From the Vicarage Marsabit, northern Kenya... .

I am writing this from a very remote partof the world, where I am spending a fewweeks observing something of theAnglican Church in a very differentculture. I am travell ing with the Bishop ofMarsabit. Marsabit is a new diocese andan area the size of England, borderingEthiopia and Somalia. Much of it isdesert except for the town itself whichsits on an extinct volcano. The dioceseembraces many different tribes and mostpeople forge a living by keeping smallflocks of animals and growing what theycan, when they are not experiencingdrought. There are no tarmac roads andmost people l ive in vi l lages, in huts madeof sticks and whatever else they can find.

Many of the images and encounters ofthe last two weeks wil l l ive with me:children in dirty ragged clothes who lovesinging with big smiles; chi ldren sitting ontheir shoes, rather than the dirt floor, ifthey are lucky enough to own them; thenovelty of blonde, straight hair tochildren in remote vil lages promptingsmall hands to stroke my hair or skin;vibrant choirs ful l of women adorned withrows of exquisitely coloured beadsaround their neck; dirt and dustpervading everything; deep wells invi l lages, the only source of water; bone-jarring potholes as big as a bath; theMuslim call to prayer at 5amguaranteeing an early start to the day;everything seemingly chaotic to westerneyes yet l ife continuing; pulses andvegetables on market stal ls but very l ittleprocessed food available; lorries with 50or more people riding on top; people

walking for miles, including women withhuge bundles of firewood on their backs,to sel l at market; many different triballanguages; churches without a buildingmeeting under a tree; desert heat;everyone welcoming.

So much difference! And yet one of themost poignant events which representeda moment of common understanding, was in taking bread and wine together ina Communion service, a symbol of ourshared faith. I was reminded again thatwhatever the differences in the Anglicancommunion - differences that wil l betested significantly in the years ahead, especial ly between the African churchesand many churches in the West - thereis also much that unites us. Wherever Iwent the churches always wanted me tocarry their greetings to Bathford - sogreetings from the churches in Marsabit.

And final ly, some of you may recall thatat the Advent concert the money raisedwas to help complete the building of anursery school (reception class) inParkishon, a small vi l lage in the desertnear Marsabit. I had the privi lege ofbeing invited to be the first visitor intothe school and to welcome the childrenin to see the school for the very firsttime. 80 children wil l now be startingschool and, in the evening many of thetribesmen wil l be using the building tolearn to read and write. The sense ofappreciation was palpable and the entirevi l lage turned out with much celebrationfor the opening.

From here I head to Ethiopia but moreabout that next time.

With my love and prayers

Jane

We want them to learn the basic skil ls ofNumeracy and Literacy to the very bestof their abil ity. We want them to find outwhat their strengths and talents are.

Personally, I want the teachers in schoolto have the freedom to use their owncreativity and professionalism to providea rich curriculum that excites andenthuses. We want the children to smile,to be happy and be positive in al l thatthey do. The staff at school can makedecisions to help bring these aspirationsinto reality. And that means growing l ittlepeople into being the best bigger peoplethat they can be - wow. What aresponsibi l ity, but double wow, what atotal privi lege.

And to the community, please do notunderestimate your vital role in helpingus to educate the children - we feel verymuch a partnership between school andthe vil lage.

In the coming editions of the BathfordBulletin, it’s over to the classes withinBathford Primary to share a little of theirexperiences of school l ife. In themeantime, we wish you all a happy andhealthy year ahead.

Mr Stone, on behalf of Bathford C of EPrimary School

From the Staff and Children at BathfordPrimary School

Greetings again from Bathford School.

So…What should we be teaching thechildren in our school?

Many of the great thinkers have had firmviews on education. Plato thoughteducation should be holistic, includinglearning facts, ski l ls, physical discipl ine,and music and art particularly, which heconsidered the highest form ofendeavour.

Kant stressed the importance of teachingmoral maxims and learning by doing.Aristotle considered repetition to be akey tool to develop good habits. Freiresuggested that a deep reciprocity beinserted into our notions of teacher andstudent - al l within a school should bemodels of good learning.

At a much more simple level andexpressed in a far less cerebral way, Iwant the children in Bathford Primaryschool to feel happy and safe in andoutside school. As a whole staff, wewant the children to treat both childrenand adults with respect, good mannersand politeness. We want them to takeresponsibi l ity for their own actions.
