Ue Caloocan’s new building will be completed in time for Sy 2012-2013. this dedicated structure will

allow for more pupils and students of Ue Caloocan’s elementary and High School Department (EHSD) to benefit from the Ue brand of primary and secondary teaching, and coincides with the national implementation of the K-12 basic education program.

the new Ue building will be eight storeys high, with partially covered and open decks, and will house over 30 classrooms, plus computer labs, multimedia and instrumentation rooms, science labs, a canteen, a library, an auditorium and more.

BUSineSS tyCoon andrew l. tan was honored by the University of the east with the degree of doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, on december 8, 2011, at the PiCC Plenary Hall in Pasay City. the 2 p.m. event coincided with the 13th midyear Commencement rites of Ue manila and Ue Caloocan, and this marked the first time for Dr. Tan to receive an honorary degree from any institution.

His travellers international Hotel group inc. manages and runs resorts World Manila, the Philippines’ first integrated tourism resort located across ninoy aquino international

dr. tan undertakes various socio-economic development programs and supports projects contributing to the empowerment of the less privileged in Philippine society. among their programs is the megaworld Foundation scholarship, which provides grants to students that excel in both academic and leadership endeavors.

dr. tan is a recipient of several awards, among them the order of lakandula, with the rank of Bayani, in 2010. Ue has also recognized mr. tan as its most outstanding alumnus in 2003 and as one of the 60 most outstanding alumni in 2006,

in his commencement address, dr. tan looked back on his experiences as a Ue student. He also shared some of the six most valuable lessons he learned during his almost four decades in business: work hard from

day one; have a vision and pursue it with a passion; be innovative; be prepared for the unexpected; don’t give up; and share your blessings.

dr. tan is the 28th honoree to receive an honorary degree from Ue, and the eighth alumnus to be bestowed such an honor.

tHe Ue elementary and High School department (eHSd) in Ue Caloocan passed accreditation procedures by the Fund for assistance to Private Education (FAPE) after an accreditation visit to the Ue Caloocan Campus last november 11. with this accreditation, the Ue eHSd is now an education Service Contracting (ESC)-Accredited School, effective School year 2012-2013.

with the eHSd now an eSC-accredited school, graduates of public elementary schools who wish to enroll in the eHSd as freshmen may now be extended a P10,000 subsidy annually by the Philippine government through

the eSC is one of the major government programs through FaPe. the financial grant aims to help decongest the country’s public high schools by providing grants and subsidies worth P10,000 to students who enroll in private high schools from freshman year onwards. the program is similar to the now-defunct education Voucher System (eVS) of former President gloria macapagal-arroyo, of which the eHSd as well as the elementary and Secondary laboratory Schools in Ue manila were accredited schools.

Similar to other accreditations,

the FaPe accreditation looks at the quality of education, facilities, level of achievement of the faculty, curricular programs, leadership and management, as well as the school’s mission and vision, all of which the eHSd passed.

while there is no grade requirement or maintaining grade necessary to avail of the subsidy, the eHSd may adapt its own screening procedures to better evaluate the capabilities of those who will be recommended as grantees. in addition, the eSC is a continuous, government-mandated program, meaning there is no need for re-accreditation.

Boys’ Volleyball Team Wins 8th Consecutive UAAP Championship

‘8-Peat’ Attained; Girls’ Team Earns 2nd Place

tHe Ue red warriorS BoyS’ Volleyball team was declared the Champion for the eighth consecutive year of the UaaP Boys’ Volleyball tournament after defeating the University of Santo tomas in three sets last February 5 at the Ue Caloocan gym. as such, the Boys’ Volleyball team now holds both the most number of championships won in the division with 11, as well as the longest winning streak in the division.

USt, on the other hand, had to hurdle a bout against national University, with whom they shared a 7-wins, 3-losses standing after the elimination round.

BUenaViSta Jr., a graduate of the Ue College of engineering-Caloocan, was recognized as the most outstanding electronics engineer in the Philippines by the institute of electronics engineers in the Phils., inc. (ieCeP) during its Convention and exhibit at the SmX Convention Center last nov. 3 to 5.

in the same ceremony, he received the award for outstanding eCe in the regulatory Field, making him eligible for the most outstanding eCe in the Philippines award.

a native of ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, engr. Buenavista graduated from Ue with a BSeCe degree in 1987; he went on to earn his eCe license in 1988. He served as foreman at Uniden Philippines Corporation from 1988 to 1989 before starting work at the national telecommunications Commission (ntC) as a telecommunications engineer in 1990.

in 1997, he was promoted to Regional Director Officer-in-Charge of the NTC Western Mindanao Office. in 2001, he became ntC’s director for administrative and Finance department, based in manila. He returned to mindanao as the regional director of the NTC Northern Mindanao Office from 2002 to 2006. From 2006 to 2007,

he became the director of telecom Planning and development dept. of the NTC’s Main Office in Manila. He was reappointed ntC regional director for northern mindanao in 2007, a position he holds to the present.

in addition, he also provided consultancy services to the misamis oriental telephone System and the Office of the Undersecretary of the department of energy. He also served as the Chairman of the regional information and e-Commerce Committee of the Regional Development Council for region 10 from 2008 to 2010. in the same period, he became the Founding Officer of the organization dubbed Career executive officers for northern mindanao (Ceo-nm). He has also been an invited lecturer-facilitator for policy development, change management and leadership trainings and team buildings since 2006.

Prior to his ieCeP presidency, engr. Buenavista was the ieCeP’s elected Vice President for external Affairs for January to December 2009, and was its Vice President for internal affairs for January to december 2010.

He has received numerous awards, mostly from the rotary Club

mr. Pelagio S. Sardoma Jr., a graduate of the Ue College of Business administration-manila who has been based in the USa since november 1974, has returned to his alma mater in a big way: by setting up, through a memorandum of understanding with Ue, a scholarship program for a succession of graduating accountancy students of his College.

in his visit on august 2, 2011, to UE Manila—his first time to see the Campus again since graduating in 1969—mr. Sardoma met with President ester a. garcia to establish the Pelagio S. Sardoma Jr. Hope Scholarship Program.

this program is one of the major projects in the Philippines of the Sardoma group inc., which was incorporated in the Philippines in 2011. mr. Sardoma has actually been permanently based in guam since 1984, the year he established Sardoma & Associates, a firm that he owns and operates and which continues to offer accounting, bookkeeping, taxation and business consulting services to residents of guam, the Pacific and continental USa.

Having needed to earn money to stay enrolled, by working as an agency-based security guard for a succession of companies while studying for his Ue accounting degree, mr. Sardoma aims for the Hope scholarship to be a lifeline, starting in school year 2012-2013, by sponsoring the tuition and miscellaneous expenses of a graduating accountancy student of CBa manila who may be experiencing financial difficulty. The selection process will be undertaken by mr. Sardoma and his son Paul John, who is the Sardoma group’s Chief operating officer, in coordination with Ue through its Admissions Office in Manila.

in addition, the Hope scholarship will also offer to sponsor the review fee of a few deserving, financially struggling reviewees, for the licensure examination for certified public accountants, at the Ue Center for review and Special Studies.

a CPa throughout his career, mr. Pelagio Sardoma Jr. passed the CPa licensure exam in the Philippines in 1970. after a series of accounting-related work, he migrated to guam in thanksgiving 1974. after briefly staying in new york starting in 1978, he and his family moved back to guam in 1984, where he has been based ever since, but not before earning his american CPa license in new Jersey in 1982. He has since been a member of the American Institute of Certified Public accountants, and has been a practicing CPa of new Jersey since ’82 and of guam since ’86. For many years, he was even the only Filipino CPa in guam.

in 2005, he added to his life’s work by establishing mega realty, a real estate services firm of which he is the Principal Broker. mega realty is the representative in guam of megaworld Corporation and Properties of dr. andrew l. tan who, incidentally, is also a Ue CBa manila graduate.

mr. Sardoma has also been a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus since 1989 and has been, since 2006, a guam-government-appointed member of the state’s Board of equalization for real estate, of which he is the incumbent Secretary.

and ieCeP. He received both the Service award and the Presidential Citation award in 2000 from the rotary Club of Zamboanga City west. He was also recognized as rookie rotarian of the year in 2003 by the rotary Club of Cagayan de oro west. also in 2003, he received the outstanding eCe in government and Public Service from the ieCeP-national. in 2009, he received the Presidential recognition award, also from the ieCeP-national. He was one of the semi-finalists in the Civil Service Commission-region 10’s outstanding Head of agency award in 2010.

engr. Buenavista, who will also serve as the national President and Chairman of the ieCeP for 2012, joins a long line of Ue alumni who have been awarded by the ieCeP for their outstanding contributions in the field of electronics engineering. recently recognized as well were Coe Caloocan associate dean miriam r. Borja (Ue BSeCe 1984), who was recognized as outstanding eCe in the Field of education in 2010, and CICT Telecommunications Office Project manager george P. tardio (Ue BSeCe 1995), who was awarded as the 2010 outstanding eCe in the field of Communications.

SHeila m. geronimo oF the Ue College of Computer Studies and Systems is now an IBM-certified academic associate for dB2 9 database and application Fundamentals. this after she successfully completed an intensive training program which was organized by the Philippine Society of it educators national Capital region (PSite-nCr), led by current PSite President John ruero, in cooperation with iBm Philippines, and held on december 5-9, 2011, at adamson University.

dB2 is a type of database management software by IBM that facilitates interaction among computer users.

iBm, through PSite-nCr, invited Ue and the Society’s other member-institutions to join the training program. among the perks of the training program was the free certification provided by IBM, which usually costs $200.

Prior to the actual seminar, Prof. geronimo (seen in the photo above, 7th from left, with the program’s other participants) was one of the 17 people who passed the qualifying examination for eligibility to undergo training given by iBm Philippines in the first week of December.

Out of that 17, only 11 attended the five-day rigorous training. Prof. geronimo was the lone Ue participant along with attendees from different schools such as Centro escolar University, technological institute of the Philippines, manila Central University, lyceum of the Philippines University and ama

lectures and two or three examinations, all in preparation for the final exam by iBm international. Prior to the final examination, they were given a mock exam, of which only those who passed would be allowed to take the certification exam.

of the 11, only Prof. geronimo and eight others were certified after passing the certification exam.

As a certified Academic Associate, Prof. geronimo is now entitled to provide training on dB2 (at iBm’s discounted rate), which she intends to do to the graduating CCSS students as well as to her co-faculty members, with the support of Ue CCSS dean rodany merida. Such training will be beneficial for UE students and the University as a whole since it will provide students with a new learning venue regarding database software. With the certification coming from iBm, an industry specialist, this also mean that Ue students would be equipped with the latest database management systems used by the industry.

Prof. geronimo is a Ue CCSS graduate, having earned her BS Computer Science degree in 1992 and doctor of education in administration in 2011 from the Ue graduate School. She currently serves as the President of Ue CCSS Faculty Club, and is the former President and an honorary member of PSite-nCr.

She also holds a Java netBeans certification, which she earned in 1998.

tHe Ue StUdent CatHoliC action-Christian Communities Program began its traditional Christmas caroling of various Ue Manila offices on December 1, 2011.

a longtime tradition of the organization, the SCa-CCP’s member-students go in shifts to visit offices on campus and sing carols in exchange for donations. the project’s proceeds go to their annual Christmas gift-giving program at the tala leprosarium in northern Caloocan.

tala leprosarium is one of the eight sanitaria mandated to serve patients afflicted with Hansen’s disease, which is more popularly known as leprosy. the haven was established in 1940 by Commonwealth

act no. 161, which declared the leprosarium as a reservation and settlement area for Hansenites and their immediate families. it has a total land area of 130,000 hectares. it maintains facilities for ambulatory, disabled and aged leprosy patients.

the leprosarium has long been a beneficiary of the UE SCA-CCP’s Christmas caroling.

For 2011, their Christmas Program was held on december 18. For this visit, the SCa-CCP prepared a short program and a simple salu-salo for the patients and staffers. They also prepared simple gifts such as groceries for the patients, some of whom have been abandoned by their loved ones.

tHe Ue gradUate SCHool distributed Christmas gifts to about 30 senior citizens from Barangays 401 and 402 in Sampaloc, manila, under the Project alay Kay lola at Lolo ng Maynila (ALOLA) gift-giving last december 20 at the main lobby of the P. o. domingo Center for information technology. a combination of community outreach and research, Project alola seeks to help senior citizens improve their health through nourishment, free dental services, exercise, recreation, guidance and counseling, as well as to measure the impact of the project through research.

at the gift-giving, dr. marietta reyes-otero, the program’s project leader, assured that the graduate School—through the leadership of master in dentistry Program Coordinator dr. elisa Puzon—will continue the free dental checkup and free denture program even after the end of the research.

aUrora graCe r. HernandeZ (above), a 4th-year BS information technology student of the Ue College of Computer Studies and Systems, was a participant in the autodesk Panorama-iiko experience 2011 last december 10 to 15, at the Hong Kong Convention and exposition Center.

Sponsored by autodesk, producer of 3D design and engineering software for architecture, the event featured a total of 24 students from 10 countries including india, malaysia, australia, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Japan and South Korea. ms. Hernandez was the Philippines’ lone representative.

She was selected to compete after CCSS Prof. Ronan Espinueva submitted her final project “Sniiko,” a variation of autodesk’s mascot-model iiko, to the company. Soon, she had mr. Bobby tan of autodesk Singapore informing her that she was invited to participate in the main event.

in Hong Kong, ms. Hernandez was assigned to a seven-person team composed of participants from india, australia, Hong Kong and malaysia. they had to create a five-minute video featuring iiko. the group also had, as their mentor, mr. ian Cope, who worked on the special effects of some Hollywood films, among them Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Green Lantern.

at the end of the event/seminar, ms. Hernandez was awarded a certificate signifying that they were autodesk Panorama graduates.

The Office of Mayor Lim provided snacks for the elderly in all of the 12 Saturdays of sessions from august to october via mr. Jay dela Fuente, a Ue ma Public administration student who is now the head of manila department of Social welfare (mdSw). He was assisted by ms. Celia garcia and ms. Cecil of the same office. Mayor Lim provided recreation via free entrance to the manila ocean Park and the manila Zoo.

Ue oeCo director rogelio i. espiritu made his nStP students available for the interview portion of the research. the barangay chair, ms. Cynthia achacoso, and Kagawad george lazo patiently extended their help to the research team by identifying the senior citizens of Brgys. 401 and 402 whose ages ranged from 60 and above. Coming from various parts of the US and from Canada, the visiting alumni were impressed at the high level of Ue’s technological development.

Santiago thanked them for the research grants they have given to the graduate School and assured them that these are being put to good use. graduate School (gS) dean avelina a. de la rea expressed joy in providentially being at Ue at the time of her sorority sisters’ visit.

Because they had several activities lined up for the day, the visiting alumni chose to spend the few remaining minutes at the St.

Clara Sayseng-Maniago, started a gift-giving project for the University which the dean said will be earmarked for research. another member of the group, mrs. rebecca Santiago-Herrera, stated that she is with the University of toronto and would be willing to help

the graduate School in its research efforts. Dean De La Rea welcomed her sorority’s assistance as more research will help the graduate School meet two objectives: contribute to knowledge and attain a higher standing in the academic community.

tHe Ue red warriorS-men’S Fencing team emerged as the big winner of the fencing tournament of Season 74 of the University athletic association of the Philippines (UaaP), winning the championship in three divisions and bringing home a total of 32 medals, including 15 gold medals.

the tournament, which was held from december 2 to 5 at the ninoy aquino Stadium in manila, saw Ue’s women’s fencing team emerge as champion for the fifth straight year, Ue’s boys’ fencing team become champion for the second year in a row, and Ue’s girls fencing team become champion as well.

aside from winning medals, four of lualhati’s fencers won individual awards: Patricia marie melendres and nathaniel m. Perez were declared the most Valuable Player in the women’s and boys’ division, respectively, while Kim Paolo gutierrez and Bruce Kevin H. ng were declared the rookie of the

tHe Ue red warriorS taBle tennis team earned championships in two tournaments in november and december 2011.

the team was the Champion in the milo national Finals held in lingayen, Pangasinan on november 18-20, 2011. the Ue team represented not just the University but the national Capital region as well.

the team swept all three of its milo national matches. each match consisted of a best-of-three type of competition, wherein the team that won two out of three games claimed victory.

in the first match, nCr vs. mindanao, lyr eden S. leyva, a 4th-year student of Ue’s Secondary laboratory School, defeated her opponent in a 3-0 wipeout, while another senior, donna marie r. gamilla, and freshman student Celina a. Vasquez defeated their rivals, 3-0, in the doubles competition, giving team nCr a team match result of 2-0 against mindanao.

in the second match, they also had a team match result of 2-0 against luzon. Jaezl may B. ingeniero (4th-year SlS) defeated her competitor, 3-0, while donna gamilla and Celina Vasquez again prevailed, 3-0.

in the last match against the Visayas, Jaezl ingeniero again beat her opponent, 3-1. donna gamilla and Celina Vasquez also beat their rivals, 3-0. Both victories gave nCr another 2-0 team result.

in addition to these victories, Jaezl ingeniero was awarded as the tournament’s most Valuable Player.

the table tennis warriors, as part of team nCr, were also declared the overall Champions in the Batang Pinoy national Championships on

tHe Ue red warriorS-men’S Basketball team competed in the 2012 mingdao international University Basketball invitational tournament at mingdao University in Chungwa, taiwan on January 3 to 7, 2012.

this marked the return of the Warriors to the tournament after being unable to participate last year. it was the warriors’ third time to join the annual tournament, having joined in the inaugural mingdao Cup in 2009, where they earned 2nd Place, and then in 2010. the tournament was Coach Jerry Codiñera’s second international tournament since becoming the warriors’ Head Coach in January 2011, the first being the Asian University Basketball Championship in Bintulu, malaysia last June 2011.

the competition featured six university teams in all: three from taiwan and one each from Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

majority of the Ue red warriors competed internationally for the first time, since our mingdao contingent was composed mostly of members of the warriors’ team B, namely dan irvin d. alberto, moustapha arafat, Benjamin isabelo r. dy, Seraj aldrin a. elmejrab, Pedrito d. galanza Jr., ivan Jeric S. Jaezl ingeniero was declared the Best Female Player of this competition as well, equivalent to being the tournament’s most Valuable Player. in this competition, Ue’s warriors contributed to team nCr’s medal count by winning two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal.

in the girls’ Singles event, lyr Leyva and Jaezl Ingeniero ranked first in their respective groups at the end of the qualifiers. In the quarterfinals, leyva and ingeniero defeated both their opponents from mindanao and north luzon respectively, both with a score of 3-0. In the semi-finals, both also defeated their opponents from the Visayas, 3-1, to arrange a Finals face-off between them. In the finals, it was ingeniero who prevailed over leyva with a score of 3-2.

in the mixed doubles, the groups of donna gamilla (with michael Villamor) and lyr leyva (with alexis Volante) also ranked number one in their respective groups.

in the semi-finals, gumilla’s team settled for 3rd Place after bowing down to their opponents from the Visayas, 3-2, while leyva’s team advanced to finals after beating their opponents from the Visayas as well, 3-2.

in the finals, leyva and her partner claimed the championship after crushing their Visayan rivals, 3-2, giving them the championship.

Prior to their back-to-back win in Pangasinan and naga, the table tennis team scored a trio of victories in the eastern Cup table tennis Championships last July and the

The UE Red Warriors finished the competition with two wins—one of which was notably against mingdao’s own team, which was the defending champion—and three losses. Our boys placed fifth overall, behind champion South Korea’s Hanyang University, as well as three universities from taiwan—mingdao University, national taiwan normal University and Chinese Cultural University—but ahead of Japan’s tohoku University, whose team the warriors had also defeated.

the Ue red warriors, however, took home two special awards. moustapha arafat was declared Slam dunk Champion of the tournament, while teammate dan irvin alberto took home the award of three-Point Shootout Champion.

most recently, the Ue red warriors won 3rd Place in the Cebu meet, held from January 20 to 22 in Cebu City. they stood behind champion team San Beda College and 2nd Placer University of Cebu, but ahead of the University of the Visayas.
