Georgian Manganese Intends to Make 2014 ‘A Year of Environment Protection’

Consequently, this year, the Company intends to pay special attention to the protection of environment and ecology. A number of ecology-protection actions are planned, including technological moderni-zation of enterprises that belong to Georgian Manganese. Namely, the Company plans to install modern systems of monitoring new filters and air quality. Starting up of a new manganese processing enterprise is planned in Chiatura; at the same time, the process of recultivation of exhausted quarries will be resumed. This an incomplete list of projects, planned by the investor company.

We talked with Sopio Berishvili, Direc-tor of Environment Protection, Healthcare and Safety of Georgian Manganese, about the plans of protecting the environment and ecology.

On the New Year’s Eve, Mr. Velvel Lozinskiy, Director of Georgian Manganese, met with 12 young artists, winners of the project ‘My Dream Plant. The objective of the meeting was to get acquainted with the authors of the best works and to motivate them for further achievements.

The device, which can automati-cally move in the desired direction, functions via special remote control unit. By employing striking maneu-vers and inertia, it can drill, open or close the furnace outlet.

This feature makes the cutting de-vice unique. The workers, who had to

perform these manipulations manua-lly, using a steel pipe, are especially grateful for the innovation. Besides saving the physical energy of laborers and making the work at the furnace absolutely safe, the new device saves the working time as well.

Naturally, prior to setting up of furnace-cutter device, it was ne-cessary to carry out the preparation work. Special area with rails was prepared and taking account of its standards, the furnace-cutter was mounted on it.

Before that, reconstruction of furnace # 2 went on according to the 3-month schedule. They dismantled the framework and foundations; af-ter that, the same work was done in the reversed order. Additionally,

they reconstructed the mass site and upper sections of the furnace. In its extreme part, they built a volu-minous bunker, where the smelters can transfer the mass by the cart through the curtailed gully.

In these works were engaged lo-cal and subsidiary manpower and

machinery: building and mainte-nance workshop, Technological service of enterprise, the Plant’s lease holding company ‘Imereti 2000’ and naturally, engineers, te-chnicians and workers of workshop # 1.

With these reconstruction efforts in workshop # 1, the projects of re-novation of production sites were completed. In the words of Zaza Abesadze, Assistant Chief of work-shop, for the next 3 years, no inves-tment will be required for the over-haul of furnaces, since they have a long service life ahead. Meanwhile, the management of the Plant is re-ady to realize other plans of develo-ping of the workshop.

Rusudan Abashidze

It has a solid reason – the said furnace stands out thanks to the in-novation equipment, which is ca-lled a furnace-cutter mechanism. At the Ferroalloy Plant, it is viewed as another embodiment of technical progress.

There is no analog to the fur-nace-cutter device either in the enterprise or in the entire country. Leaders of the owner Company of Georgian Manganese heeded the experience of Ferroalloy Plant of Nikopol and initiated to use the fur-

Not long ago, in the wake of its test start-up, newly reconstructed smelting furnace # 2 of workshop # 1 produced its first alloy. There is nothing unusual in this event, since after reconstruction, all furnaces turn out appropriate products. But still, furnace # 2 enjoys a diffe-rent status.

nace-cutter at the Ferroalloy Plant of Zestaponi. These persons un-derstood the positive effect, which this mechanism would have on the

production process. Subsequently, Georgian-American Alloys purcha-sed the equipment on the People’s Republic of China.

Every month, this workshop produces up to 50 tons of electrode coatings; workshop # 1 uses about 10 tons of its produce and work-shop # 4 consumes the rest of it. It means that the Plant burns 50 tons of sheet iron.

Coating is as important for pro-ducing the end product as the fur-nace itself. It has the function of an electrode, that is, of an electric conductor.

Jaba Berekashvili, chief of the workshop says that besides supplying the key workshops, the electrode coating workshop gets spe-cial orders; it manufactures other additional products as well.

In the course of time, the electro-de coating workshop used to change its image. Initially, when it was set up as a site of metal tare, due to the low capacity, it worked in a less in-tensive mode. At different times, it used to form the part of this or that workshop. Later, when it expanded and acquired an independent status, the volume of its production increa-sed significantly.

At present, there is an opposi-te picture at the electrode coating workshop: it has took in the storage of scrap metal and nonferrous me-tal, which contains about 90 tons of nonferrous metal tare by way of se-condary product. The tare is stored with the aim of reprocessing and reusing it. It is the important part of

the Plant’s non-stop working regi-me.

Thereby, work is in full swing at this site of the Ferroalloy Plant; accordingly, the people, who work there, have no spare time. Natura-lly, the chief of the workshop is no exception from the rule. Avowedly, Mr. Jaba Berekashvili is a living history of the past and present of the said workshop.

In 1990s, on Mr. Jaba’s initia-tive, the management of the Plant realized the project, which envisa-ged integration of two working si-tes – casting workshop and the site of metal tare – and on their basis, a workshop of electrode coating was created. In the words of Mr. Jaba, the chief consultant of his proposal was Vasil Zibzibadze, chief mecha-nical engineer of the Plant at that time.

As of last August, by the order of Company’s Director General and according to the resolution of the Plant, the workshop acquired its ini-

tial image: it took in the scrap me-tal site together with its manpower, which was augmented by a cutting torch operator.

On its part, the scrap metal site is divided into ferrous and nonfe-rrous metal storages; however, it is another story, which would take more time and more newspaper spa-ce. Producing electrode coating is the most important job in the work-shop and manufacturers of coating

or ‘caldron-men’, as they are called, have the highest salaries.

Makers of sheet steel coatings can give you the most qualified information about the varieties of coating. These people, who opera-te huge iron-cutting, pressing and roll-up machines, will tell you that there are 2mm, 3mm and 4mm coa-tings, depending on the order and demand. Their chief adds that the-re are other criteria that should be taken into consideration, when 300 coatings are produced daily.

Naturally, Mr. Jaba, an expe-rienced expert of his job, cannot be wrong. Making coatings is a complicated and highly responsible

task. By the way, Mr. Jaba confided his wish to me: he would like to complete his professional activity at his native enterprise with two figure ‘fours’ – when his working experien-ce reaches 44 years. His retirement date will arrive after 8 months, that is, in November of 2016. Strange as it seems, this wish stimulates him to doing his job perfectly.

Rusudan Abashidze

At the first stage, they had to prepa-re the bunkers for keeping the end pro-duct. The bunkers have been recently embedded in concrete on the territory, adjoining the storehouse. Two bunkers with the capacity of 600 cubic meters can accommodate about 12 000 tons of end product that is ready to be shipped to the customer. Expansion of the sto-

rehouse territory will allow the relative section to keep the ready product.

At the first stage, the bunkers will have no covers. As Vaso Gvelesiani, chief engineer of the enterprise says, time will show, whether there will be a need to cover the bunkers. This topic is still under consideration at the enterpri-se.

As per the project that has been ela-borated by the Design Service of the Plant, it is mandatory to expend the section by 60 meters. The project was unanimously supported by the leaders of the Company, since it provided for the accommodation of the ready pro-duct. Thereby, the nearest future of the Ferroalloy Plant promises further in-frastructural build-up of its storehouse.

Another project of rehabilitation of the storehouse of the end product, is awaiting its endorsement: mounting of the unit for sorting of the sift will enable

the enterprise to sort out 0-10mm frac-tion into 0-3mm and 0-10mm fractions. Launching of the sift sorting unit will enhance the development of the end product storehouse of the Plant; it will contribute to the single storehouse as well as to the entire Plant. At the same time, engineers and technicians highly appreciate the big-bag loading device, which was assembled at the storehouse because thanks to this devices, the re-quired amount and tonnage of big-bags are automatically loaded and placed in the containers in due time.

At one of the session of the Company’s leadership, the firm’s managers appro-ved the target plan of rehabilitation of the storehouse of Ferroalloy Plant’s end product. At the session, the administration of the Plant gave instructions to corres-ponding services to organize the work according to the project and the drawn-up program.

– We were told that the manage-ment of Georgian Manganese has de-clared that this year will be ‘a year of care for environment’. What actions do you plan to undertake within the framework of this campaign?

– We are moving in two directions. As you know, we own a Ferroalloy Plant in Zestaponi and an Ore-Dressing and Processing Plant in Chiatura. Therefore, our plans envisage improvement of eco-logic situation in these two towns.

In Zestaponi, we will pay attention to the condition of air, while in Chiatura, we intend to take care of the Kvirila Ri-ver. At the same time, we will continue the process of recultivation of quarries. Georgian Manganese plans to install modern systems of monitoring the qua-lity of atmosphere. We aim to purcha-se 4 devices and install them; they will

monitor the gases, dust and other com-ponents, discharged into the atmosphe-re. Thanks to these machinery, together with the Ministry of Environment Pro-tection, we shall get the data on the con-dition of the air in Zestaponi in online

regime, which will enable to determine, whether this or that component in the air, corresponds the accepted standards. At the same time, we plan to renew filters at the Ferroalloy Plant in Zestaponi and modernize the technological processes of the enterprise. We have taken certain steps in that direction. For instance, we have bought special vacuum cleaner, which bars spreading of dust on the te-rritory of the Plant. Of course, renova-tion of the enterprise and installation of new equipment will be more effective; it will help us minimize the pollution of environment. We plan to install new mo-

nitoring equipment by this summer. We will do our best to improve the ecology considerably in 2014.

– Have you chosen the places, whe-re you will install the air monitoring systems? Do you monitor the air at present?

– We have not specified the exact places of installing the devices. We will

set them up them on the territory, agreed with the Ministry of Environment Pro-tection. Naturally, even today, we regu-larly monitor the quality of the air. We take samples, check them at the labora-tory and then send them to the Ministry every week. New equipment will facili-tate this process. It is a modern techno-logy, which will enable us to provide the

Company Georgian Manganese declared that 2014 would be a ‘Green Year’. Consequently, this year, the Company intends to pay special attention to the protection of environment and ecology. Sporting Achievements of Twin SistersMinistry with the online information on the condition of the air in Zestaponi. I would like to stress that lately, the situa-tion in respect of ecology has improved considerably and degree of air pollution just about matches the accepted stan-dards.

– What can be done in Chiatura to prevent the pollution of the Kvirila Ri-ver?

– We have big-scale projects regar-ding Chiatura. We are actively engaged in setting up of a new ore-dressing and processing enterprise in that town. The plant, which Georgian Manganese in-tends to acquire, has the closed system of water circulation; practically, industrial water won’t be discharged into the Kvi-rila River and the part of it that will be discharged into the river, will be filtered and cleansed. Purchase and assembly of that plant is expected in the nearest fu-ture. However, apart from buying and setting up of the plant, we will need to get appropriate sanctions, work out the estimation of enterprise’s influence on environment and obtain the permit for its functioning. We have calculated that

these procedures will take entire 2014. On the other hand, this plant will solve the pro-blem of pollution of the Kvirila River.

– Besides, as we are informed, the process of recultivation continues. What is the area that you plan to cul-tivated in spring?

– Yes, we are engaged in the reculti-vation process. We began it last year and we have planted saplings on the place of 8 used-up open-cast mines. In spring, we intend to plant trees on the territory of 2 – 8 hectares. All in all, our Company has to recultivate 90 hectare of territory. We are cooperating with the Ministry of En-vironment Protection in this regard too. We have submitted the plans of reculti-vating of those 8 mines. We are happy that the Ministry and the Company take account of each other’s opinions.

As for the type of trees that are used during recultivation, the invited specia-lists chose the sort of trees, which will fit the landscape and take root easily. We hope to recultivate 10 hectares of land annually.

Nino Tabatadze

Paata Khutunashvili, shift super-visor of Itkhvisi mine and industrial nurse Eka Khakhishvili are parents of twin girls, Nino and Mariam. The twins are the sixth grade stu-dents of intensive English-language lycee school in Chiatura. When the girls turned 8, their parents signed them up to train in swimming, since Chiatura has an excellent sporting swimming pool. Much to the surpri-se of their parents, the girls showed an interest and a skill in this attrac-tive kind of sport. In several months, they made their first progress.

Coach Valeri Tskhadadze told their parents that the girls had a particular gift for swimming and they needed intensive training. Thereafter, doing sports beca-me a way of life of Nino and Mariam; the swimming pool turned into their se-cond family, where they enjoy salubrity and prepare for sporting competitions. And on top of everything, in the swim-ming pool, the twins are like ducks to water.

At present, the girls are 11years old. During the last 3 years, the twins have participated almost in all countrywide competitions and have won the prizes. Their family, students and teachers of their lycee school and other fans take pri-

de in their medals, diplomas and letters of commendation.

In general, achievements of the Chi-atura sporting school are connected to the fact that municipal Gamgeoba of Chiatura actively encourages the young people, who take to sports. Apart from awarding them with promotional certifi-cates and prizes, it gives them a purse. Besides, it also finances the expenses, connected with their training.

At present, the twins undergo trai-ning to participate in upcoming Olym-pic Games, which will take place in 2015.

– Mr. Akaki, the second half of last year was not very successful in terms of fulfilling the plans of your enter-prise. Will the last year’s unfulfilled tasks move to this year and trouble you? Will these circumstances affect the plans for 2014? As they say, over-coming problems in the field of mining engineering is not an easy job.

– Actually, last year, we faced down-fall. However, thanks to the efforts of the owners of the Holding, it did not affect the salaries and bonuses of our emplo-yees. Despite the fact that drawbacks in mining engineering causes chain reac-tions, the tasks envisaged by the program of 2014, will be implemented at an usual tempo; moreover, delivery of under-ground equipment will go on without delay, which will allow to go ahead in terms of fulfilling the plan. Our expe-rience dictates to us that every employee should be paid according to the work, he has carried out. The new machinery will

be conducive to beating the target, which will, consequently, increase the salary of our employees.

– The miners were not satisfied with the loading machines that were purchased last year. Do you plan to bring in the analogous equipment?

– As a matter of fact, from the very be-ginning, we explained to our employees that the novelty requires consideration; it needs getting accustomed with it. We engaged technicians to fit the loading ma-chines to the perimeters of mines, since it turned out to be the main problem. After we became proficient in the functioning

of loading machines, everything clicked into place. As for the new loaders, they will be absolutely different, with much higher efficiency.

– What is the key factor that deters the efficient running of the enterprise? Do you intend to introduce changes connected with the qualification of em-ployees?

– At present, the bottleneck of the Chiatura Ore-Dressing and Processing Complex is the process of ore dressing. As you know, the ore dressing plants are worn out. Apart from planned mainte-nance, often they require emergency re-pair, which impairs technological proces-ses, affects the quality of end product and harms fulfillment of plans.

We are already preparing foundation of dressing line according to the appro-ved project. Implantation of the new equipment implies not only fulfillment but over-fulfillment of plans as well; and in line with the new decision, salaries

shall be reimbursed according to the vo-lume of fulfilled plan.

We don’t intend to increase the plan at this stage because currently we are trying out the new equipment. It is important to equip mines with new machinery and tools to eliminate the problems of loading machines, drilling machines, electric lo-comotives, carriages, etc., as we elimina-ted the lack of interior packing and certain turnover means. Soon, we will comple-tely substitute drilling machines. We have brought in several of drilling machines of superior quality; by the end of February, we will be doing it serially. For them we

won’t use the spirals manufactured at our workshop; we will bring in the spirals of better quality. At all worksites, we shall create conditions for interference-free realization of the plan, which will enable our employees to fulfill the quota.

As for the qualification, there is no doubt about the high level of qualification of our engineers, technicians and wor-kers. As I have said earlier, the problems, connected with fulfillment of the plan and keeping high quality of end product, are caused by the plants of dressing the uti-lized ore. Thanks to the substitution of out-dated machines at underground and quarry operations by new ones, we have moved to a different phase of work. The same should be done with ore dressing sites. Actually, we have to assemble new lines there. At the same time, we have no problem linked to ore extraction. The only hitch is a geologic prospecting in the quarry fields. By the end of February, that problem will be also done away with – we are introducing the drilling equipment that will facilitate deposit pros-pecting and, consequently, opening of ore-rich mines.

At this point, we have no problem in the supply sphere. The point is that the price for metal went down on the inter-national market. Well, it happens some-times… However, we hope that they will go up eventually. We need it because it will enable the owner of the Holding to invest more and acquire bigger working assets. The most important point is that our new year began with hiring new co-hort of tunnel drivers, drill-operators and motormen. It promises successful alter-nation of generations.

– What can you say about the reor-ganization?

– Let me say a few words about the principle of managing our ore deposit. The deposit has an open-cast mine and a plant; chief of mine is accountable for all services that make up the entire

At the turn of the year, all companies are busy, analyzing their achievements and drawbacks and, taking account of acquired experience, they plan new successful moves.

For the Ore-Dressing and Processing Complex of Chiatu-ra, every year of the last decade was important. Lot of develop-ments have taken place during that period – the miners, who had left their homes in search of jobs, returned to their fami-lies and working places. These years rayed life into the famous manganese basin of Chiatura redeemed its forfeit fame. This decade bucked up and vivified the streets of Chiatura. Today, the town wakes up early; noise of battered mine-bound buses fills the surroundings, while at midnight, when the second shift is over, the same buses disturb the silence of sleeping town. Noise, black waters of the river, surroundings of the ore-dressing plants that turn into the black batter during preci-pitations – cause indignation of local residents. Despite the fact that the last10 years revived Chiatura and turned it into the town that is working again, as it did before, still, 2014 promises to turn the situation by means of improving and upgrading the ecology of the territories, adjoi-ning the mining enterprises by 180 degrees.

We cannot say that the last year was not very successful in this regard. According to the decision of Company Georgian-American Alloys, owner of Holding Georgian Manganese, significant improvements have been introduced in the sphere of technical refurbishing of mines and enhancing the social conditions of employees. As we have reiterated earlier, mining industry is a complicated field of economy, where problems crop up spontaneously. And last year was no exception from the rule.

Mr. AKAKI GURJIDZE, Director of Ore-Dressing and Processing Complex of Chiatu-ra, talked about last year’s mi-lestones and current tasks that are set before the enterprise.

The mine will be responsible for underground work, the plants will take care of ore dressing and the quarry sector will be accountable for open-cast mine

7compound. Soon all these components will get differentiated. The mine will be responsible for underground work, the plants will take care of ore dressing and the quarry sector will be accountable for open-cast mine. Its incorrect, when the chief of mine is made responsible for everything. By the new layout, each sector will have its separate plan and cost-effectiveness will be achieved.

– Naturally, it will affect the sala-ries too…

– If it does; it will be done it in a po-sitive way because as I said, we intend to boost ore extraction.

– Mr. Akaki, if I am not mistaken, there was a talk about introducing a 12-hour rate of non-stop work cycle.

– You are right; it is under discussion and consultations are going on about that issue. We will choose either Mgvimevi or Shukruti mine or both of them and intro-duce the new routine. It will be a closed-type enterprise whit no admittance except on business. Its employees will work under best conditions; they will have no need to leave the territory, adjoining the mine. There, they will have a hostel, fur-nished with modern amenities, canteen, fitness hall, facilities for active physical and intellectual life, 4 meals a day, etc. It will be a 15-day cycle. We shall see how successfully we will accomplish the new routine. Above all, it depends on the em-ployees themselves whether they accept the terms, which we will offer them.

As you are aware, 2014-2015 are the years are earmarked as the period of change in the house rules of the Holding as regards improvement of ecological situation and in-crease of efficiency. We also intend to boost underground work by 30%.

The New Year Spirit!HOLIDAY

The kids also met with the actors of Studio-Theater ‘Multi-Pulti’, who were especially invited from Tbilisi to present to them the plays based on the adventures of well-known characters of animation and children’s films.

With bated breath, the kids watched Shrek, Spider-man, Snow Queen, Mickey Mouse and naturally, Santa Claus from the faraway Lapland.

In addition to enjoying the fairytale plays, the little spectators were amazed by the astonishing performance of magician Rostom Kavelashvili.

The children received candies and sweets as gifts on behalf of the Company management.

These proceedings were a traditional integral part of the New Year’s Eve traditions of Georgian Manganese, who organizes such festive events for all children of its personnel. As usual, almost one thousand kinds partici-pated in this year’s celebration.

Another essential part of the New Year’s Eve pro-gram was the gathering of the employees of Ferroalloy Plant in the assembly hall of main administrative buil-ding, where the leaders of the enterprise congratulated the staff of the Plant with the upcoming New Year and wished them success and happiness.

On the initiative of Vasily Garega, director of the Fe-rroalloy Plant, 270 successful employees of the enterpri-se were awarded keepsakes.

Rusudan Abashidze

On the initiative of the staff of the Public Relations Service of Georgian Manganese, the New Year’s Eve festive events were arranged for the youngest members of the families of Company’s employees. The kids were offered the opportunity to attend several special festive matinee shows of children’s plays – ‘Komble’ and The Naked King’ – that were performed by the companies of Dra-ma Theaters of Chiatura and Zestaponi.

Utilization of big-bag loading devi-ces have been tested and approved pre-viously at the Ferroalloys Plant: similar mechanism functioned in Workshop # 1, at the warehouse of ready products. Besides, it is widely used at other ana-logous enterprises elsewhere. Thanks to the efforts of the authors of this idea, the device was successfully tested and approved at the end product storehouse of Ferroalloys Plant.

Viacheslav Yanaev, chief engineer of technical development of the Plant, was the author of the project of loading device. He realized the project in the shortest possible time. He personally supervised the work connected with the implementation of the project and took part in working out its details.

Principle of operation of big-bag loading device is automatic; it performs several operations stage-by-stage. The traverse, which is fixed to the frame of the device, can hold 3 big-bags at a time and by means of strain-gauge balance, needed amount of silicomanganese is loaded into them. When the procedure is over, the cart removes the traverse from the bunker; electric bridge-crane empties it and returns it to the frame. After that, the procedure is performed again.

Apart from facilitating manual la-bor, the device loads big-bags on time and enhances the tempo of work at the end-product storehouse.

The project has been implemen-ted thanks to the efforts of the work-shop of maintenance of metallurgic equipment, specialists of the services of maintenance of repair and power equipment, engineers and technicians

of the Plant and naturally, Vasil Ge-rega, director of the enterprise, who officially inaugurated the modernized section of the Plant.

Mr. Velvel praised the works of little painters, thanked them for taking part in the project and presented them with va-luable gifts. The kids’ drawings evinced that they have successfully analyzed the task connected with the subject matter of the project and displayed their skills in their works. Their state of mind was ma-nifested in every detail of their drawings; frequently, the images of ‘My Dream Plant’ went beyond the scope of childish logic and acquired universal dimensions. That’s what some members of the project commission said.

Taking these assessments into consi-deration and urged by his personal inter-est, Mr. Velvel Lozinskiy expressed the initiative to meet with the little artists and award them individually.

The kids, who participated in the com-petition, were the children of the Com-pany employees – smelters and miners; they live in the families, where they hear everyday discussions about the peripetias of their parents’ working place. Therefore,

it proved to be an easy job for the little ar-tists to draw their dream plant. In addition to the stories, which they hear from their parents, they turned on their imagination and came up with uncommonly impressi-ve pieces of work.

The Director of the Company presented them with the tools and materials that will be very useful in their future artistic work.

Who knows, some of them may be-come a famous painter. When they reach the peak of their fame, they may recall the kind people from their parents’ Plant, who gifted them with colorful gouache, watercolor and acrylic paints, drawing sheets, color pencils and other presents; the people, who gave them the motivation to take the first steps along an uneasy and beautiful road to the world of painting.

Today, 12 best drawings of these kids adorn the pages of the corporate calendar of Georgian Manganese, which is hanging at the workplace of Company’s employees.
