidation

of Rev Pringle when he fled from

Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church at the

time of the Irish rebellion in 1798.

However, farming was the common

activity and they all would have milked

cows, kept sheep, grown crops and

vegetables. As the family grew, the

different branches became better

known by the houses they inhabited,

Lough View, Rockmount, Avondale, Ben

Vista, Hill House and Streamvale.

The branch of the Morrow Family

who run “Streamvale” actually live at

Hill House. The Streamvale farm was

bought by them about a century ago

and when they decided to diversify

into soft fruit growing in the 1980’s

the name “Streamvale” seemed to fit

better with “Strawberries” and so it

MEMORIES FROM THE FARM

was chosen as the marketing name

for the business. However the real

Streamvale is actually on the Gransha

Road – but the name has definitely

stuck with the public. In 1987 the

Morrow family opened their dairy

farm to public view and the 8th and

9th generation of farmers are still

working both on the farming and public

side of the business. They continue

to graze cows from Ballyhanwood to

Ballymaglaff and produce milk for Dale

Farm. The same cows also produce the

milk that is made into the Streamvale

Farmhouse Ice Cream.

This family farm has seen plantations

and penal laws, hiring fairs and horses,

rebellions, uprisings and world wars

in its centuries of history in north

down. The market town of Belfast

from where they walked cattle

along the Newtownards Road has

gradually grown up right to the edges

of the fields. Written records and

remembered tales make for a living

history that still is developing today.

Judith Morrow takes us through her extraordinary family history on the site of Streamvale Farm and how it developed into what it is today as a cornerstone of the community. You can see Judith do a talk on this very subject at The East Belfast Historical Society on 13th February ebhs.org.uk
