The end of year presentation went very well and my thanks again to all the organisers, presenters etc. The one disappointment was that some of the award recipients were not there and this year we need to work on having recipients at the presentation. The program for 2010 is now out on the web for review. The competition committee have put together a challenging list of set subjects and I encourage everyone to get out of their comfort zone and submit entries in the set subject competitions. As mentioned in the last Viewpoint the competition committee have also changed the point score system as follows which brings the Open points closer to the Set points. The social committee have also put together a range of outings which I hope will be well attended. Adventures in Wildlife Photography

Speaker

Esther Beaton

Tuesday 2nd February 2010.

To begin the New Year on an exciting note, we have lined up Esther Beaton to talk of the subject “Adventures in Wildlife Photography”. Esther is a very experienced professional photographer and speaker.

Robyn and William Stewart attended one of her workshops in the “Warrumbungle National Park” a few years ago.

For almost 30 years, Esther has given free reign to her wild heart and followed its call to many places around Australia.

As a full time professional photographer, she has amassed a huge image collection of images of the country's unique wildlife and scenery. Her award-winnning photographs have been published in hundreds of magazines, books and advertisements worldwide.

She began in the B&W darkrooms of the Photographic Unit at the Australian National University, advanced to managing the Unit for a short time, and then began her life-long love affair with nature and wildlife by working as photographer for the ACT Parks & Wildlife Service. After moving to Sydney in 1986, she expanded her repertoire by shooting for a range of corporate, editorial and government clients, as well as co-founding the nature-based photo library Auscape. For the last ten years, she has been shooting photographic features for Australian and international markets, both directly and through her NY agent, Black Star.

Esther has had a long-time collaboration with forest ecologist Professor David Lindenmayer. Their first collaboration was the book Life in the Tall Eucalypt Forests, which was the first to popularise the giant Mountain Ash forests of central Victoria as well as bringing to light the conservation pressures affecting them. Later, they also collaborated on another book, Woodlands - A Disappearing Landscape, which has also raised public awareness of another threatened Australian habitat.

Esther was also involved in the earliest discussions among Sydney photographers about forming a professional organisation to protect their business interests. Shortly afterwards F.A.C.E. was born, eventually becoming ACMP, of which Esther was a founding member and later NSW Chairman.

When at home, which is a beach house in the seaside hamlet of Pearl Beach, she also photographs the local colour found in her neighbourhood. That could be a project on flowers, herbs or even weeds but she is not afraid to drag challenging subjects like snakes, frogs and funnelweb spiders into her studio! Lately she has started to give nature photography lessons in the form of "Day Safaris on the Central Coast" to local enthusiasts.

In addition to photography, Esther Beaton also enjoys researching and writing about her discoveries and experiences which are published as features in domestic and international magazines. Visit her website at: www.estherbeaton.com.

Esther will have with her, her EBook on DVD – “The Nature Photography Cookbook” which will be for sale at a discount price of $37.00 cash. It can be seen on her web site at http://www.thenaturephotographycookbook.com/ Please have the correct amount.

FJKF Hi Everyone, It’s nice to be back amongst fellow photographers again. Thanks to Robert Shellberg and Ian Pinder for their efforts in “minding the shop” for me whilst I was in India and Nepal. From what I’ve been told, they did an excellent job! Now, for our opening Workshop for 2010…. As the Set Subject for the February competition is “Panorama”, our first workshop for this year will be on that subject. Keith Gillard has agreed to present “How to take Panoramic Photographs”. Keith has presented on this subject before and will be able to bring along examples of his images and discuss how to do it. After a coffee break, we will have three separate groups available:

1. Keith will continue to discuss in more detail how to take panoramas, 2. Val Fenbow will lead a group to discuss and field questions on this year’s competition, 3. Bob Cook will conduct a discussion group on long exposures to fit in with the

competition set subject in April Big plans for Workshop Nights in 2010 ………. See you there, Bob Cook Training Coordinator

A story of Challenge, Triump and Photography MARGOT 'S CHALLENGE In 2005 I received the news that my dormant breast cancer had woken up, stirred, stretched its long tentacles and had embedded the disease in my bones. Ouch! At this time my photography was nothing more than an interest, albeit a rather keen one, and I was making friends with a digital SLR and computer software. By 2007 I was using photography as an outlet to my somewhat altered lifestyle while coming to terms with the fact that I had a chronic illness. Photography helped by giving me a challenge and a goal. At first these achievements were very minor, but gradually as my confidence grew, I found I wasn’t thinking inwardly so much, but becoming more focused on my new found interest. So it was no surprise that once I began creating images in earnest, I was combing my story telling ideas with Australian imagery – and it is a skill, the more you practice the better you become. Because of my health difficulties, I can’t lift a lot of weight. I prefer not to use a tripod and only have one lens, albeit a good zoom one. My camera is a tool to capture elements that are later constructed into a creative, expressive image. When one experiences adversity in life, sometimes it happens for a reason. It’s up to each of us to grab that opportunity and run with it. I consider and know that someone, a higher being, is guiding and leading us on this chosen pathway of destiny which has many facets. Some restrict, some excite and present challenges BUT all are relevant and the important element throughout my journey is to remain POSITIVE, and believe in myself. FJKF MEMBER PROFILE: Marian Cabrera How and why did you start in photography? My sister and brother-in-law are the original photo buffs in the family and have been such great mentors to me. I went camera-crazy after getting some good results with my first compact camera. From the start, I was naturally drawn to taking architectural shots (a few of these have won awards at the Club). Over the years, I have amassed a number of photography books given to me as New Year’s/birthday presents. Richard I’anson’s Lonely Planet book on Urban Travel Photography remains my favourite. It features the most amazing, fresh angles and styles which continue to inspire me to this day. Two years ago, I met Richard at a photo awards function and I told him exactly this. Do you remember your first camera? An Olympus FE-150 compact was my first digital camera. I now use a Nikon D80 (with Nikkor 18-200 VR lens) and am lucky enough to borrow my brother-in-law’s lenses from time to time. What are your photographic goals? Overall, I’d like to become a well-rounded photographer with solid technical skills from shooting to post-processing. My immediate goal is to showcase my work to-date in a forum like RedBubble; to get feedback; and possibly generate sales. Longer term, I’d like to specialise in taking unusual portraits, architectural and still life images. What type of photography do you find the hardest to take? Anything involving live subjects – in just about any situation. A number of Club members do this so well and I truly admire them. What photos do you like to take the best? I’ve discovered a real passion for low light photography, whether it be outdoors or under controlled indoor conditions. I seem to be uploading quite a lot of floral still life shots in RedBubble but am open to exploring other subjects too. Whose photos in the Photography Club do you admire the most? I love comp nights as we all get a chance to see the work of some very talented photographers from the Club. I admire and follow the work of 4 photographers in the Club – I won’t name them but I haven’t fallen short of letting them know how much I enjoy their photos (and how I plan to continue getting inspiration* from their work (*translation: steal ideas from them). What are your thoughts on today’s Judges? We’ve had a mixed bag of judges. The good ones, in my opinion, have always strictly kept the commentary centered on the facets of the photograph and have had the audience’s interest at heart.

What advice would you give to a beginner in photography? Go with your gut and your heart and shoot as you please. Equally important, get to know your equipment very well and educate yourself as best as you can. Do you follow any sport or team or have a hobby? I get very little sleep during tennis grand slam time. It’s a good thing I don’t have pay TV or I wouldn’t be sleeping much at all watching minor tournaments too. I’ll be honest though, I follow (Chilean) Fernando Gonzalez’s games mostly. What has been your favourite holiday and travels? I loved the sights and food in Singapore. I went there for a seminar though so I didn’t really have enough time for shopping and photography. Locally, I regularly return to Melbourne, Armidale and Wollongong and take hundreds of photos each time. Name one thing we don’t know about you? I’ll name three: 1) I was involved in graffiti for 5 years – no, not as part of a crew but in a project officer capacity, coordinating a community grants program to eradicate graffiti through legal art (commissioned work) while involving at-risk youth; 2) I was a national Spelling Bee runner-up; 3) In terms of my culinary skills, I’m a cross between Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver. Do you have any suggestions for the Photography Club? I don’t know how viable this suggestion would be but it would be around the creation of learning modules that will see a photographer through stages of competency, to ultimately become a highly-skilled photographer. I’d also like to continue to see advanced members of the Club lead groups in practical and theoretical discussions. Comments : With a burgeoning membership, I hope the Club retains its ‘family feel’ – that’s what attracted me to join it, in the first place. Have a look at one of Marian’s favourite images on page 4
