2010 INFORMS ANNUAL MEETING

The ongoing threatof the H1N1 flu, futurepandemics and biowar-fare have given newurgency to pioneeringresearch done by EvaLee on the rapid designand deployment oflogistical strategies to

deliver both vaccines and antidotes dur-ing medical crises. Lee is director of theCenter for Operations Research inMedicine and HealthCare, associate professor with the School of Industrialand Systems Engineering at GeorgiaInstitute of Technology and co-director of the Center for Health Organi-zation Transformation, a National Science Foundation Industry/UniversityCooperative Research Center.

Lee, in collaboration with the Centersfor Disease Control, is the creator ofRealOpt, a decision support systemenabling real-time strategic and opera-tional planning for large-scale systemsmodeling and optimization for publichealth. RealOpt is designed to take theguesswork out of mass dispensing ofmedical countermeasures. In numerousanthrax exercises and flu vaccinationevents conducted in the United States,

emergency planners using RealOpt wereable to determine best facility layout, opti-mal staffing and throughput, cost-effec-tive operations, and to perform strategicand operational planning. Lee’s effortsalign particularly well with the recentnews that the Department of Health andHuman Services will review in first-quar-ter 2010 how the nation can more quick-ly develop and produce medicalcountermeasures for public health emer-gencies.

David Ronen, profes-sor of logistics and opera-tions management at theUniversity of Missouri-St. Louis, was awardedthe 2008 Goodeve Medalby the OperationalResearch Society (ORS)for his paper “Tactical

Store Delivery Planning.” The paperdescribes a system for planning store deliv-eries that was developed for, and imple-mented by, a major U.S. retailer.

The Goodeve Medal, presented at theannual ORS Awards Ceremony at theRoyal Society in London (England), “isawarded in recognition of the most out-standing contribution to the philosophy,

theory or practice of O.R. published inthe Journal of the OR Society, the EuropeanJournal of Information Systems or ORInsight, within the relevant year.”

Patrick Qiang, assis-tant professor of Opera-tions and Managementwith the School of Grad-uate Professional Studiesat Penn State GreatValley, received the 2009Charles V.Wootan Awardfrom the Council of

University Transportation Centers (CUTC).The award recognizes an outstanding Ph.D.dissertation in the Transportation Policy& Planning category based on a nationalcompetition. Founded in 1979, CUTCserves as a forum for U.S. universities andcenters to interact with government andindustry. Its members include more than85 of the nation’s premier university-based transportation research and educa-tion programs.

Qiang also received the 2009 JudithLiebman Award from INFORMS whichrecognizes outstanding student volun-teers who have been “moving spirits intheir universities, their student chaptersand the Institute.” ❙ORMS

The 2009 Roundtable fall meetingwas held in San Diego, Calif., in con-junction with the INFORMS annualmeeting. The traditional Roundtablewelcome outing featured a cruisearound San Diego harbor.

The meeting theme was “OR in Trans-portation,” and the program includedpresentations from both Roundtablemembers and industry experts.

The program began with an excel-lent keynote presentation by TomVanderbilt, author of “Traffic, Why WeDrive the Way We Do (and What It SaysAbout Us).”Vanderbilt focused on find-ings and implications from his book inan enlightening, interesting talk. Thediscussion included fascinating obser-vations related to how humans interact,communicate and sometimes cooperate

with each other in the stressful world oftransportation.

The next presentation featured JeffWinters from UPS who discussed thechallenges of moving O.R. software fromthe lab onto the road. The talk includedseveral useful takeaways and hard-learnedknowledge such as: the importance ofleveraging existing business processes;making sure the engineers understand thebusiness, and the business users under-stand the technology; and the importanceof ongoing communication and educa-tion as products are deployed.

Cynthia Barnhart of MIT spoke onutilizing operations research to improveairline schedule reliability. ProfessorBarnhart characterized the reliability ofthe U.S. aviation system as measured bydelays and disruptions to aircraft and

passengers. She discussed variousapproaches for increasing reliability, orrobustness, of airline schedules. Theseapproaches are aimed at building sched-ules that are more resilient to distur-bances, reducing the number of timesthe schedule must be repaired, and pro-viding more recovery options when aschedule is disrupted.

Doug Smith, professor of manage-ment science and director of the Centerfor Business and Industrial Studies at theUniversity of Missouri-St. Louis, present-ed a talk on “Blending Optimization andSimulation for Analysis of an InlandWaterway Transportation System.”Smith’s talk focused on a project toimprove performance of the MississippiRiver lock system. The work integratedanalytical approaches and studied trade-
