Did you know that by 2008, most of the church denominations responsible for the operation of the residential schools in Canada had publicly apologized for their role in the neglect, abuse, and suffering of the children placed in their care. The Roman Catholic Church operated 62 of these schools. In 1997 the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement of regret about the Residential School system. In 2000 Pope John Paul II expressed regret about the system and in 2009; Pope Benedict offered an expression of regret to a delegation from the Canadian Assembly of First Nations. The display in the hallway between the church and the office presents a timeline history of the Residential Schools across the country as well as some of the significant bills and policies that were enacted by the Government of Canada. Do take some time to explore this display.
