Lionesses and Leos As we start the second month of 2011 we are looking at a month known as Heart Awareness Month. The American Heart Association calls for everyone to wear something Red on National Wear Red Day on February 4 th . This will bring an awareness of saving lives every day. Although we are not the Heart Association we as Lions save lives every day by our deeds. We have provided glasses, medical equipment, food baskets as well as food gift cards thereby saving the people in our communities from hunger and the vision of many. We must continue to meet the needs of our community daily throughout the year. We need to get healthy ourselves in order to continue our goal of service. We need to get active by finding time in our overscheduled lives for exercise. This will give you more energy and therefore able to do more than before you started getting regular exercise. Simple things such as parking further from your destination, taking short walks throughout the day, or play video-games with your grandchildren and family. The simplest, positive change you can make to effectively improve your heart health is to start walking. It’s enjoyable, free, easy, social and great exercise. How will this affect your ability to function and BE ACTIVE in Lionism? Will this enable you to provide more hands to complete your fundraisers or service activities? Can you make this resolution to better your health as well as your ability to serve? Even though this is not the beginning of the year we can still make resolutions for the remainder of the year. It might help you to think about what Helen Keller is quoted as having said, “ Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” The following items might be resolutions, you want to consider for your club: Pay dues as soon as you receive your statements from LCI, State and District Conduct election of club officers for Lions year 2011-2012 prior to April 15, 2011 And submit your results online by completing PU101 online by May 15 2011. First Vice District Governor Comments

Dear Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leos:

Where has the time gone? I can’t believe we are in the month of February. We have

already completed three of International President’s Sid Scruggs goals: engaging our

youth, sharing the vision and relieving the hunger. Our district has stepped up to the

plate in helping to achieve his goals and theme “Beacon of Hope.” Our clubs know

that as Helen Steiner Rice wrote “Time is not measured by the years that we live, but

by the deeds that we do and the joys that we give.” Thank you for your caring and

sharing for others. You are truly Lions Lightning the Way.

Due to the weather DG Linda and I will be visiting some clubs on rescheduled dates,

but we will get there in sharing what our clubs are doing. On January 22nd

, we had fifteen Lions from our

District attending the Club Excellence Program in Morgantown, PA . There were close to ninety Lions there

representing their districts to hear how we can build Membership, Strengthen the Club and Resources needed to

do so. You will be hearing more about this Program. Again, I would like to thank all our clubs for the great job

you have been doing so far and I know will continue to do so because you are living our motto “WE SERVE”.

We have State council the weekend of February 4-6 and are hoping for no snow especially like last February

(28-30 inches) with no heat, no electricity. We will be prepared this time with flashlights and extra blankets.

Well, it is getting time to nominate and elect your officers for next year. When you do, will you please send

your PU-101 Form with their information to DG Linda, 1st VDG Gerri and 2

nd VDG Don. This is how we will

be able to know of any changes and using the information in making up our new directory for 2011-12. Please

send to us by April. Also mark April 29-30th

on your calendar for our District Convention. You will be getting

more information shortly. “Remember We Are Lions of the World-Lighting the Way as WE SERVE.”

Yours in Lionism, 1st VDG Gerri

MELVIN JONES FELLOWSHIP

The Melvin Jones Fellowship Program was established in 1973 in honor of

Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International. Melvin Jones Fellowships are given to individuals in recognition of unrestricted donations of US$1,000 to Lions

Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Such a contribution illustrates a significant commitment to humanitarian service and allows LCIF to perform such miracles as

preserving sight, combating disability, promoting health and providing disaster relief.

New Melvin Jones Fellows receive an MJF pin, commemorative plaque and a letter

from the LCIF Chairperson. If the donor so chooses, he/she may use their donation credit to honor another individual with a Melvin Jones Fellowship.

Since its inception, the Melvin Jones Fellowship program quickly became the backbone

of LCIF’s funding. The Foundation received a significant increase in MJF donations during Campaign SightFirst and it successor, Campaign SightFirst II. Most of the

donations to both campaigns were MJF donations.

Today, MJF donations account for 70% of the Foundation’s annual revenues. It is largely through the support of this program that LCIF continues to be a leader in

providing humanitarian service throughout the world.

Quick Facts

o The names of all Melvin Jones Fellows are displayed on a rotating computer list

in the LCIF Recognition Room at International Headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. Each year

o Fellowship recipients are invited to attend the Melvin Jones Fellows Luncheon at the International Convention.

o Districts, clubs and individuals can donate to LCIF through the Melvin Jones

Fellowship Program, but only an individual can receive the recognition. o Melvin Jones Fellowships can be named in honor or in memory of an individual

o Only unrestricted donations are eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowships unless otherwise approved by the LCIF Executive Committee.

o The MJF donation does not need to be paid at once; minimum installments to LCIF of US$100 can be paid over a five-year period to total US$1,000, at which

time donor applies for the MJF.

DISTRICT CONVENTION BASKETS District Governor Linda has again asked me to do the baskets for this year’s

upcoming convention. I am asking every club in the district to think about donating one or two. It is one of the money makers to offset some of the costs of the Convention. I sure could use your help selling tickets this year.

Here are a few basket ideas for your club: A Lottery Basket, snack basket, baking basket, spring planting basket, pasta basket, pet basket, these are just a few ideas. I'm sure your clubs have more ideas. Another idea is for every member to donate a bottle and you can have a basket of cheer, complete with snacks. Baskets should be valued at about $50. Each.

If you want to help or donate a basket you can e-mail me [email protected] or call me at 215-757-6442.

Lion Estella Kristiniak, Specialty Baskets Chairperson

Protecting our Environment

Lions Clubs International adopted environmental protection as an official policy in 1972 and as an Adopted Service Program in 2003. Today, the need for a global response to the environmental

issues of our planet is greater than ever. We live in a world in which the forests that renew its air and the water that brings life to all things are in danger.

These are not dire predictions of the future. They are happening today. According to the United

Nations Environment Program, only about 20 percent of the world's population has reliable access to clean drinking water. More people die each year from unsafe water than from all forms of

violence, including war. The UNEP also estimates that the world has lost more than 80 percent of its forests in the last century alone.

In April, Lions Clubs International will shine a light on the environment. All Lions clubs around the

world are invited to participate in this global effort by planning events and activities such as:

organizing a community clean-up project;

working with a local forestry department to plant trees in your community;

educating your community about easy eco-friendly practices to adopt in daily life,

organizing a recycling project to collect old eyeglasses, batteries and small electronics.

There are many more project ideas available, along with a planning guide and other information at

"Protecting Our Environment" Global Service Action Campaign.

The members of Bucks County Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Lions Club (BCABVI) are grieving over the passing of their founder and long time Lion, Frank J. Kolanko. We were privileged to know Frank. His dedicated efforts, improved the lives of many others. His humor made any task easier, and he was generous with words of praise for a job well done. How he lived, inspires us to do better. With Frank in our hearts, we will continue “to serve”, as he did for so many years.
