SUNSHINE

Happy New Year to all!!!

I have received word that Mary

Fancher has been very ill and in and

out of the hospital pretty much these

past months. We are sure she would

love to hear from her LMMAR

friends. We wish her a healthy and

peaceful months ahead. Our thoughts

are with her. Mary can be reached at

It was with great sadness to learn of

the passing of Bob Spitler in Au-

gust. Even though there was a won-

derful recognition of his many activi-

ties with LMMAR for so many years,

we want it acknowledged again just

for the record. Just in case the flyer

was not placed in your newsletter or it

was misplaced, again we will notify

our members of his passing.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob

Spitler in person, after several years of

doing the Sunshine column. I had

several conversations over the phone

with him and always pictured him to

be a big, burly man. Funny how you

picture someone just by their voice

and make mental pictures of how

they look. He was a hoot!!! And I am

very sorry for his family in their

loss. He was a very fine man.

Lockheed Martin-Built Trident II

D5 Missile Achieves 130th Con-

secutive Successful Test Flight

SUNNYVALE, Calif., December 29th,

2009 -- The U.S. Navy conducted a

successful test flight Dec. 19 of a Tri-

dent II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM)

built by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT).

The Navy launched the unarmed mis-

sile from the submerged submarine

USS ALASKA (SSBN 732) in the Atlan-

tic Ocean.

This test marked the 130th consecu-

tive successful test flight of the Tri-

dent II D5 missile since 1989 – con-

tinuing a 20-year record of reliability

that is unmatched by any other large

ballistic missile or space launch vehi-

cle.

“The professionalism of the entire

Navy and industry team for the Trident

Strategic Weapon System has made

possible the 100-percent mission suc-

cess of the D5 missile in 130 test

flights over 20 years,” said Melanie A.

Sloane, vice president of Fleet Ballis-

tic Missile programs, Lockheed Martin

Space Systems Company, the Navy’s

Trident missile prime contractor.

The Navy launched the missile as part

of a Demonstration and Shakedown

Operation (DASO) to certify USS

ALASKA for deployment, following a

shipyard overhaul period. For the test,

a missile was converted into a test

configuration using a test missile kit

produced by Lockheed Martin that

contains range safety devices and

flight telemetry instrumentation.

First deployed in 1990, the D5 missile

is currently aboard OHIO-class subma-

rines and British VANGUARD-class

submarines. The three-stage, solid-

propellant, inertial-guided ballistic

missile can travel a nominal range of

4,000 nautical miles and carries mul-

tiple independently targeted reentry

vehicles.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Com-

pany, Sunnyvale, Calif., is the Trident

missile prime contractor for the U.S.

Navy Strategic Systems Programs.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems em-

ployees, principally in California, Geor-

gia, Florida, Washington, Utah and

Virginia, support the design, develop-

ment, production, test, and operation

and sustainment of the Trident Strate-

gic Weapon System. Lockheed Martin

Space Systems has been the Navy’s

prime strategic missile contractor

since the inception of the program

more than 50 years ago.

Lockheed Martin Introduces

IronClad - Secure Computing On

A USB Flash Drive

HERNDON, Va., January 18th, 2010 --

Today’s mobile workforce can now

trade in their laptop for a flash drive,

thanks to an innovative new mobile

computing technology from Lockheed

Martin [NYSE: LMT] and IronKey. The

new IronClad™ USB drive shrinks a

laptop’s hard drive – including the

entire operating system, software ap-

plications, and files – onto a secure

flash drive.

The result is a totally secure “PC on a

stick.” Users on-the-go can plug the

flash drive into just about any com-

puter or laptop in the world, and have

instant, secure access to their own

personal desktop and files. The Iron-

Clad technology runs the operating

system directly off of the flash drive,

meaning the user’s files never touch

the hard drive of the borrowed com-

puter, and the device leaves no trace

(Continued on page 5)

that it was ever there. Each IronClad

device is fully encrypted and delivers

hardware-level protection against to-

day’s most insidious malware threats,

including nearly undetectable rootkits.

“Imagine leaving the office at the end

of the day and, instead of slinging a

laptop bag on your shoulder, you tuck

a flash drive the size of a stick of gum

in your pocket,” said Charles Croom,

Lockheed Martin’s Vice President of

Cyber Security Solutions. “With Iron-

Clad drives, employees who need to

work at home or on travel, or field

operatives who deploy around the

country or around the globe, can carry

not just their files but their entire com-

puter on a three-inch USB drive. We’ve

built a smart network around each

drive, so IT managers have round-the-

clock control of and visibility into the

status and security of every device.”

Steve Ryan, senior vice president at

IronKey said, “USB storage devices are

rendered relatively useless without the

proper authentication and security

precautions in place. IronKey is a se-

curity company first and foremost,

and IronClad drives leverage IronKey’s

highly secure architecture design. We

are very pleased to be working with

Lockheed Martin to deliver this

trusted, secure product with hardware-

only password checking, secure virtual

desktop and remote management

capabilities.”

IronClad technology works by integrat-

ing advanced features at the hard-

ware, software, and network levels:

 Rugged, Secure Hardware:

Built on IronKey’s proven se-

cure USB drives, each Iron-

Clad drive includes at least

8GB of 256-bit encrypted stor-

age, wrapped in a rugged,

water- and shock-resistant

metal casing.

 Patent-Pending Mobile Com-

puting Software: Custom

Lockheed Martin technology

lets users run their entire

desktop – from the operating

system to specific applica-

tions and files – directly off of

the USB drive. Built-in ad-

vanced virus protection lets

users plug into any shared or

public computer with confi-

dence.

 Network-Wide Management:

Each IronClad drive is a node

on a centrally-managed net-

work that lets IT organizations

control security policies, keep

watch on each drive, and

carefully manage the applica-

tions that can or cannot be

installed on the drive.

Croom noted that IronClad technology

is envisioned as a key component of

an organization’s cyber security strat-

egy. “Data at the ‘edge’ – carried by

your mobile employees on laptops

and smart phones – is significantly

harder to physically protect than the

data inside the walls of your building,”

he said. “The enterprise management

tools built into each IronClad drive

make it significantly easier to monitor,

control and manage your cyber secu-

rity profile. We envision this system as

a key component of any IT organiza-

tion’s smart, layered cyber security

architecture.”

IronClad technology will be featured

at the 13th Annual Congressional

Internet Caucus Advisory Committee

Kickoff Technology Policy Exhibition,

on January 26, 2010. The Exhibition

will highlight some of the key pointed

issues that will continue to impact

policy-making in the 111th Congress.

The event runs from 5:00 – 7:00 pm

in the Hart Senate Office Building,

Room 902. For more information
