Pope Francis: ‘Lent is a favourable time for conversion.’ Works of Mercy

God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that “the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy” (ibid., 15). For in the poor, the flesh of Christ “becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us” (ibid.). It is the unprecedented and scandalous mystery of the extension in time of the suffering of the Innocent Lamb, the burning bush of gratuitous love. Before this love, we can, like Moses, take off our sandals (cf. Ex 3:5), especially when the poor are our brothers or sisters in Christ who are suffering for their faith.

Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favorable a time for conversion! We ask this through the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, who, encountering the greatness of God’s mercy freely bestowed upon her, was the first to acknowledge her lowliness (cf. Lk 1:48) and to call herself the Lord’s humble servant (cf. Lk 1:38).

Las obras de misericordia

La misericordia de Dios transforma el corazón del hombre haciéndole experimentar un amor fiel, y lo hace a su vez capaz de misericordia. Es siempre un milagro el que la misericordia divina se irradie en la vida de cada uno de nosotros, impulsándonos a amar al prójimo y animándonos a vivir lo que la tradición de la Iglesia llama las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales. Ellas nos recuerdan que nuestra fe se traduce en gestos concretos y cotidianos, destinados a ayudar a nuestro prójimo en el cuerpo y en el espíritu, y sobre los que seremos juzgados: nutrirlo, visitarlo, consolarlo y educarlo. Por eso, expresé mi deseo de que «el pueblo cristiano reflexione durante el Jubileo sobre las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales. Será un modo para despertar nuestra conciencia, muchas veces aletargada ante el drama de la pobreza, y para entrar todavía más en el corazón del Evangelio, donde los pobres son los privilegiados de la misericordia divina» (ibíd., 15). En el pobre, en efecto, la carne de Cristo «se hace de nuevo visible como cuerpo martirizado, llagado, flagelado, desnutrido, en fuga... para que nosotros lo reconozcamos, lo toquemos y lo asistamos con cuidado» (ibíd.). Misterio inaudito y escandaloso la continuación en la historia del sufrimiento del Cordero Inocente, zarza ardiente de amor gratuito ante el cual, como Moisés, sólo podemos quitarnos las sandalias (cf. Ex 3,5); más aún cuando el pobre es el hermano o la hermana en Cristo que sufren a causa de su fe.

No perdamos este tiempo de Cuaresma favorable para la conversión. Lo pedimos por la intercesión materna de la Virgen María, que fue la primera que, frente a la grandeza de la misericordia divina que recibió gratuitamente, confesó su propia pequeñez (cf. Lc1,48), reconociéndose como la humilde esclava del Señor (cf. Lc 1,38).

Renew My Church Archbishop Cupich has written a column in the Catholic New World and Católico on the Archdiocesan planning process. “Renew My Church” is an archdiocese-wide process to strengthen parish vitality for the long-term future. This process will continue over the coming months and years and will be carried out in wide consultation with the clergy and laity. The Archbishop’s article was published in the February 7 issue of the Catholic New World which will arrive in subscribers’ homes this week, and also may be found on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website, www.archchicago.org, in English, Spanish and Polish.

Knights of Columbus Annual Spelling Bee

The Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, February 18th in the community room. It is open to all boys and girls who have not passed the 8th grade before the council contest and will not pass their 16th birthday before the state final in April 2016. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the contest will commence at 7:00 p.m. The top three winners will progress to the Regional contest in March. Regional winners will participate in the state finals in April.
