SDSU's young CEM program has already made a lasting impact on the annual competition with numerous top three finishing teams for the past several years - what does this mean for the San Diego construction industry? If you're looking to the future of construction, there's a crop of bright students making their way into the industry. Through the continued support of AGC member firms and AGC's Construction Leadership Council (CLC), we will continue to attract the next generation to the construction industry, and keep them employed locally in a vibrant construction industry like no other in the country. The Reno Competition, formally known as the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Competition, running since the 1980's, is an intense team- building experience replicating real-world construction industry situations. Schools send their best students from across the Western United States to compete for trophies in 17 categories. Nearly 50 major collegiate construction programs were represented this year. To stand out amongst this group takes years of preparation from students present and past. The SDSU AGC Student Chapter, along with AGC's support, organized the teams, coordinated the preparations and planned the trip to Nevada - a management feat of its own. This year's student chapter Reno lead, John Harris, had a big hand in working with all teams and coordinating with AGC for a successful student experience. To help prepare the teams, the CLC hosted a series of "Mock Problems" that simulated the real stresses of working in a team, on a schedule, and presenting to a panel of no-nonsense judges. The 2016 CLC Chair, Geoff Acosta of Granite Construction Company, was instrumental in setting up the mock problems and additional trainings. He was also the go-to when it came to much needed tough love. We'd also like to thank Andrew Fluken, Erickson-

"Lean" Construction Growing in Popularity! In Canada...Eddie Sprecco, Chief Executive Officer Lean Construction is a hit. It'sbeen so popular, the class roster looks like the lyrics from the Johnny Cashsong "I've Been Everywhere" I've been to Littleton, Lakewood, Macon,Forsyth, Vegas, Mesa, Honolulu's so nice.... I've been everywhere, man... No joke, next month's course will have representatives from the followinglocales: Sacramento, CAPhoenix, AZ

News from the Safety Committee In an ongoing effort to update our members on the active discussions withinthe Safety Committee here at the AGC of San Diego, the following were someof the most recent highlights of what was discussed and reviewed during theFebruary 3rd Safety Committee meeting: Active Shooter Training: As many of you know, there have been instances inthe past year where San Diego construction sites have had a lock down due toa possible active shooter in the area. On behalf of J.P. Jonas & Associates, Lt.Allen Owens of the Escondido Police Department was able to share with thegroup valuable training and tools on what to do and not to do should youencounter an active shooter whether at your office, at the jobsite, or whereverthe unfortunate situation may present itself. Fall Hazards Remain #1: As many of you know, Fall Hazards remain thenumber one most cited offense by OSHA and for good reason as we see moreinjuries and fatalities related to this exposure than any others. This provedtrue in recent weeks with unfortunate injuries/fatality. Whether it is a man lift, scissor lift or simply working from height, it was a topic that was discussedonce again at length given its importance to continue to keep the training anddiscussion going with your staff as to hopefully prevent an unfortunate fall loss. We want to be heard: A constant in the construction industry is the everchanging legislative landscape. The group continues to get updates on thechanges or proposed changes being discussed in Sacramento as relates tosafety or compliance. Whether it is proposed lead changes, OSHA repeatoffense time periods, or transparency bills, we are reviewing and in somecases putting our opinion together to process to those that are directly involvedin the review. These changes can and have had a great effect on day to daybusiness, so being a part of it in representing the building community is critical.
