My Brothers and Sisters, To follow Jesus means that wherever we are in life we meet Him, we meet Him in the scriptures, we walk with Him. We tie our life-journey to his. In today’s Gospel passage, we journey with him into the desert. We struggle against the devil, side by side with Jesus, overcoming our own temptations. The Church helps us do this by giving us ways to improve our self-discipline and conquer our self-centeredness through practices of prayer and self-denial: fasting and abstinence, alms-giving and reconciliation. Every meal and meat given up for Lent, and every sin we confess in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and every sacrifice of time we make for extra prayer is our own desert experience. Jesus fasted from food and other physical comforts during his battle with the devil, and the battle purified him and strengthened him for the ministry that came afterward. If we want to follow Jesus, we battle the devil, too, and we too are purified and strengthened by the struggle. There are no spectators here, only participants. Satan is not someone to fear. Jesus already defeated all demons on our behalf, first in the desert and then on the cross. Our battle is really only against temptation and our personal desire to give in to it. We don't always want to follow Jesus. This is what we must surrender to God during Lent. Then we, too, will be purified and strengthened by the struggle. May this Lent be a joyously happy and holy season of true growth in the Lord Jesus. Just a reminder that we abstain from meat all Fridays of Lent. It is a simple way to show ourselves and Jesus that we are serious about following Him. If we are faithful in small matters, we will also be faithful in greater matters. I also invite everyone to daily Mass as a wonderful way to start the day. I invite you to come to Stations of the Cross and our Lenten Soup Dinner on Fridays during Lent. The stations are a wonderful spiritual exercise that help us to follow Jesus more concretely.

Reflections by Fr. Carlos

Dear Brothers and Sisters, In today's Gospel we see Jesus' temptations. We should not be frightened or angry with temptation for even the Lord Himself was tempted! The problem itself is not having temptations, but the manner in which many times we face them. Many spiritual masters say that temptation is an opportunity to grow spiritually. Jesus gives us a clear example of how to face any kind of temptation: not to dialogue with it and cut it off. Often we fall into temptations because we dialogue with them like Eve did before the Original Sin. When a temptation comes before us we should not be scared or get angry because that may be the beginning of defeat. Thoughts such as; Why me? The same thing again? I continue to be a great sinner, etc., are ways of dialoging with it. The best thing is to do what Christ did. Cut them off with thoughts like these: This issue does not interest me, I better do something else, etc, and try to do a different activity opposite of the temtation. In this way they lose their strength in our heads. God bless your week.

Youth Ministry News

For those of you who do not know, every year the archdiocese has all those who teach in religious education, confirmation/youth ministry, and catholic schools do a Virtus night for teens called “Seeing, Touching, Safety”. It is required to have this class once a year and is essentially a safety class for minors interacting with adults and those around them. Every year there is a different topic to be covered and can be anything from internet safety to what most refer to as “Safe Touch”. As you can imagine, teenagers are usually not too excited about this class and have a tendency to be bored or even a little uncomfortable depending on the topic. So how do we get through to them? Well for one, we have to be creative. If your just lecturing to teens their minds shut off very quickly, especially on a school day when they have already been lectured all day long. So rather than just lecture, we get creative using clips from popular movies or memes from social media to connect with our teens. Second, and most importantly, we are very real with our teens. One thing I have learned from being involved in ministry since I was a teen is that if you are not real with teens, they could care less about what you have to say. So, how do you talk to your teens about safety issues? I promise you your teens will respect you more if you are straight forward with them and find creative ways to talk about these issues with them. The key is talking WITH your teens and not AT your teens.

WORDS OF WISDOM…

“Love is shown in your deeds, not in your words.” ~Fr. Jerome Cummings

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday

Friday 9 a.m. — Saturday 8:30 a.m.

Prayer is nothing else than union with God. When one’s heart is pure and united to God, that person feels within himself a joy, a sweetness that intoxicates, a light that dazzles. In this intimate union of prayer, God and the soul are like two pieces of wax melted together; they cannot be separated.

(St. John Vianney)

We need committed Adorers on Friday at 11AM and 12Noon. Please call Rachel 659-3785. This week’s vocal Holy Hour in English @ 7p.m. is for Vocations.

No siempre queremos seguir a Jesús.

Dios bendiga tu semana.
