MFBN also looks outside of the network to identify counties with underserved populations. Counties in need are identified using a metric created by Feeding America, the national hunger organization. The measure, called “Pounds per Person in Poverty”, or PPIP, uses an equation that calculates the amount of food poundage distributed in a county, per person living below the poverty line. Feeding America uses this metric to identify Gap Counties, or counties that are not reaching a certain PPIP. MFBN is currently working to reach these Gap Counties with two programs, the Mobile Food Pantry and Mail-a-Meal programs. Mobile Food Pantry: Some of you may remember Mobile Food Pantry from a few years ago. We are bringing the program back with some new improvements. Through the Mobile Food Pantry program, food is brought by a semi-truck directly to a community and distributed right off the truck. We hope to create recurring routes to be able to sustainably serve the same community a few times a year. Mail-a-Meal: The mission of the Mail-a-Meal Program is to reach food insecure Montanans in rural, remote, low population areas without access to emergency food assistance or fresh, quality food. Through the program, boxes are shipped from MFBN to a centralized location for distribution to the identified families. We hope that these programs will be beneficial tools helping to combat hunger in these rural and remote areas. If you would like to know more about Gap Counties, whether or not you are a Gap County, or how to help a Gap County, please contact us! Farm Bill Passes CongressAfter clearing the House last week, the Senate

also passed the new Farm Bill in a 68 to 32 vote on Tuesday. The bill now heads to President Obama for his signature. Senator Baucus, Senator Tester, and Congressman Daines all voted for the bill, which sets funding and policy for numerous farm and nutrition programs including SNAP.

Though less than the $40 billion in cuts proposed in the original House version of the bill, the final bill includes nearly $8.6 billion in SNAP cuts, which will have a devastating impact on approximately 850,000 households. These households will see a decrease in their benefit amount by an average of $90/month; a decrease that will be especially damaging following the cuts experienced by all SNAP households November 1, 2013. The cuts will almost certainly result in increased demand at emergency food agencies at a time when these agencies are already struggling to keep up with record levels of need.

We commend all of our partners who called, emailed, and contacted our Congressional leaders to protect SNAP throughout this long process. While we are disappointed that the bill does contain cuts to SNAP, we successfully avoided the most drastic and damaging proposals included in the original version of the House bill.

Applesauce Baking SubstitutesUsing featured products I6734, I6737, and I6738

Applesauce is an easy way to add some nutrition to your fa-vorite baking recipes. Apple-sauce can be used as a substi-tute for oil or eggs in bread or cake recipes. When using as a substitute for oil a 1:1 ratio is recommended. When using as a substitute for eggs, 1/4 cup of sauce and 1 tsp of baking powder is equivalent to one egg. It is not recommended using applesauce as a substitute for butter. For example, using applesauce rather than butter in a cookie recipe may lead to a cake-like cookie. If using a sweetened applesauce, try reduc-ing the amount of sugar in the recipe. Happy baking!

If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love.
