Salt for the Week
Following the letter of the law… It’s the way most of us have been raised. By the letter. Of the law. But it’s not really the way we live.
Jesus thought so too. The teaching this weekend from Matthew 5:17ff stretches us beyond the letter to the spirit—to our feelings and inclinations and not just what we “do.” Much of our present political turmoil rests between the letter (as in what’s “legal”) and the spirit (as in what is “moral” or “ethical”). Jesus knew that law was important, but not so important as to hide behind. The law allows many things, such as legal abortion, yet morally it is reprehensible. If our first response to a social problem is always the “legality” of it, maybe we need to re-read and pray about this gospel passage.
Lastly, Jesus reminds us that there is something worse than breaking the law—and that is teaching others to do so. We will be held accountable not only for our actions, but also how we influenced others for good or evil.
It’s more than only following the letter of the law.
Peace and all good.
LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash
Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.
We Apologize to Bob and Alice White for listing the wrong name for the Mass intention for February 15 for St. Joseph. The name should have been Sid and Grace White and family, not Whittle.

FUTURE WORSHIP SCHEDULES—As we continue to plan for the future and taking into account the increasing difficulty of getting priests to assist, please know that we will continue to do the best we can for worship and pastoral care. ASH WEDNESDAY is the end of this month (February 26), and after reviewing attendance from last year, it is apparent that later Mass times are more convenient for most parishioners. The 2020 Ash Wednesday schedule will be: 4:30 p.m.—St. Joseph Ash Wednesday Mass
and Ashes 6:00 p.m.—St. Mary Ash Wednesday Mass and Ashes 7:30 p.m.—St. Mark Ash Wednesday Mass and Ashes This schedule is consistent with our current Holyday Mass schedule at the three largest parishes. Remember to prioritize worshipping in one of the Emmaus Pastorate Parishes over just “getting it in” someplace. God blesses your sacrifice!
Catholic Charities Offers Many Services to Families—Did you know that Catholic Charities offers a diverse array of programs and services
throughout the Archdiocese of Dubuque, including mental health counseling, crisis pregnancy and post abortion counseling, affordable housing, immigration legal services, jail and prison ministry, mentoring and support for single parents, and disaster services? We ask you to consider supporting these services with your gift to the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal. Make your check payable to Catholic Charities. It can be put in your parish’s Sunday collection and the parish office will send it on to Catholic Charities. For more information, go to www.CatholicCharitiesDubuque.org.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit bless us with the qualities we need to truly live as disciples of Jesus Christ. If you’re a confirmed member of the Catholic Church, you have them! Most adults were confirmed at 11 or 12 years of
age, so it might have been a while since you’ve thought about your Confirmation and the gifts you were given. No worries. The Emmaus Pastorate RCIA program will be talking about the Sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Psalm Center of St. Mary Church in Strawberry Point. Join us! It might inspire you to live your spiritual gifts in a new way.
