The whole point of a church is to minister in the world, not just gather in the sanctuary for a sermon. Just as the weekly pre-game speech inspires a team to play hard for the next 60 minutes on the football field, the weekly sermon inspires a church to live faithfully for the next 6 days on the mission field (your home, work, school, community, wherever God places you from Monday through Saturday). Ephesians 4 says that a pastor is a spiritual coach. Just as a coach‟s job is to prepare their players for athletic competition, a pastor‟s job is to prepare the congregation to live out their baptism in the world. The pastor is a “player coach”; yet the team has limited effectiveness if the coach tries to play multiple positions on the field while many players are cheering from inside the locker room. A pastor is to equip the team to go out onto the mission field and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world . Our #1 goal is not to increase our attendance and membership. “The gifts Christ gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,

to equip the saints (Christians) for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-12)

Imagine a football coach giving a rousing pre-game

speech. Every player is on the edge of their seat. At the con-

clusion of his motivational talk, the coach cries, “Let‟s get out

there and show the other team who we are!” Then he runs out

of the locker room onto the field…with only some of the play-

ers behind him.

The rest of the team stays in the locker room buzzing

about what a great talk their coach has just given. Some pull

out their cell phones to text their friends about the inspiring

message they‟ve just heard. But they never leave the locker

room to join their coach and teammates on the field to play

the game.

Sadly, this story symbolizes too many churches to-

day. The whole point of a football team is to play on the field,

not just gather in the locker room for a speech. The whole

point of a church is to minister in the world, not just gather in

the sanctuary for a sermon. Just as the weekly pre-game

speech inspires a team to play hard for the next 60 minutes on

the football field, the weekly sermon inspires a church to live

faithfully for the next 6 days on the mission field (your home,

work, school, community, wherever God places you from

Monday through Saturday).

Ephesians 4 says that a pastor is a spiritual coach.

Just as a coach‟s job is to prepare their players for athletic

competition, a pastor‟s job is to prepare the congregation to

live out their baptism in the world. The pastor is a “player

coach”; yet the team has limited effectiveness if the coach

tries to play multiple positions on the field while many players

are cheering from inside the locker room. A pastor is to equip

the team to go out onto the mission field and make disciples

of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our #1 goal is not to increase our attendance and membership.

Our #1 goal is not to meet our budget and pay our askings.

Our #1 goal is not even to make converts (believers in Jesus).

Our #1 goal is to make disciples (followers of Jesus)

who will go make other disciples

who will, with God’s help, change the world.

FEBRUARY 2011

Twelve months from now, may each of us be able to

answer YES to the following questions:

1. Are you more committed to following and obeying Jesus

now than you were a year ago?

2. Do you love God and love your neighbor more now than

you did a year ago?

3. During the past year, have you grown in your willingness

to give, forgive, witness, serve, pray, and read the Bible?

“The gifts Christ gave were that some would be…

pastors…to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

for building up the body of Christ.”

Christ is calling us to join Him on the mission field.

Will we leave the locker room and go play our position?

Blessings,

Pastor David

FEBRUARY

INFORMATION:

Matthew 22:37-40

Jesus replied, " You must love the Lord your God with all

your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first

and greatest commandment. A second equally important

commandment: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire

law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these

two commandments."

My prayer for us this month is that this becomes our focus for

love, and not just showing our love to the ones that it is easy

for us to love.

We also have some tentative family activities in the process

of being scheduled, like family bowling night, a skate night

and possibly a trip joined with our youth in Mid-March.

Stay posted via Sunday Morning Spark for all the details!

Hope to see you there!
