Notes From Our Pastor

Dear parishioners, Last Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, the Church alerted us to the transforming power and message - Lent has begun. On Ash Wednesday we pointedly opened ourselves before God and acknowledged that we are sinners in need of repentance and grace. If we are honest with ourselves, we should acknowledge before God every day that we are sinners always in need of Him. Ash Wednesday heralds that Season of Lent when we are summoned to be honest before God and one another. Never should we boast before God. For we are mortal beings, sinners in need of God’s unending and boundless mercy. A mercy that is necessary for salvation. As ashes were placed on our heads, we hopefully asked God to make this Lent a time of real renewal for the Church, our parish, our families and of course ourselves. Let us remember that none of us walks the journey to repentance alone. Together we open our ears to hear God’s Word. Together we ask for forgiveness through the saving death and resurrection of Christ. Have a good and holy Lent,

Father Noesen CATHOLIC LENTEN PRACTICES Lent is the principle season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self denial, (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and performance of works of charity and mercy. * Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. * Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. * Church law considers disregard of these practices of our Faith tradition as seriously sinful because it separates one from the community’s spiritual practices and from the person of Christ in His Body — the community of our Parish and the Universal Church.

R.C.I.A. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS

Since last September, five members of the local community have been coming together on Wednesday evenings to look into the mysteries of our Catholic Faith. Four of these individuals are referred to as catechumens who have never been baptized and one individual has been baptized in another Christian denomination who is referred to as a candidate. Over the months we have discussed topics that are important in our development of faith such as the existence of God, the nature of God being three divine persons in one God (the Trinity), the coming of Jesus as our Redeemer and His mission on earth, the institution of the Catholic Church and the Apostolic nature of the Church, the role of the Blessed Mother in salvation history, the Saints, the Sacraments, the social teachings of the Church, and much, much more. These individuals have moved through the steps of pre-Catechumenate (the period of Inquiry) and Catechumenate (the time of catechesis or learning about the faith). On February 28th the Catechumens will be sent from Assumption Church (the Rite of Sending) to the St. Raymond Nonnatus Cathedral where Bishop Conlon will received them in the Rite of Election. The “Elect” will then spend the remainder of the Lenten Season in what is referred to as the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. This is a time of final preparation and a time of prayer as these five individuals approach the Easter Vigil where we pray they will make their Profession of Faith, receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist) and become faithful members of the Catholic Church. The one Candidate who was previously baptized will be received into the Catholic Church through the Rite of Reception and will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The spiritual journey for each of these individuals is unique and the decision to enter the Catholic Church comes after much contemplation and prayer. Please pray for these individuals during this important stage of the development. On the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sunday of Lent these individuals will be prayed for by our parish communities in special rites referred to as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Scrutinies. Please pray for the intercession of all the Angels and Saints that they be protected spiritually, emotionally and physically in their journey of faith.

Diocese of Joliet 2018 Annual Appeal

Last Sunday, we together along with every parish in the Diocese of Joliet officially began the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. It is my hope that the Annual Appeal will deepen a sense of the call we have all received from the Lord to extend His love and mercy to the entire Diocese. The Annual Appeal invites you to join with Catholics in the seven counties that comprise our diocese in supporting the good we are called to do because of our faith in Jesus Christ. The target goal for Assumption Parish this year is $33,100. The goal for Immaculate Conception Parish this year is $12,900. I realize that parishioners at Assumption Parish are being asked to give much this year with the church renovation and building campaign as well as our regular Sunday giving and now the annual appeal. So I ask each of you to pray on your response. Simply do what you can, and allow the Lord to direct you in your generosity. It is true no one person can do everything, but we can all do SOMETHING. The Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal is YOUR opportunity to do something, to make a difference in the lives of people hungry for the Lord Jesus. It’s important that we all give... equal sacrifice, not equal gifts. That’s what the Lord asks and invites us to consider. Perhaps this year more parishioners will join the Bishop’s Deo Gratias Society with a gift of $1,000 or more. If you have not done so already, take the time to look at the envelope you either received in the mail or last Sunday during the pew solicitation. Also, review information the Diocesean website

DioceseofJoliet.org. Let’s work together and meet this diocesan obligation in a timely manner. Hopefully, by the end of Lent! If everyone does something, we’ll have no trouble meeting and even exceeding our parish target goal, just as we did these past 9 years. Make your pledge today! Fill out the envelope or make a contribution on-line. If you make an on-line donation make sure you mark down your parish so that the parish gets credit for your contribution. Thank you in advance for your contribution, Father Noesen

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE ASSUMPTION PARISH and

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH We are most happy to announce that Dave & Sara Wollgast will be heading up Youth Ministry at Assumption Parish. Dave & Sara have been serving as Youth Ministers at Immaculate Conception for a number of years and have agreed to coordinate our program at Assumption Parish as well. There are many details still to be worked out. We invite and we need the High School youth and 8th Grade youth from both parishes to be involved in planning the program and activities. Currently, Dave and Sara are working with youth from both parishes directing and rehearsing the “Living Stations of the Cross”. The “Living Stations” will be presented at 7:00 pm in Berst Hall on March 18th and then again at noon on Good Friday, March 30th, at Immaculate Conception Church. This is a great opportunity to get back in touch with our faith and to meet other teens in our area. Call Dave and Sara at (815) 341-5946 or email them at [email protected] for more information. We thank Dave and Sara for the high energy they put into this ministry. We also want to thank Barry and Molly Sterba for the years of service they have given to this ministry. They have truly blessed the youth of Assumption Parish over the years! We are always looking for young couples to help in this ministry to our high school youth – it takes a little bit of time, a little bit of energy and a whole lot of love to make a big difference in our youths’ lives. Get Involved!!! For more information contact Dave and Sara Wollgast or Deacon Bill.

As we enter into this Lenten Season the Church asks us to enter into the observances of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. As Family Faith Formation members it is especially important to explain to our children why these three practices are so very important.

We live in a culture today that professes “It is all about ME!” When we become so absorbed in our own wants and needs we all too often fail to even think about our relationship with God or our relationship with our neighbors. When we turn in on ourselves and fail to think about God and our neighbor, we turn towards sin. One of the best definitions of sin is the failure to love God and failure to love our neighbor. This Lent, we are called to turn away from sin and to be faithful to the Gospel message of love!

When we become more prayerful, more sacrificing and more giving families, we begin thinking less about our own needs and desires and we think more about God and our neighbors. What does this process require??

It requires that we intentionally enter into prayer. Each day we should give God a few moments of our time – speak to Him and then open your ears and your heart to what He wants to say to you!

It requires that we not only obey the Church’s laws of fast and abstinence, but that we intentionally turn away from activities and items that offer no spiritual benefit to us. Fasting and abstaining is not only about food. We can do well by fasting and abstaining from television, the internet and other unnecessary activities.

It requires that we intentionally turn to others in need and actually help then financially or materially. Almsgiving, that is, giving of ourselves to those in need is the most visible example of how we get out of ourselves and learn to put others first. Almsgiving is the outward sign of our love for God and our neighbor.

These activities are not intended to make us feel good. These activities are intended to make us holier individuals and holier families. We pray that, through these Lenten practices, we grow more in love of God and that this love is extended to all our neighbors through acts of charity and compassion.

One last important piece – go to Confession! Lent is all about turning away from sin. As Catholics, we have the most beautiful opportunity to receive God’s Mercy and Forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On March 3rd at 10:00 am, there will be a special reconciliation service for FFF families at Assumption Church. Please make this a priority for your entire family. God bless you during this holy season!

In Christ, Deacon Bill

Sunday Reflection Jesus is tempted in the desert by Satan. On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus’ temptation in the desert. This event in the life of Jesus is reported in each of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—but it is not found in John’s Gospel. This year we read Mark’s account of this event-[Mark 1:12-15]. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark’s narrative are sparse. This is evident in Mark’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Satan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quoting Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert. In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by John the Baptist. In Mark’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus went into the desert immediately after his baptism, led by the Spirit. Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee begins after his temptation in the desert. Mark’s Gospel makes a connection between the arrest of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God is in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist, but it is also something new. As Jesus announces it, the Kingdom of God is beginning; the time of the fulfillment of God’s promises is here. The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert for 40days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of Lent. In Mark’s Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten observances are only a beginning, a preparation for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we promised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed because Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross.

Now that the renovation of our church is complete, many parishioners have mentioned how they have noticed and appreciated the wonderful new improvements that have been made. We are truly grateful to all parishioners and friends who have donated to this project and continue to pay on their pledges. However, we remain 1.2 million dollars in debt. This debt needs to be paid off as soon as the parish is able. As an expression of their gratitude and faith, many have expressed a desire to be part of the great things that have happened to our parish church by offering to make memorial donations to provide the many needed items we've installed.

Memorials provide an attractive opportunity for parishioners and supporters of Assumption Parish to remember loved ones and their family in a lasting way. Through our memorial gifts, much needed items for the renewal of our church building will be provided. A memorial is your opportunity to name/dedicate an item - a way to remember or "memorialize" the living or dead. It is not the purchase of an item itself (strictly speaking). Through memorials, much needed revenue to go toward paying off our debt will be realized, while providing items not necessarily budgeted for.

Please be generous in your gifts for our new church. Allow the Lord to direct you in your generosity, and make a true sacrificial offering back to the Lord for all the good He has done for you! A list of memorials can be found on the parish website or can be picked up in the parish office following New Year's Day. If you see anything you would like to memorialize, please call or stop in the parish office. Memorials are limited and granted on a first-come, first served basis and can be paid off with an installment plan. If you would like to sponsor a memorial, have any questions, or would like to discuss your giving possibilities, please call me at the parish office.

May the Lord be praised by our sacrifice and love for our new parish Church dedicated to the glory of God. Father Noesen - Pastor
