She struck a conversation. She said my mind is twisted. Would I kill a groundhog? And then as she persisted….

Beginning an inquiry, She commenced to dig. I’m sure she had concern, Would I kill her guinea pig?

She said, “My husband celebrates.” (Was there something up her sleeve?) She said, “It’s our tradition; We call it groundhog’s eve.”

With further explanation, She told me that it’s true. A group of people congregate. They go out and drink a few.

With her heart for little creatures, Then some light was shed, I said, “What about November?” “Where’s your turkey’s head?”

As she formulates a question, She looked rather funny. “Do you feast on reindeer meat? Would you eat the Easter bunny?”

Continuing the topic, I told her that it’s food. The question’s preparation, Is it barbequed or stewed?

You can bake a reindeer heart, Read valentines and laugh, Then if you feel dejected, You can chop the thing in half.

In March, I will go shopping, If all corned beef is gone, With shamrocks out of season, I’ll boil a leprechaun.

Money Talks

THE HOTTEST INVESTMENT TIPS

Have you ever received a really hot investment tip?

How many times has it actually worked out?

“Not-so-hot tips” can throw a kink in your long-term investment approach. Here are some sound tips for the long-term investor:

1. GET STARTED EARLY! -- It’s impossible to stress this point too much! Despite other financial pressures, this can often make the difference in reaching your goal. Historically, stock values appreciate in the long run so investing over longer periods can help your appreciation potential with managed risk.

2. ESTABLISH A REGULAR INVESTMENT PROGRAM -- Even experts cannot predict when prices are low and on the rise; therefore, the best strategy is to invest a set amount every month. Like any other investment, this approach cannot protect from loss or guarantee a profit, but it may help to lower the average cost of your investment purchases.

3. REINVEST RETURNS -- By reinvesting distributions from investments, you may be able to increase your account balance over the long term. Assuming a positive return on your investment, you will realize greater benefits from the power of compounding. This is the concept of earnings on earnings.

4. MAXIMIZE TAX-ADVANTAGED RETIREMENT PLANS -- If retirement is one of your objectives, be certain to invest in an employer-sponsored retirement plan if you are eligible. Most plans allow pre-tax contributions and tax-deferred account earnings. Don’t forget about IRAs either.

5. DON’T BE TOO “SAFE” DURING RETIREMENT -- When you retired, preservation of capital was a steadfast financial planning rule. However, because of inflation, you should be more concerned with preserving your spending power. To keep ahead of the game you must take inflation and taxes into account for the actual amount of your investment return. “Safe” investments could be a losing proposition if they offer no growth potential.

6. PREPARE FOR THE LONG HAUL -- Follow the plan. Don’t be tempted to over react to short-term market fluctuations. Chasing “hot” tips could damage your long-term plan.

7. SCHEDULE REGULAR PORTFOLIO CHECKUPS -- Your financial portfolio may need gradual adjustment as your lifestyle changes. You should review your holdings with your financial advisor at least once a year. If you have a major life change (e.g. marriage, baby, job change or early retirement), make an immediate appointment.

One of the more commonproblems with cats and kittensare ear mites. The infestationcauses the cat to scratch aroundthe ear and shake their headbecause ear mite infestationsoccur in the ear canal. I like toshow my clients what these bugsare like under the microscopebecauseitshedsawholenewlighton what the cat is experiencing.Withmoreadvancedinfestationsthe ear canal will bleed. If younotice a build up of material inyour cats’ ears, then your petprobably hasear mites.Ear mites arecommon, butleft untreatedcan damagethe ear canalsand ear drum.Ear mites canlive anywhere

on the cat’s body and spread todogs. Most types of mites donot survive very long off of thepets. Humans are not affected. For treatment of ear mitesI prefer to do a thorough earcleaning to begin with andthen prescribe an effectiveear mite medication to useat home. You can purchasecommercial products for earmite medications at stores but inmy opinion they are ineffective.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

Montana FFA and One Retro Tractor

Reprintedwithpermissionfrom“ThePrairieStar”WrittenbyTerriAdams,EditedbyEmilyBolles

Over the last few months FFA members have been selling raffle tickets, competing in district events and gearing up for the 2010 FFA State Convention. Local chapters will be traveling to spend the weekend competing in a variety of events including public speaking, parliamentary procedure, agronomy, judging and more. March 24-27 are the dates to circle on the calendar and MSU-Bozeman is the location. The event will host public speakers as well as numerous activities for FFA members. Also, this year the anticipation builds as a 2009 Holland Boomer 8N tractor will go to one lucky raffle ticket winner drawn during the convention! “It’s a sweet looking tractor,” said Sidwell. “It has the big wheels of the older tractors but all the modern conveniences.”

A Seed is Planted Ramey Lunceford, director of the Montana FFA organization, is excited about the raffle and what it means to the FFA. He is also thrilled with Torgerson’s LLC. Their Corporate sponsorship of Montana’s FFA organization has made the entire raffle possible. “Torgerson’s is providing the support for this program which is intended to raise funds for all Montana FFA members; it is not a for profit endeavor for their company” said Lunceford. Local chapters will receive $5 for every ticket they sell and the state foundation will receive the other $5. “Torgerson’s just really loved the idea that they could be helping every single FFA chapter in the state and the state foundation, too,” Lunceford explained. Dave Stinar, marketing support at Torgerson’s, said the idea came from one of their employees in Billings. “Audrey Walleser, a former FFA member and sales consultant of ours, came up with the idea,” said Stinar. They decided to offer a new tractor, one they knew would be a popular item. Noting the growing popularity for retro-looking equipment, they opted to go with the 8N Boomer. “We contacted Ramey and asked if the FFA would be interested. Ramey jumped in with both feet. Without Ramey’s active participation this opportunity would not have been the success that it has been,” said Stinar.

One of the biggest issues with charitable donations is that often foundations and organizations do not have the funds to advertise. “They can’t pay for marketing, tickets or anything else above and beyond. They can’t afford to get it around and let people see it is even available,” explained Stinar. Knowing that is often a challenge, Torgerson’s went one better than making the tractor available for this program. They also offered all

Page 17: February 17th, 2010

February 17, 2010 ................................................................. Volume VIII Issue 4 ............................................................................ Tricia’s Trader 17

the marketing materials the FFA would need to make this fundraiser truly successful. Torgerson’s provided advertising; billboards for the sides of the trailer; sponsored the FFA in a prime booth at the recent Montana Grain Growers Convention in Great Falls, Mont.; and even provided a trailer so that the FFA could move the tractor from event to event. Furthermore, the raffle was set up so even non ag producers could participate. If the winner of the raffle doesn’t want or need the tractor, they have the option of taking $25,000 in cash. Lunceford said that option has expanded the raffle to everyone. He is thrilled with Torgerson’s involvement with the FFA. “They are continuing to be an outstanding sponsor for us. They have put in a lot of time and a lot of resources. It is because of businesses like Torgerson’s that we are able to keep going. We would like to invite other businesses to take advantage of this opportunity to help the FFA as well,” Lunceford said.

FFA An Asset to Montana Communities Stinar sees the benefits for his company as being greater than dollars and cents. He sees that the real benefits are in the youth. “I was lucky enough to go down to one of their state contests last year and the quality of people the FFA is turning out is amazing,” he said. “But the thought that these kids will be taking all that skill and ability out of state is not a positive thing. We realize if we don’t promote and help support activities and programs like the FFA here at home, we will be losing more and more kids to out-of-state jobs and schools. If they are more vested to activities in Montana, then we hope, as a company, they will be more likely to stick around and give back and help out their own local ag communities.” Stinar pointed out that many family farms are dying, in part, because the youth are not excited about getting involved in agriculture. “Agriculture is the ground level, the foundation of Montana. If we can’t find ways to support and encourage them and give them better opportunities here, they won’t stick around,” he said. “But if we can do something like this to get them excited, to let them know that people are supporting them in agriculture, then it is worth it.” Together, Torgerson’s and the Montana State FFA Foundation are working to provide exciting opportunities for the youth of this state to grow and gain an education. Stinar commented, “Obviously, we’re a business but the key focus needs to be the FFA. If they win, then we win. This is turning into a fantastic opportunity for all of us. We are beyond pleased with the FFA director, Ramey Lunceford, and the local FFA chapters. They are stepping up to the plate and hitting home runs.” Contact an FFA member from the chapter in your area to get yourself a ticket! The drawing will be held during the FFA’s state convention.

SISTER MARY’S GASOLINESister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of

gas. As luck would have it, a Texaco gas station was just a block away.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned. Since Sister Mary Ann was on her way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked

back to her car.

She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two men watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other and said, “If that car starts, I’m turning Catholic.”

FROM THE MARKETING TOOLBOX:by Tricia Kimmel

Spring Spring is on its way - I know by the sudden rise in the numberof classifieds this issue for farm equipment.Farmers are itching to getout in the field, and baby animals are soon to arrive, if they haven’talready.High school basketball season is wrapping up, and the schoolyear’s almost to that 3/4 mark.In spite of the promise of warmer weathercoming, sometimes it’s hard to imagine it when you’re surrounded withmountains of snow.Yet, we all know spring will arrive. That’s sort of how I look at “branding”.(The marketing term, not the kind with hot irons and vaccine guns.)If you’ve branded yourselfwell, you can be assured that although your customer isn’t ready for youjust yet, they will think of you when they need you.Good brandingmeans your customers know you’re there for them, even though you’reburied under a big blanket of “snow”.

The subject of branding can take pages, even volumes, to explain. There areliterally thousands of ways to go aboutit. I won’t go into all of that here otherthan to remind you that it is extremelyimportant, and to spend some valuabletime considering the image you desire for

your company. How do you want people tothink of you?Whatever answer you come up with, infuse that into yourmarketing every step of the way. In closing, I’m going to tell you that if you missed our recent“Powerhouse Marketing Seminar for Small Montana Businesses” inHavre, you missed an important event.I was impressed with the widerange of businesses that attended and the large geographic area that wasrepresented. We’ve received wonderful feedback from those who werethere.Watch for next year’s seminar.Be sure to attend. You’ll be happyyou did.

Are you unsure of how to market your business? Do you run out of time to market because you’re too busy running your business? Kimmel Kreations, LLC offers customized “Marketing Modules” to lead you through the

marketing maze. We are the solution you need. 406.379.2377
