Knowledge opportunities abound at CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014

Comprehensive education programs at CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 will help attendees

conveniently sharpen their professional skills and improve their businesses’ efficiency and productivity, all vital to stay competitive in the marketplace.

Industry experts will share the latest operational techniques and management strategies, with sessions offered at varying times throughout the shows for attendees to maximize their time onsite.

The co-located CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE expositions will be held March 4-8, 2014 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, USA; they are the global gathering place every three years for the construction, construction materials and fluid power/power trans-mission/motion control industries.

Go online to register for the shows and education at www.conexpoconagg.com and www.ifpe.com.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 Education – 10 Targeted Tracks

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 education offers 120 sessions across 10 tracks to target the full range of attendee interests, including equipment management and maintenance, safety & regulations, recycling & preservation, earthmoving & site development, business manage-ment best practices, and workforce development, plus aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and cranes & rigging.

A new education ticket plan allows more flexibility for attendees to choose sessions onsite.

IFPE 2014 Education – Application-Based and Research-Based

IFPE 2014 education provides both application-based and research-driven sessions, targeted to several levels of expertise and interest, with the latest information crucial for engineers and others involved in the design and manufacturing processes.

The IFPE Technical Conference features the latest research developments in the fluid power industry. The emphasis is new technologies and methods related to improved analysis, design, manufac-ture and performance of fluid power components and systems for mobile and industrial markets. Special keynote presentations are included. One registration allows access to more than 80 presentations and the keynotes and

includes a flash drive with conference Proceedings. Certificates for PDH or CEUs are available.

IFPE “College-Level Courses” are half-day sessions focused on hands-on technical knowledge on fluid power and hydraulics, with four to be offered: overview of fluid power systems, sizing a hydrostatic transmission using calcula-tions, condition monitoring of hydraulic

fluids, and design of hybrid systems. Receive discounted pricing when taking more than one course.

A new Fluid Power Seminar Series is free to all attendees and will present practical information to help them better understand the operation of hydraulic and pneumatic components, circuits, and systems. Eight sessions will be offered, including best practices in mobile hydraulic

maintenance, reducing leakage and its environment impact, contamination management in hydraulic systems, electronic control of mobile hydraulics, and trouble-shooting excavators, loader backhoes and aerial lifts. The series is presented by Hydraulics & Pneumatics magazine.

The purpose of this article is to inform employers that youth employment regulations (29CFR570)

promulgated under the Fair Labor Standards Act, prohibits most employees under the age of 18 years from operating forklifts for non-agricultural operations.

Employers must be reminded that all forklift operators who are 18 years old or older must be trained and the employer must certify that their operators are competent to operate forklifts. Employers must identify, obtain and apply additional resources to ensure a safe and healthful workplace for all workers on a consistent daily basis.

Regulations promulgated pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act prohibit individuals younger than 18 years of age from engaging in specified hazardous occupational activities. 29CFR570.58- Occupations involved in the operations of power-driven hoisting apparatus (Order 7), paragraph (a)(5), specifically prohibits employees under 18 years of age from operating forklifts in non-agricultural employment.

In 2002, the Wage and Hour Division of the Employment Standards Administration initiated a “Stop” sticker program. As

part of the that program, WHD developed a sticker that can be applied to forklifts to provide a warning regarding prohibition against workers under 18 years of age operating a forklift.

Employers have the responsibility to comply with the 29CFR1910.178 in order to ensure the safe operation of powered industrial trucks at their facility. In addition, since Order 7 of Hazardous Occupations prohibits employees under 18 years of age from operating forklifts, employers must make certain that workers under 18 years of age are not permitted to operate forklifts under any circumstances. Employers who employ individuals younger than 18 years of age also must be cognizant of other employment activities prohibited for young workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employers, educators, parents and young workers all are encouraged to visit the DOL and OSHA web pages for additional informa-tion on creating and maintaining compliant, safe and healthful work environments. Please refer to the following websites for additional information: www.dol.gov or www.youthrules.dol.gov

When Is Enough Just About Enough?By: Micheal Creamer

W hen is enough just about enough? That is, when can you determine to replace your machine? Is it when your budget on repair parts have

doubled or tripled? This, of course, could be one factor. Could it be the age of the sweeper? Yes, it could. Or, how about the hour meter reading? This is a tell-tale sign of usage.

Let’s delve into these ideas and explore when to replace.

#1 Budget. Of course your budget has to be one of these determining factors in regards to the replace-ment question. For example, say your budget is $500.00 per month or $6,000.00 per year for repair parts. General maintenance could be items such as tires, tune-up items and fluids, such as hydraulic or motor oil. These are all items in the budget. The items not included would be the sweeper brushes, because these have to be replaced on a regular basis anyway and should have their own set budget.

However, when your repair parts budget increase to, say, $2,000.00 in any given month then you may have a problem.

#2 Age. Replacing your sweeper strictly because of age, I think, has never been a good idea. If you are replacing your machine about every three years, that could actually be foolish.

If a machine has been well maintained through the years, there is no reason why one could not get 5 to 7 or perhaps 10 years.

#3 Hour Meter Reading. Although, I think 10 years is a stretch for many companies, the 5 to 7 year range can be in many instances a very practical way to conserve your cleaning budget. With these items being said, I think the underlying factor is the hour meter reading.

I will give you a couple of examples of the “why” this is important. If, for example, you buy a new sweeper with this knowledge in mind, your entire budget, maintenance and approach should be arranged around the hour meter reading.

I have companies replace their sweeper every three years no matter what their situation. It may only have 800 hours on it. This is absolutely low hours.

My personal ratio over the years with many conversa-tions with many people is for every hour it is equal to 62.5 miles (1 hour = 62.5 miles). Many may disagree, that’s fine. So the 800 hours I mentioned above would be equal to about 50,000 miles.

The most important I should talk about is maintaining your equipment. If one doesn’t maintain the equipment

then we should not even be discussing life of your machine because it will be a relativity short time.

Over the years I have seen sweepers with 1,000 hours on it and have seen very nice machines with 2,000 hours. Which leads me back to the most important point, which is strictly maintaining your machine by the OEM hour meter chart. If you are changing the oil every 50 hours or if you are replacing the hydraulic filter every 100 hours then you are going to have your machine for a very long time. Four thousand (4,000) hours should be a reasonable goal.

If you have a machine without an hour meter maintenance chart, e-mail me. I probably can help. By the way, the most hours I have seen on a sweeper are 8,000 hours.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this article please do not hesitate to contact me.

As always, thanks for reading. You can e-mail me a [email protected]

O ne of the largest challenges of the engine remanufacturing business is often associated with

improper engine installation. We all know that everyone reads all of the literature that comes with each reman engine – right? Even after reading all of the paperwork technicians still seem to find creative ways to damage the engines performance and longevity. Enough humor – this article will discuss basic diesel engine installation and how you can prevent premature engine failures.

Imagine the most beautiful remanufac-tured diesel engine that you have ever seen arrive at your dock in a crate that is packaged to perfection. A technician unwraps the engine and sets it on the ground that is covered in oil dry. He takes the gasket box and sets it on an oily workbench where he was just machining a steer axle. So much excite-ment – he gets the intake manifold that was laying next to the glass bead machine and gets ready to prep the engine for install. The old oil and fuel filters were just replaced on a PM fifteen hours before the engine failed so the technician decides to re-use them. It’s a shame to throw them away they still have life left in them. All that’s left is the can of dirty off-road diesel that will be poured into the fuel tank with a funnel that was laying on the floor covered with oil dry. She’s ready to fire! Hopefully you understand the shop humor - but sometimes this is not far from the truth. Here is a list of critical installation points. Remember that this is a list of basics and intended to be used as a guide.

• Check for freight damages and get setup in a clean area with the engine specifications supplied by your remanufacturer.• Check to ensure that the engine’s application is correct prior to bolting on accessories. Bolt patterns on the block and crankshaft flange, crank shaft snout, PTO setup, oil galley and freeze plugs, oil pan configuration, etc.• Clean both manifolds and check for cracks and warpage when applicable. Do not overtorque. Do not glass bead!• Clean and flush the fuel filer housing and lines. Dirty fuel/components can instantly clog the fuel injectors and cause black smoke on startup.• Check fuel lines from tank to pump for cracks or crimps.• Check transfer or lift pump for proper pressure if not supplied by your remanufacturer.• Replace all air, fuel, oil and crankcase filters.

• Clean the air filter housing and hoses. Check for cracks and for proper sealing of the air filter.• Flush or replace the oil cooler if applicable. Ideally you should replace the oil cooler because it is difficult to be sure that all oil contaminates are removed.• Recore or replace the radiator and test.• Replace the oil pressure sending unit.• Adjust the clutch to the proper free pedal before starting. • Check the crankshaft end play before and after installing the transmission. o It is up to the technician to prevent thrust bearing failures. Excessive main bearing thrust wear can be caused by the following: • Clutch not adjusted properly • Pilot shaft or torque converter interference with the crankshaft • Blockage and/or restriction of the transmission oil cooler• Replace the belts, hoses and motor mounts.• Service and inspect the starter, alternator, etc.• Install and properly torque flywheel bolts. Over torquing can distort the crankshaft flange on one piece rear main seal designs. Do not use an impact.• Upon startup NEVER use engine starting fluid. Check oil pressure and coolant flow in the radiator. If oil pressure is not found in ten seconds of startup stop the engine and inspect the oiling system.• Prior to starting the engine - follow the procedures outlined in the engine’s service manual to prime the fuel system. Operating the injection pump dry can cause pump failure.• Bleed all of the air out of the fuel system by cracking the injector lines.• Run the engine at throttle and at no load until it reaches operating temperature.• Verify that no leaks are present and that the cooling system is working properly.• Runaround and load test the unit. • After the engine has heat cycled check the valve lash and re-torque the cylinder head bolts if practical.• Finish assembly of the truck and it’s ready to ship

Don’t ruin that ReMaN. Follow these simple steps and you will have quicker and more profitable diesel engine installations. If you would like to discuss this topic, need engine specifications or have any ideas for future articles please feel free to give us a call at 877/303-5438 ext 2.

It’s Not the Answer… It’s How You Give It By: Curtis Clark, Western Regional Sales Manager at Superior Tire & Rubber Corp.

We’ve all undoubtedly had to give bad news. Regardless of who that bad news was to, whether a customer, employee, or partner, the

effect of that news or answer isn’t so much in the answer itself but how it is presented. In selling, it’s much more important to frame the answer. Framing the answer is not avoiding giving an answer, rather it explains why it has to be that way and limits the potential confrontation. No! This is probably one of the most difficult and confrontational answers you’ll have to give. Think about anytime you’ve had to tell someone no in regards to your business. “No, that’s not warrantable”, “No, we can’t do it that way”, or “No, you can’t have that”. These phrases all illicit a response and much of the time it’s not positive. Not to mention it can put a cramp in your sales process or employee relations. However, saying the quotes above are the easiest and most painless. In the world of consultative selling it’s now our job to educate more than tell. If a repair is not warrantable, take the time to explain why. If you have backing information, bring it to explain and show the customer why. In this setting remember you’re not a lawyer (though sometimes you may have to act like one); tone will also have an effect on the message. Helping the customer understand why what they see as warrantable is not is important to how they will view your company. Don’t be afraid to provide solutions to their problem

even if there is nothing you or your company can do about it. Feel free to provide information on how you’ve seen the problem attacked or alleviated for other customers if it’s operational. Or if there is something you can do mechanically, then provide the information on how that can be done and the costs associated. What all this shows is that you’re committed to help solve the problem not just put it back on them. The same can be said for when an employee comes to you with an idea or request. Simply pushing them aside and saying “no” to something usually makes people upset. Take time to explain why their idea may not work (especially if it’s been tried before), or why they can’t have that day off. Limitations. Nobody likes to admit they can’t do something or that it’s not what they are strong at. Many of us like to say “yeah, I can make that happen” or “no problem, we can do that”. Keep in mind that you and your dealership will have limitations. There are going to be things you do very well, things that you don’t do as well or can’t do at all. When talking to a new customer it’s important to learn what they want and what they need. Can you handle the needs? How many of the wants can you provide? Let’s say you go into a competi-tive account and you can work on 80% of their fleet but 20% is specialized equipment that no one on your team understands. What do you tell the customer? Do you just sign it all up or do you let the customer know of your

limitation and offer to work on what you know best? It’s better to let the customer know up front what you can and cannot do. If you don’t have someone that can work on a turret truck, don’t sign it up on service, especially with competitive equipment (if it’s equipment you represent, it’s time to invest in some training). Explain that to the customer and feel free to explain the com-plexity of working on that type of equipment. When you over-extend yourself and your limits, you’ll stop fulfilling promises made. When you stop fulfilling promises, customers start looking elsewhere to fill those needs in their operation. Do all people respond well to the explained answer? Of course not. There are some people that want to believe it should be done no matter what or that warranty exists for everything. Even these people will get something out of the explanation rather than the simple “no” or “we can’t do that”. In fact many of them will be more combative with the simple answer rather than the explanation. By taking the time to spell out why something can or cannot be done shows that you understand your company and you know how you can best help the customer’s business.
