Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings First Sunday of Lent February 22, 2015

First reading: Genesis 9:8-15 Second reading: Saint Peter 3:18-22 Gospel: Mark 1:12-15 A reading from the Book of Genesis God said to Noah and to his sons with him: "See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth." God added: "This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings." A reading from the first Letter of Saint Peter Beloved: Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2015 God calls each of us by name to offer our time, talents, and treasure to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Everything we have is a gift from God, which we are called upon to share. When we give generously, our life is most like His. You are the one who can provide parishes and schools with the resources they need. Your gift can be the one that allows a priest to serve communities in need. It can help a school make essential repairs for the safety of their students. It can enable parishioners to have a place to celebrate Mass. The strength of the Church is not in numbers, but in love. Your contribution, large or small, is the one that matters. God bless you for your generous response and support to those in need.

Religious Education Office Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 Sunday’s Gospel, Reflecting in God’s Word. Not many things break the heart of a parent so quickly as seeing their child rejected by another person. Sometimes children are cruel and shun others or exclude them. Even more difficult are circumstances where adults or someone once trusted turn away from a child. Most of us don’t witness these acts in our lives personally, but we certainly read about them in the paper or hear about them on the news. We get just a small glimpse of what it might have been like for the leper in today’s Gospel who was not even allowed to live with healthy people. We also better understand the courage and compassion of Jesus who touched the man and accepted him. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Try to think of people your family knows (or knows about) who are ostracized by society. Maybe there is someone at school whose clothes are more worn out or dirtier than everyone else’s. Maybe there’s someone at work whose odd behavior prevents him or her from being accepted. In our communities there are those who don’t fit the norm or perhaps they are single parents, unemployed, sick, or living away from home either in prison, foster homes, or hospitals. Come up with some ways that as a family you can reach out to these people just as Jesus reached out to the leper. What can you do to show the same compassion Jesus showed? Question of the Week: Child: What can you do this week to be an example to others?

Adult: Would you have the courage to tell others to do as you do in order to be Christian?

Help prevent child victimization Many assume that children at risk for victimization are neglected or from dysfunctional homes. However, all children, even those from supportive families, may be at risk of victimization. Encourage your child to come to you immediately if anyone makes him or her feel uncomfortable online or makes overtures to meet in person. These are some signs an online predator may be connecting with your child: Your child becomes withdrawn and isolated from family and friends; you find inappropriate material on the computer; your child receives mail, money, or gifts from unknown people; you see unknown phone numbers when reviewing the phone bill. For more information visit: http://www.netsmartz.org/ChildrenAsVictims.

DID YOU KNOW?

February 18th is the beginning of the Forty Days of Lent which join us more fully to the passion, death and rising of Christ. Lent prepares us for a more joyful celebration of the Fifty Days of Easter. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday is a day of penitential observance which includes fasting and abstinence. This is intended to connect us with the need to discipline our bodies and minds and to develop our attitude of gratitude and charity towards others. Lent is good for our souls. The word Lent means, “Spring”. What is “fasting” specifically? Fasting is consuming no more than one meal per day, along with two smaller repasts which, when combined, are not larger than the main meal. Who is required to fast during Lent? Adult Catholics from the age of 18 through 59 are required to fast, unless of course prohibited by medical or physical reason.(Cannon 1252) In Lent, who has to abstain from meat? Catholics from age 14 and up are to abstain from meat on days of abstinence. (Cannon 1252) When are the days of fasting and abstinence? The days of fasting are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The days of abstinence are the two just mentioned along with each Friday in Lent. What counts as meat? Food is considered meat if it comes, from an animal that walks on land. This includes mammals and fowl. Crab? Not meat. Pork and chicken? Meat. So, is this the time to feast on lobster? In the spirit of Lent, having a seafood feast on Fridays is not in keeping with the idea of penance. All Fridays throughout the year are still days of penitential observance for Catholics. It is only during Lent that the Church ask us to be united as a community in the same form of penance. The rest of the year, we can choose how to observe this spiritual discipline.

HOLY WATER FONTS The Holy Water Fonts in the church will be empty and covered with purple cloth during Lent. The reason for this is that we begin a “Desert” experience when we begin the season of Lent. The Holy Water used to bless ourselves when coming into church is a sign of the renewal of our Baptismal promises. During Lent we journey through the “Desert”, reflecting, meditating and preparing ourselves for the approaching celebration of the Resurrection when our Lord rises from the grave, we too rise with him, renewing our Baptismal promises to New Life. This is “rich in symbolism” that we journey with Christ in the desert and rise again with him on Easter Sunday, a “Resurrected People”.

Are you searching for a community? Interested in the Catholic Faith?

Do you have questions about Jesus, the Resurrection, the Eucharist, and the Church? Do you think you might like to look into the Catholic way of life?

Sessions are held on Sundays at 9:30 am to 11:30 am in Laboure Center.

Please continue to pray for our Catechumens and Candidates as they journey towards receiving the

sacraments. If you are interested and want to know more, please call Roy Ramirez at 562-879-9478 or email [email protected] and an application will be forwarded to you. You can see current information at: www.facebook.com/OlmmRCIA.

All are welcome!

We are working on a wonderful design which will show to the world and generations to come, our pride for OLMM. We are recommending a donation of between $100 and $250 dollars per brick. Let’s all honor our One Parish, One Family Community of the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

Please come by the rectory to pick up an application for the engraved Personalized Brick. We thank you in advance for your generous donation.
