Good News Reflection 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 11, 2018

Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 Ps 32:7, 1-2, 5, 11 1 Corinthians 10:31--11:1 Mark 1:40-45

For the glory of God This Sunday's second reading gives us a great motto that we should post on our bed-room mirrors so that it's the first thing we see as our sleepy eyes awaken each morning: "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God."

Everything! Brush your teeth for the glory of God. Kiss your family "Good morning!" for the glory of God. Go to Mass for the glory of God (in other words, we don't go to church just for what we can get out of it). Do your work for the glory of God. Drive politely for the glory of God. Shop and eat and greet others for the glory of God. Say yes to the needs of the Church for the glory of God. And receive all that he wants to give you (the compliments, the money you earn, the answered prayers, the good times and rewards) all for the glory of God.

This should be part of our daily prayers every morning: "Holy Spirit, help me to do everything today for the glory of God. Amen!"

By making it a daily habit to start the day this way, the glory of God becomes integrated into our character. When we remember to see our activities through the lens of "whatever you do, do it for the glory of God", we become stronger in avoiding all kinds of sins. It sanctifies each moment of every day.

Often, we see religious activities as separate from our normal activities. We take "time out" from our schedules to go to church. We stop what we're doing when we want to pray. We think that only Clergy and Religious can be religious all of the time and that a layperson who is like that is a "fanatic". But why?

Why should we limit "for the glory of God" to only what is "holy" -- Mass attendance, religious rituals, prayers, the works of ministry, etc.? We can sanctify every moment by remembering that whatever we do, we want to please God with it.

Questions for Personal Reflection: What have you done already today that glorifies God? What is planned for later today and how can that be of-fered to God? What will you do to remind yourself daily to do everything for the glory of God?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Describe ways that we can glorify God in normal, everyday activities. How do you turn mundane tasks into a gift for God? When is it most difficult to glorify him? How can even our lapses into sin become blessings that glorify God?

Good News Reflection 6to. Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Febrero 11, 2018

Para la gloria de Dios La lectura de este segundo domingo nos da un gran lema que deberíamos poner en los espejos de nuestras hab-itaciones para que sea la primera cosa que veamos con nuestros ojos recién abiertos cada mañana: "Hagas lo que hagas, hazlo para la gloria de Dios."

¡Todo! Cepíllate los dientes para la gloria de Dios. Di "¡Buen día!" a tu familia con un beso, para la gloria de Dios. Ve a Misa para la gloria de Dios (en otras palabras, no vamos a la iglesia por lo que podemos obtener). Haz tu trabajo para la gloria de Dios. Maneja amablemente para la gloria de Dios. Haz las compras y come y saluda a los demás para la gloria de Dios. Di sí a las necesidades de la Iglesia para la gloria de Dios. Y recibe todo lo que Él quiere darte (los halagos, el dinero que ganas, las oraciones contestadas, los buenos momentos y recompensas), todo para la gloria de Dios.

Esto debería ser parte de tus oraciones diaria cada mañana: "Espíritu Santo, ayúdame a hacer todo hoy para la gloria de Dios. ¡Amén!"

Al hacer un hábito diario el comenzar el día así, la gloria de Dios se integra a tu carácter. A menudo vemos nuestras actividades religiosas como separadas de nuestras actividades normales. Nos toma-mos un "tiempo fuera" de nuestros compromisos para ir a la iglesia. Dejamos de hacer lo que estamos hacien-do cuando deseamos orar. Pensamos que solamente los Clérigos y los Religiosos pueden ser religiosos todo el tiempo y que los laicos que son así son "fanáticos". Pero ¿por qué?

¿Por qué deberíamos limitar "para la gloria de Dios" solamente lo que es "santo" – asistir a misa, rituales relig-iosos, oraciones, los trabajos del ministerio, etc.? Podemos santificar cada momento recordando que con todo lo que hagamos podemos agradar a Dios.

Preguntas para la Reflexión Personal: ¿Qué has hecho ya hoy que glorifica a Dios? ¿Qué has planeado para más tarde hoy, y cómo puede ser ofre-cido a Dios? ¿Qué harás para recordarte diariamente, hacer todo para la gloria de Dios?

Preguntas para Compartir la Fe en Comunidad: Describe formas en que podemos glorificar a Dios en nuestras actividades normales diarias. ¿Cómo cambias tareas mundanas en obsequios para Dios? ¿Cuándo es más difícil glorificarlo? ¿Cómo pueden incluso nuestras caídas en pecado, transformarse en bendiciones que glorifiquen a Dios?

February 14th, Ash Wednesday, is the first day of the 40 Days of

Lent. This is In keeping with our Knights of Columbus mission to

feed the hungry. During Lent, we recall the sacrifices our Lord

made for us by making sacrifices of our own. This campaign asks us

all to make our own sacrifice by putting aside one can of food

every day during the 40 days of Lent to feed the hungry.

The Knights will have barrels at the entrances where you can place

the cans as you enter. Please contribute your part to reach our

goal. Food donated will go to the Linn Benton Food Bank and cash

donations will go to St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen.

Make sure you make the checks payable to “St Mary’s Soup Kitch-

en,” then put in an envelope marked for 40 Cans for Lent. Put the

envelope in the donation basket, give it to a Knight or mail it to

St. Mary’s Church office.

40 Days for Life - From February 14 to March 25, our community will take part in 40 Days for Life … a

groundbreaking, coordinated international mobilization. We pray that, with God’s help, this will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city — and beyond. The goal is to have someone outside the three abortion clinics (Portland, Salem and Eugene) each day of Lent. https://40daysforlife.com/

The Knights of Columbus plan to stand together and pray outside the clinic in Salem on Friday afternoons from 1 to 2pm starting February 16th. We would like to have parish members join by carpooling with us to the Salem Clinic at 3825 Wolverine Street NE, Salem, Oregon. We will meet up at 12:00 at our parish parking lot and carpool to the site. We will have Right to Life signs that we can provide. Please find a way to join in. Notes from the Liturgist

To Whom Will You Give Your Heart?

This week we are going to enter a new season of the Church Liturgical Year, the Lenten Season. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The Lenten Season is a time of prayer and fasting and giving (prayer, fasting, and almsgiving). Through these Lenten practices, Christians are urged to repent from sins and anticipate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. When we receive ashes on our foreheads, we hear the reminder: “Repent and Believe in the Gospel” OR “Turn away from Sin and Believe in the Gospel” OR “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” as a reminder of individual mortality.

The season of Lent is technically 40 days long, but the number of days between Ash Wednesday and Easter is 46. The Sundays of Lent are technically memorial of Christ’s resurrection. Abstinence and fasting are not practiced on Sundays of Lent because each Sunday is a “Mini-Easter”.

During the Lenten Season, we pray the Stations of the Cross. It is a devotional prayer where we commemorate and meditate on the trial, torture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It originated in pilgrimages to Jerusalem. It desires to follow the Via Dolorosa.

Interestingly, both Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall on the same day this year. They are not related. Due to this coinci-dence, it is easy to ask this question: “To whom do we give our hearts?”

The heart is often used as a metaphor for the core or center representing the whole of the person. We hear in the readings on the first day of Lent (Ash Wednesday), it’s all about God’s invitation to go back in loving relationship with Him. Yes, He is always ready to welcome us. He wants us to hear his voice of mercy and be reconciled with him, to give our hearts to him.

On this day of hearts and as we begin the season of Lent, we ask ourselves: “To whom do we give our hearts? Can we give our hearts back to God?”

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Our Lady of Lourdes – February 11

“Lourdes, where non-Catholics imagine that we accord Mary undue eminency is no doubt that place in the world where Christ in the Eucharist is most glorified. It is the only place in the world where, under the veil of the Host, Christ mingles in the midst of so many sick people and is as closely pressed by them as He was during His mortal life. His mother prays for these bodies and these souls, and Christ cures them. The procession of the Blessed Sacrament in Lourdes starts from the Grotto to show that Jesus was given to us by the Virgin. And she who stood on Golgotha, at the foot of the cross of a condemned man, stands here by the side of the King of eternal glory.” (Holy Thursday, Francois Mauriac) Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

¿A quién le darás tu corazón? Esta semana vamos a entrar en una nueva temporada del Año Litúrgico de la Iglesia, la Temporada de Cuaresma. Comienza el Miérco-les de Ceniza y termina el Sábado Santo. (Sábado de Gloria) La tempo-rada de Cuaresma es un tiempo de oración, ayuno y ofrenda (oración, ayuno y limosna). A través de estas prácticas de Cuaresma, los cristia-nos son instados a arrepentirse de los pecados y anticipar la Resurrec-ción de Jesucristo. Cuando recibimos la ceniza en nuestra frente, escuchamos la frase recordatoria que dice: "Arrepiéntete y cree en el Evangelio" O "Apártate del pecado y cree en el Evangelio" O "Recuerda que eres polvo, y al polvo volverás" como un recordatorio de la mortali-dad individual.

La temporada de Cuaresma es técnicamente de 40 días, pero el número de días entre el Miércoles de Ceniza y la Pascua es de 46. Los Domingos de Cuaresma son técnicamente conmemorativos de la resurrección de Cristo. La abstinencia y el ayuno no se practican los Domingos de Cuaresma porque cada Domingo es una "Mini-Pascua".
