The day aſter the drawing, when we discovered we did not win, there were no long faces or stories of disappointment. There was only excited chaer up and down the hallway because we had shared a moment of community that was fun. I think about all the people throughout our city who are desperately in need of community and joy. And though the moment of fun offered by buying a cket to the loery is ephemeral, what the church has to offer is not. We too are a people who have pooled our resources as part of a dream. The difference in our joyful community is there is nothing fleeng about it. We gather together because the great prize has already been won. The good news of God’s love, given to us through Jesus Christ, is certain and assured. And the prize cannot be squandered – God’s love for each of us is unshak- able. No wonder we feel compelled to come together every week, to gather in God’s name and joyful proclaim the good news. Truly, the church is the ulmate place of shared community, excitement and expectaon. Thanks be to God!

Recently, the payout for the Power Ball lottery soared well over a billion dollars. Lottery mania swept the nation. I spoke to many people from St. Luke’s who were participating in lottery pools at work. In many offices groups of people all agreed to contribute into a community investment fund, of sorts, to purchase blocks of tickets. In truth, the chance of winning the lottery was shockingly small: 1 in 292,000,000. Or, roughly the same odds you would have if you tried to guess one person out of the entire population of the United States.

But tickets purchased in an office pool are not really (for most of us) bought with an expectation of winning. I know this because I contributed to our of-fice pool. I didn’t expect to win, but the benefits of the office pool were not in the probability of winning but instead in the community we shared. No wonder we feel compelled to come together every week, to gather in God’s name and joyful proclaim the good news. Truly, the church is the ultimate place of shared community, excitement and expectation. Thanks be to God!

Here, Together in the Grace of God, Go WeA Luncheon Program for All Women at St. Luke’s

Wednesday, Feb. 3 | Noon | $5“There, but for the grace of God, go I” is something that most of us have said or thought at one time or another. During this women’s lunch, Ellen Ott Marshall, St. Luke’s parishioner and professor at Candler School of Theology, will examine this familiar saying and the problematic notions it conveys about God’s grace. We will then consider an alter-native and the difference this alternative might make in our responses to God and neighbor, especially in times of vul-nerability and loss. RSVP online or by phone (404-873-7777).

Couplehood as a Spiritual Path | Linda and Louis McLeod Jan 31, Feb 7, 14We were created to be in relationship and we know how difficult it can sometimes be to embody love in our committed love relation-ships or marriages. This class will look at some of the reasons it is so easy to become disconnected from our partner and ways to intentionally enhance the connection and joy we desire. This class is taught by Linda and Louis McLeod who have presented work-shops for couples for the past 24 years.

Good Old Fashioned Bible Study | Parkins Room |WeeklyThat you May Believe: The Gospel of John - Join us as we explore this gospel’s spiritually attuned, stunningly beautiful insights into the nature of Jesus and the meaning of faith. Continues weekly through the spring.

Adult Inquirer’s Class|The Rev. Dan Matthews begins Sunday, Feb 7This class is intended for adults who are seeking to explore and deepen their faith by preparing for adult Confirmation and/or Bap-tism, which will be held at St. Luke’s on May 10. Other prospective members of St. Luke’s, newcomers with questions and even long-time parishioners interested in a “refresher” are also welcome to attend.

Examen[ing] our Relationship to Food | Audrey Hindes Feb 14, 21Examen is a spiritual practice of finding God in our daily lives. In this two-part series, we will practice this ancient form of prayer to gain greater discernment in our relationship to food. Over time, we can learn to approach our cooking and eating habits with a spirituality that carries over into the rest of our lives.

Lent thru Lens: Mind, Body and Spirit|The Rev. Dennis PattersonFeb 14, 21, 28, March 13 Using the Gospel lessons for each Sunday during Lent, partici-pants will read scriptures and offer interpretations of the reading through their own documentary photography. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn basic camera techniques. All levels of “camera users” are welcome.

Healthy Living/Holy Lent: Exercising in Place - Why and How Early and Medieval Christian Practices Still Help us ThriveBobbi Patterson | Feb 28Exploring the connections between life-style choices and con-text or place, early Christian communities developed “exercise regimes” for healthy living rooted in a range of activities from gardening, to walking, to prayer. Medieval teachers, like Teresa of Avila, built on these “workouts” broadening exercise types and intentions. This session will explore various “exercise re-gimes” worthy of contemporary commitment (yours and mine) to faith-bearing health.

Stories of Recovery | Shane Phillips and Mary Ann Phillips March 6Come and hear one family’s story of addiction and recovery. Shane Phillips, a St. Luke’s parishioner in long-term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, will share his story of recovery and discuss how addiction affects people from all walks of life. His mother, parishioner Mary Ann Phillips, will also be present to par-ticipate in a Q & A about the process of family recovery. Come to learn more about addiction, recovery, and what you can do to cre-ate recovery-friendly environments within St. Luke’s and beyond.

Forgiveness, Resurrection, and the End of Retribution March 13Beginning with Rowan William’s understanding of the connec-tion between the first proclamation of forgiveness given by the disciples in Acts 2, this class will explore the power of the offer of forgiveness in ending the cycles of violence that have plagued humanity for millenia. In it, we will examine the reality of forgive-ness amid violence and horrific offenses and the difficulty of rec-onciling Christ’s radical posture of forgiveness with the demands of justice. In addition to Rowan Williams, this class will draw upon the writings of Miroslav Volf, James Cone and Jurgen Moltmann to determine both the personal and societal benefits (and possible dangers) of a commitment to forgiveness.
