Note

red india AD

In this tough economic climate, I am saddened on a daily basis when I see headlines about poverty, home foreclosures, and bankruptcies. However, in the midst of this dour landscape, we have a bright spot on the horizon: Valentine’s Day.

Now, I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day because of the flowers (I’m allergic!) or the chocolates (Too many carbs!). I am a Valentines aficionado because of the special jadoo that this day brings to people’s hearts. Whether it’s a romantic partner or a lifelong friend, I hope all of you will go out and tell that special someone that you love them. After all, we spend all year being consumed with kids, crazy careers, and stressful commitments—surely we can take one day out to thank love? It is love which makes us wake up in the morning, and it is love that fuels us through the day, and that, my friends, is truly priceless.

Speaking of love, I’d also like to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for my fellow magazine staff members Raj Shinde and Ali Fazal—Actually, it’s not Thanksgiving, so I don’t really need to thank anyone—but nonetheless, these guys are truly committed to giving you readers the best possible product and I think we can all spare a little love for them because of that. We also pride ourselves on having the most amazing, dedicated contributors in the publishing world—so they deserve some love as well. Last but not least, we love you. We value your feedback. We make the magazine for the readers, and your opinions are very important to us. Thus, feel free to let us know what you think!

Before I get too mushy, there is also a special recognition that needs to be given this month. Many hearty congratulations to Danny Boyle and the whole cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire for winning the Golden Globe award for Best Picture! As someone who works for media, it is rare for me to find a film which connects to people of all ethnicities, but whose values remain intrinsically desi. The principles that Slumdog Millionaire promotes—not giving up on dreams, fighting for what you believe in, and prevailing above all adversity—are ideologies that we should all strive to incorporate in our day to day lives.

Until next month, I implore you to live like Jamal from Slumdog Millionaire, and pursue your passions relentlessly. This is a short life that we have, and I think we should all try and make the best of it. With Valentine’s Day approaching, maybe we should take some time out on February 14th and just be. No distractions. No stress. No commitments. Just time to break bread and enjoy with loved ones. After all, isn’t that what life is all about?

I leave you with this quote from one of the greatest thinkers of our time, Allan Chalmers:“The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.”

I pray that this month, we all take Mr. Chalmers’ advice to heart and truly live, laugh, and love.

Till next time,

Monicca Sharmaa

Finding the right Valentine's Day gift is probably the most difficult shopping experience in any man's life. It isn't like buying a birthday gift -- choosing a gift for this special occasion won't just show your affection toward her, but your degree of commitment as well.

The nature of the Valentine's Day gift can reflect how much you care, or don't care, about her. The meaning of your gift also varies according to the seriousness and the type of relationship you're in. So, we've put together a great list of Valentine's Day gift ideas, depending on your particular relationship level.

Getting a dateYou’ve gone out with her a few times, the level of commitment is low, and you’re simply having a lot of fun. What do you buy her? This situation is the trickiest of them all because the wrong gift can take the relationship from casual dating to a full-fledged commitment.

8 pc. Gold Ballotin ChocolatesChocolates are a great non-committal gift. These particular chocolates emit class, style, and (of course) they taste great. Everybody loves a sweet treat, and this box of chocolates has a plethora of tastes, so you’re sure to get rave reviews.

FlowersWhile a bouquet of red roses may be a bit overzealous for a first date, other flowers may send your message perfectly. Do some research and choose carefully; gardenias denote secret love, orchids are always lovely, showing beauty and refinement, while yellow roses mean friendship. Just be sure to order your flowers early because Valentine’s Day can be a busy time for this industry!

Women generally appreciate that you spent some time selecting a gift. So it’s a good idea to listen to what she says, pick up on a hint she may mention in passing, and then surprise her with it.

Good luck!

Be my Valentine!

Hot Picks!

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grand Reveil WatchPrice: $24,750Official Site: Jaeger-LeCoultre.comAn 18 kt pink gold case houses the mechanical self-winding movement of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grand Reveil watch, and offers a decidedly different take on what a man’s watch can be. The requisite high-end elements are here, of course. The crocodile leather strap with a folding closure clasp (custom fit by your jeweler) and the perpetual calendar with day, date and moon phase functions all seem to be de rigueur, but this watch has something more. In addition to the mechanical movement, there is also an alarm function.

Rolex Submariner 6536/1Price: $20,000Official Site: Rolex.com (Also available at Govindji’s in Richardson, TX)Sean Connery’s Bond came by his Rolex Submariner more out of film budget circumstances than being true to his character. In fact, Ian Fleming’s literary incarnation of Bond wore a Rolex vaguely described and matching that of a stainless steel Oyster Perpetual. As the story goes, the production company that brought us Dr. No, the first Bond film, did not have enough money to buy a Rolex for Sean Connery to wear, and Rolex refused to provide one at no charge. However, the film’s producer, Cubby Broccoli, and the mastermind behind what would become the Bond film franchise stepped up and removed the Rolex Submariner on his own wrist and handed it to Connery just before filming began. This particular Submariner had a black strap and is most noticeable when Bond meets Honey Ryder on Crab Key and the two hide in the saltwater marshes from Dr. No’s henchmen. This first use of a Rolex on film by Bond is fairly simple and devoid of any high-tech gadgetry. Like all models before it, the case is stainless steel with a simple bezel and no date function.

Clarion MiNDPrice: $649.99Official Site: www.Clarion.comSpecs: 512MB RAM; 4GB SSD flash memory; Bluetooth; USB 2.0; MicroSD card; 11.4 ozNo doubt about it -- Clarion is one of the biggest names in car and nautical entertainment systems, and in recent years the company has branched out into navigation and remote starters. Now, the Clarion MiND shows that the company is moving in yet another new direction. The gadget is billed as a “Mobile Internet Navigation Device,” which essentially means that it’s a collection of a few satnav and cool mobile media technologies cobbled together and packaged for the dashboard.

Lenovo Ideacentre A600Price: Starts at $999Official Site: Lenovo.comSpecs: Intel Core 2 Duo; 4-in-1 remote; VOIP; all-in-one; HDTVLenovo’s forthcoming IdeaCentre A600 all-in-one looks like Darth Vader’s own iMac. The slick black machine has style and cool to spare, and the optional four-in-one remote functions as a regular remote, an air mouse, a Wii-style game controller, and -- get this -- a wireless VOIP phone. The Lenovo Ideacentre A600 is full of thoughtful design choices, like side-mounted USB and FireWire ports, and slots for multiple kinds of memory cards. However, the ho-hum base-model stats and excessive options will likely drive the price sky-high for a legitimately cool machine.

Hot Picks for Men! Men’s FashionSpring Trends to look forward toI know some people might think that this month’s column might be mis-titled. After all, this is the February issue—the question of spring trends shouldn’t even be addressed for another three months, right?

Well, if we lived in any other locale, that logic would probably hold up. However, since Texas is our home, it’s about time that we face facts and accept that ‘winter’ in Texas isn’t a season; it’s practically a blip on the radar. Come March, temperatures will inevitably start soaring, and those bulky sweaters will be refined to the dusty attic where they will stay cozy for the next nine months. In preparation for this rapid change in temperature which is being predicted by leading weather forecasters, Salaam Namaste’s Ali Fazal gives you tips on how to stay trendy this spring—without breaking the bank.

Spring ColorsNow, I know the urge this spring will be to remain somber (especially given our country’s dire economic situation), but spring means color! This spring, the hot colors are expected to be lemon yellow, bright pink, and red. Now I know some of these colors might seem loud to you, but spring, according to our resident Vedic Swami Krsna, is the season to be noticed! On South Asian skin coloring especially, these bright colors won’t look loud and tacky, but instead vibrant and youthful.

Spring accessoriesWith Texas springs, one must always be aware of the fact that wind might take over at any time. For this very reason, it appears that light scarves will be the accessory du jour for the spring season. Those heavy musty wool scarves can stay buried in the wardrobe come March. For spring, light airy scarves in colors like sky blue, white, and tan are what’s needed to really punctuate a fun look.

Spring denimNow that winter is slowly fading away, all those chunky corduroys and other ‘cold weather’ pants can take a hike! In spring, denim needs to be fun and fitted. Don’t hesitate to try different washes of denim—it’ll only add to your individual style. Stay away from very light blue denim though, as this shade is extremely unflattering with the spring color palette. In addition, try and avoid denim washes with holes and frays—the worn, beachy look is totally over.

Fashion opposites for SpringDon’t get confused. For every trend you’re going to see an “equal and opposite” fashion partner. You really have to pay attention to your own age, body type, lifestyle, and workplace to figure out which of the trends is really appropriate for you.

Remember, you can’t wear it all together. You have to pick one! Choose the trend that works for you and not against you. Whatever you choose, you’ll still be trendy and show off your own personal style with great freedom!

THe Mini Dress Vs. THe MaXi Dress

MINI: Dresses are a huge trend. There's no rule on lengths this season, so you'll see tons of varying hemlines... If you have great legs and it's appropriate for you to wear a mini, then this is the dress for you. However if you're aged 35 or above, it's a tad inappropriate to wear a mini dress, especially to the workplace.

MAXI: Lots of the maxi length dresses are coming in halters, spaghetti straps, etc. The emphasis is on the top half and can help hide a heavier waistline. Now, if you're 5'4" or below, a maxi dress may overwhelm you. Most maxi dresses are more for a weekend casual evening out and not quite tailored enough to wear to the workplace.

flaTs Vs. super HigH Heels:

FLATS: You're going to see all kinds of shoes in the stores-- the flats have never been flatter and the heels have never been higher. For the woman who claims she can't wear heels, if that woman exists, flats are coming in a variety of colors and styles. Flats look great with shorts, ankle pants and even for the evening. You don't need a heel for sophistication.

HEELS: The way to wear the super high heels is either as a platform or as a wedge so you don't break your ankles. The extra weight on the heel also helps you balance, and believe it or not, a chunkier shoe also helps balance out a heavier calf.

brigHT COlOreD Dresses Vs. nuDe COlOreD:

BRIGHTS: Primary colors are in! Think crayola and the strong reds, blues, greens, and yellows. You have to remember your skin tone matters and your age matters! You really don't want to wear these colors if you have pinkish skin tone, if you're over 55 or if you're under 5"4, because you'll look like a crayon.

NUDES: Everything I just said about the brights now no longer applies. For all those who shouldn't wear the brights, nudes are just as in right now. Tone on tone is one of the most sophisticated palates in fashion if you do it right.

sKinnY panTs Vs. WiDe leg TrOusers:

SKINNY: If you have too much thigh, you can't wear skinny jeans. If you do brave skinny jeans, work it so that you balance the body line. Since you have skinny on the bottom, balance the top with something big. Go with the opposites have something big and then something narrower.

WIDE LEG: No matter your shape, welcome the resurgence of the high-waisted trouser and jean. It's flattering for a heavier hip and thigh.

What Men Need to Know: The Woman’s Point of View

1. The most important thing is being sensitive and romantic in your words and actions. Please don’t fake your emotions and say things you don’t mean.2. Please listen to what she is saying. Most of the men never try to know what a woman wants because they never listen attentively. Don’t take your girl for granted. 3. Do build her trust by being faithful and truthful, and always “being there.” 4. Spend time together, cuddling, kissing and learning to enjoy foreplay. Learn about her body and erogenous zones instead of jumping to the real thing. 5. Never expect or demand sex.

What Women Need to know: The Man’s Point of View

1. Do take the initiative instead of expecting him to be the one to initiate first always.2. Try to accept him without judgment. 3. If you are still dating casually don’t expect him to profess his love for you so soon.4. Don’t push him into a commitment or an exclusive relationship.

5. Don’t take everything personally. 6. Don’t always expect him to apologize to you. 7. Do let him withdraw once in awhile; understand his need to be alone, to take things slowly, or to have a night out with the guys.

It is quite normal to have ups and downs in a relationship but how you argue when in a relationship can determine if you have a relationship that falls apart or lasts.

Things to avoid when arguing or fighting with your relationship partner: 1. Criticism, 2. Contempt 3. Defensiveness and stonewalling (withdrawing from talking)

Good things to use in an argument:1. Using humor to break tension in an argument. 2. Expressions of affection for your partner. 3. Acknowledge your partners point of view.

In any relationship what is important is understanding and trust. It is important to build and maintain a FRIENDSHIP in your relationship and that you give your partner the benefit of the doubt when times are tough... namely TRUST! Learn to understand each other, know each other and know what makes your partner happy.

RJ Profile of the Month

Sangeeta BachaniMusic Mantra: A treat for the ears

by Ali Fazal

With her unique presentation, Sangeeta’s Music Mantra is a special treat for the domestic divas of Dallas. In her show, Sangeeta takes listeners on a mellow ride, with musical stylings ranging from 1970’s jams to modern hits.

But let it be known, Sangeeta isn’t your average RJ who comes in and makes up her show on the spot. This stay at home mom tackles each show with research and precision. Spending 2-3 hours formulating ideas and doing research for each show, Sangeeta makes sure that her readers are listening to something of value. “I want the show to be more than just ‘mindless’ entertainment. I want it to be something that will make the listeners think,” Sangeeta shares.

Sangeeta also strives to mix it up on a regular basis. Instead of sticking to the same format day after day, Sangeeta changes it up from a variety of formats. Once a week, she does theme shows, with shows basically revolving around

a certain motif or idea (romantic songs, wedding songs, etc.). She also often does ‘Artist Spotlight’ shows, where she takes listeners through a musical journey of a specific artist. She also plays with modified Antakshari as well, starting songs with proceeding letters. “I want my listeners to go on the musical journey with me,” Sangeeta explains.

Sangeeta’s core listeners of housewives and stay at home moms are simply enchanted with her format. “I’ve been told that when ladies are at home doing chores, they turn on my show, and suddenly their work doesn’t feel like a chore anymore,” Sangeeta laughs.

All in all, Music Mantra has been sweeping the Dallas community off its feet. With the wide variety of musical stylings and a cool, mellow host waiting to take you on this soothing ride, it sounds like Salaam Namaste’s Sangeeta is already on her way to becoming somewhat of a sensation!

At Salaam Namaste, we recently received a letter to the editor this past month from a devoted reader that brought up a very interesting point. The reader pointed out that media today is structured in a very misogynistic way. There is tons of media devoted to the trials and tribulations of youth (think Gossip Girl), massive amounts of media devoted to career-powered businesswomen (think Sex and the City), and of course, a surplus of media reaching out to males of all ages (think of every sporting event or auto show ever produced). However, our dear reader pointed out that there is little to no dedication to providing housewives and stay-at-home moms with entertainment and enjoyment that is catered specifically to them. Well, our reader is in luck: Sangeeta Bachani, popular Radio Salaam Namaste programmer, is out to shake up that philosophy, and have a little fun along the way.

Manipuriclassical dance from the north East Indian state of Manipur

Manipuri is the classical dance from the North

East Indian state of Manipur. Its themes are

devotional and are performed on religious

occasions and in temples throughout the area.

It is even often referred to as "sankirtan".

The term Manipuri actually covers a number

of dance forms from the region. The most

important being the Ras Lila and the Pung

Cholom.

MUSICThere is a very characteristic style of music for Manipuri dance. The music is generally similar to the larger body of north Indian (Hindustani) music. However there are differences in nomenclature of rags, tals, and the style of presentation is somewhat different.

Manipuri is unique among the classical Indian dances in that the instrumentation is a central part of the dance, rather than as a side accompaniment. Dances are very much based upon the cymbals (kartal or manjira) and the cylindrical drum known as Manipuri mridang or pung. Unlike other classical dances where the instrument is merely used as an accompaniment, the pung and the kartal (manjira) are actually used in the dance. Other common instruments are the harmonium, pena, bansuri, shankh (conch), and esraj.

The songs used in Manipuri are usually from the great poets of old such as Jaydev, Vidyapati, Chandidas, Govindadas or Gyandas. Any of a number of languages may be used such as Sanskrit, Maithili, Brijbhasha or others.

FORMSThere are a number of forms in Manipuri. These are the Ras Lila, the Pung Cholom, Nupa Cholom, Thoibi and a host of others. We will now look at them in greater detail.

The Ras Lila is the most important dance form in the Manipuri style. The theme revolves around the love of Krishna and the milkmaids (gopinis). Although the themes are romantic, we must remember that the Bhakti school of Hinduism considers physical love as a metaphor for spiritual longing. There are five Ras Lilas that deal with the divine love of Radha and Krishna. These are: Maharas, Vasantras, Kunjaras, Nityaras and Divaras. Other Ras’ deal with various aspects of Krishna’s life such as Karnabheda (ear piercing), marriage, etc. The performance of Ras Lila is generally performed in a special enclosure in front of the temple called a Nat Mandap.

The Pung Cholom is a very characteristic dance of Manipur. It is based upon the drum known as pung or Manipuri mridang. This dance may be performed by men or women and is usually a prelude to the Ras Lila. In this style, the dancers play the pung at the same time that they are dancing.

Sometimes acrobatics are used for an exciting effect, all without breaking the flow of the music.

There are a number of other dance forms that make up the Manipuri tradition. The Nupa Pala is a variation of the Pung Cholom; this is also known as the Kartal Cholom and is the cymbal dance. There is the Khamba Thoibi; this portrays the love affair between a prince and princes of two warring clans. There is also the Maibi dance; this dance deals with the cosmogony of the Meitei people of Manipur.

HISTORYThe history and development of Manipuri dance is interesting. It is said that King Khuyoi Tompok was a great patron of the arts and developed Manipuri in the 2nd century AD. However, it is not very likely that this early form of Manipuri had much in common with contemporary forms.

It is more likely that Manipuri began to take a familiar form with the introduction of Vaishnavism in the 15th century AD. This was first introduced by King Kyamba and greatly expanded under the support of later kings such as Khagemba, Chairairangaba and a host of others.

The earlier forms of Manipuri had not been codified or given a scientific base. This was accomplished in the 18th century by King Bhagyachandra . He invited the major teachers and performers from all over the area to codify their art into a coherent system.Today, Manipuri is generally acknowledged as a classical dance form of very high artistic and technical standards.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS USED TO ACCOMPANY MANIPURIPung -Kartal (Manjira) -Manzilla -Pena -Harmonium -Bansuri -Esraj -Shankh

Pung is a drum from the north-east Indian state of Manipur. This association is so strong that it has come to be known as the manipuri mridang. It is held in very high esteem and is very much used in the Manipuri style of dance. There is even a whole dance form based upon it known as Pung Chalom.

The pung is very similar to the khol in its construction and technique. There are really only a few differences. The pung has a body made of wood while the khol has a body of clay. Another

difference is that both left and right sides of the pung are similar in size while the khol has sides that are very different. Another difference is that the khol has a greater girth while the pung is more cylindrical.

No one knows how long this drum has

been in existence. It is said that it was introduced into the area by king Khuyoi Tompok in the year 154 AD.

(Continued from page 59)

...and after a while, it’s pretty easy to predict exactly what a particular movie-going experience will entail. With Slumdog Millionaire, I didn’t know much about the film beforehand other than the fact that it was very critically acclaimed. But after all, being a critic, I know how unreliable such verdicts can be in gauging a film’s true content.

Now believe me, I have seen all the ‘hinglish’ films available in the market. Bend it like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, Monsoon Wedding, Bollywood/Hollywood—you name it, I’ve seen it. Thus, as I walked into that cool, air-conditioned theater, I thought I was in for a totally predictable ride. Boy, was I wrong.

For starters, the crowd in the theater was totally not what I had expected. From other desi-centric films I’ve reviewed, I’ve come to expect a mostly empty theater, filled with a few chatty aunties clad in salwar kameez and sneakers. The breakdown here though, was totally unexpected. As I climbed up the stairs to find an empty group of seats for me and my friends, I was astounded by the variety: I saw a frantic suit-clad lawyer, tapping away on his Blackberry, desperate to compose that last email before the lights dimmed. I saw a group of giddy teenage girls, eagerly gossiping about how cute they thought lead star Dev Patel’s British accent was when he appeared on Letterman the night before. I saw older couples, younger couples, South Asians, Americans, and everything in between.

That’s really the special thing about this little film-- the impact it’s had on such a widespread and diverse movie-going population. After all, who knew that a film with a Welsch director, an Indo-Brit leading man, and an Indian heroine could have such a global impact and win the Golden Globe award for Best Picture?

After seeing the film, I understood perfectly why this film has become a worldwide sensation. Though the film is set solely in the slums of Mumbai, it has themes that appeal to individuals everywhere: Loss, Love, Redemption, and the ever-present Rags to rich element which warms hearts around the globe.

Focusing on a simple young man named Jamal, his rough path as a latchkey child, and his eventual rise to being a millionaire-, this riveting slice of life is a must-see for people of all ages. Now, here at Salaam Namaste, we’re not into telling our listeners what to do. That being said, Slumdog Millionaire is a must-see, and we absolutely demand you watch it.

FeatureThe nature of LoveKya yehi pyaar hai…

The language and understanding of emotions is foreign to many who are trained in logic and objectivity. I hope to demystify this language by putting it into a context that we all can relate to and understand. My hope is that the reader gains insights and can take a positive idea home.

You meet someone for the first time and if the chemistry clicks you immediately feel attracted. You’re at your best: witty, clean, and pretty much as good as you will ever be. So is the other. Over time you find topics, activities, and friends of mutual interest. Everything seems right. You are in love…You continue seeing each other, and your lives become more intertwined, and finally you decide to make it all official and form a lifetime bond based on love. You would do anything for each other. Your emotions are incredibly intense. Your love knows no bounds. In the book ‘The Road Less Traveled’, M. Scott Peck devotes an entire section to the topic of Love. It’s probably not what you think it is though. He starts out by defining Love, and then talks about what Love is not. Many of us will be disappointed to know that it is not what we feel when we go through the scenario described above.

Here’s what Peck says:“Of all the misconceptions about love, the most powerful and pervasive is the belief that falling in love is love...”

So here I am….Aha….what a surprise….what are you thinking now!!!!

He goes on to say that falling in love has two really important characteristics. First, there is a sexual attraction part of it; Who wouldn’t know this one……. it has to be someone we are sexually attracted to… Second, invariably the feeling of being in love is temporary. The honeymoon ends. We stop idealizing our partner. This always happens. The “feeling” goes away.

At this point I see you smiling!!

Reality hits…haqiqat takra gai...

I think that falling in love is a chemical and emotional response to the stimulus of being loved by another and being the absolute center of their attention. It is amazingly powerful while it lasts. It's no wonder that when it ends, we break the relationship and move on to the next one.Peck divides what most people call love into two stages: the first initial feeling of love and the more considerate, thought out acts of love that follow. He defines love as, "The will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth." Note that he does not label it a feeling; rather, it is a decision (The will to extend...).

Think of it like this. You know that feeling when you meet a new person and begin dating. The incredible energy, longing, discovery, and attention that you give to each other. That's the first stage. Really it is easy. You ignore incompatibilities and defects in each other. Life is easy. Everything is good and u think kiya baat hai…kuch to hua hai…zindagi rocks…

Unfortunately, that is not what love is really about. If it were that easy, the divorce rate wouldn't be so high. This initial stage invevitably fades. It fades, and only then does true love begin.

This was discovery for me. .as if.. I was watching discovery channel!!!

Love is a choice--not an emotion or feeling. It is a decision that we make. We decide that we will

give love to another, accept them for what they are. Only by recognizing that, we can we truly make a commitment to a relationship.

Well ...what do you think? Is it easy or tremendously difficult?

So here I have an answer for you…don’t think too hard…because we all lie somewhere in the spectrum and need tuning…I mean fine tuning!!

It is convenient to say something like, "I don't feel love for her, and therefore I won't buy her flowers." That is a cop out. In fact, doing loving things is the essence of loving someone. Not just buying presents, but respecting that person and giving them your time and attention. It's about kindness, support, and doing the things that allow the person to feel valued in their role in your relationship. As Peck says, "Love is as love does."

I believe, and perhaps many of you would agree... When people "fall out of love" two things are really happening. The first is that the "chemical" attraction of falling in love fades. Sorry..... This is inevitable… I wish I could help!!!

The next thing though is to choose to love. When the attraction fades (the honeymoon is over), that is when love must start. Often when people divorce, we hear ‘justifications’ like, "I just didn't love him anymore." All this does not mean that you should choose love over your own health. Do not stay in

an abusive relationship. If the couple has truly tried and done their work, the separation can possibly be reasonably amicable .Another factor, our emotions go beyond ourselves. And kids are strong unit of South Asian marriages...

Many marriages survive the shocks and carry many emotional stress because they don’t want to break the unit and disappoint the kids….every story is different and holds different issues and dynamics….but the choice is always very difficult.

Divorce can be ugly and nasty. Choosing to love is almost always a better course. I would urge that we should think critically before entering courtship …as later on one may end up with fewer regrets and may be another honeymoon to recharge the relationship!!!

And say impulsively haan yehi pyaar hai…

You are What You Are my friend: a Desi! by Talha Ansari

It was a quiet Saturday evening; my wife & I were hosting a newly

acquainted Desi couple at our house for the first time. After a typical

hearty South Asian dinner, I suggested that we go watch a movie. “Sounds

like a plan, which movie?” was the question posed by the husband of the

guest couple. When I replied with the words “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”

there was a moment of tense silence. I felt as though I had said something

insulting. The wife from the guest couple, noticing the weird halt of

dialogue, quickly chimed in by saying “Oh! He hates ‘Desi’ movies. He

just thinks that they are a waste of time. Sometimes I even have to drag

him to ‘Desi’ functions. When we were buying our house and the deal

was nearly done, he saw a ‘Desi’ couple standing outside another house

on the same street and he cancelled the deal saying that I don’t want to

live in an area surrounded by Desi’s.” Without saying a word I stood up

with an amused expression on my face and walked away from the living

room, where we were sitting, and went into my room and brought back

one of my wife’s hand held make-up mirrors and handed it to my guest

and said “In case you hadn’t noticed.”

Needless to say my above mentioned reaction was not taken in good humor (well, to be brutally honest, there was no humor intended as I was outraged by their way of thinking) and our guests got up and left. I guess considering the fact that they were guests at my house I should have hidden my disdain for their beautiful thoughts till they had left, but I felt so disgusted at that point that I just could not resist myself.

However, the sad part is that this was not the first time that I had come across such sentiments from a fellow South Asian. I have heard similar comments several times in the past and just cannot come to terms with the fact that so many of us are uncomfortable with our identity. Are we confused about who we are or do we not like what we see in the mirror? Is it that we are constantly trying to create an ulterior identity for ourselves? Let’s get one thing straight; we are who we are and have been what we are since the time of our conception and there is nothing that any one of us can do to change that. I can somewhat understand the plight of someone born in this country to South Asian parents. If ‘they’ are a little confused about who ‘they’ really are, it is still somewhat justifiable, but there is absolutely no excuse for someone who is born and brought up in either of the South Asian countries and has moved to the US anytime after their teens.

We have an enviable culture and a strong and beautiful heritage. Instead of being proud of that heritage and making it even stronger, we are hell bent on trying to create boundaries within our own community. Each one of us has the responsibility of representing our culture and our traditions, rather than running away from them. The more we run away from them, the easier it is for others to exploit those teachings and traditions and use them for promoting the ‘wrong’ things. This is what has been happening for the last decade or so in South Asian region of the world. If we realize how lucky we are to be part of such a great culture, start acting proud of who we are, and stand side by side of each other, there is absolutely no way that these so called ‘evil forces’ will be able to divide us and make us fight amongst each other. I started off this article talking about a ‘Desi’ movie, and honestly it is not about whether you like watching a ‘Desi’ movie or not. The point was to not reject something based on the fact that it is ‘Desi’. How would you like to be rejected for a job interview or a home or car loan only because of the fact that you are Desi. Think about it.

I am who I am and I’m darn proud of it; you should be too.

You know, that image of the the nuclear desi-America family, returned to the sub-Continent for a long (summer) vacation, of mom, dad, brother, sister posing in front of the Taj Majal. The group is huddled close on that bench hoping for the perfect portrait. And really, how can the picture be bad? That grand marble monument towering in the background, its skewed reflection glimmering in the rectangular pond. Observing that familiar image reflected on the movie screen and understanding that feeling of closeness and comfort of being together in a foreign place, put a big smile on my face, as did most of Mira Nair’s latest film The Namesake.

From the novel:“For 33 years she missed her life in India. now she will miss her job in the library, the women with whom she’s worked. She will miss throwing parties. She will missing living with her daughter, the surprising companionship they have formed, going into cambridge together to see old movies at the Capital Brattle, teaching her to cook the food Sonia had complained of eating as a child. She will miss the opportunity to drive, as she sometimes does on her way home from the library, to the university, past the engineering building where her husband once worked. She will miss the country in which she had grown to know and love her husband. Though his ashes have been scattered into the Ganges, it is here in this house and in this town, that he will continue to dwell into her mind...”

Immigration: FAQFrequently Asked non-immigrant Questions. By elaine Martin, Attorney. For more info, visit www.martinvisalaw.com.

1. "Visa" vs "status" explained. It is very common for people to use the term "visa" when referring to a foreign national's immigration status in the US. For example,

people will ask "what visa do I need to study here?" or "when does your visa expire?" when they really want to know when the authorized stay expires. So what exactly is a "visa" and why is using that word confusing? Unless you are Canadian, you will need a visa stamp on your passport to enter the US. The visa is the stamp on your passport that you get a U.S consulate outside the US. You cannot get a visa in the US. The visa is a travel document and is only needed to enter the US. Once you are in the US, you can stay past the expiration of your visa as explained below.

"Status" means that category in which you entered the US (e.g. H-1B, L-2, B-1) and the length of time you can stay here. This may not always be the same as the visa, for example if you entered in F-1 status, using an F-1 visa, and then changed to H-1B status.

2. How long can I stay in the U.S? You can stay in the US as long as your status allows. Normally, this length of time is dictated by your I-94. The I-94 is the small white (or green if you used the Visa Waiver Program to enter) card that a US immigration officer put in your passport when you entered the US. If you had a change or extension of status approved after you first entered the US, the approval notice will have a new I-94 attached to the bottom. This new I-94 should show long you can stay here. However, any travel close to the approval, or after the approval, might affect how long you can stay in the US, so please ask your attorney for specific advice. 3. Do I need a new visa after my status has been extended? In general, you only need a new visa stamp in your passport to return to the US after the current visa has expired. If you are not traveling, you can stay in the US after the expiration of your visa provided that your status has been extended. If you travel before your visa has expired, and you have an extension approval, you should show both the old, unexpired, visa and the extension approval, to the immigration officer and you should get the extension end date on your new I-94.

4. Do I need a new visa after my status has been changed? If you are not traveling, you can stay in the US after a change of status without needing a new visa. After the change of status has been approved, however, you will need to get a new visa (showing the new status) before you can return to the US from overseas in the new status.

5. Where can I get a visa? You can get a visa at a consulate in your home country or in another country to which you have close ties. Many foreign nationals also apply for visas at consulates in Canada or Mexico. This option is normally available to applicants to have no prior immigration violations, and no criminal, medical, or other unusual issues. Please check the website of the consulate where you want to apply, for specific procedures, document requirements, and waiting times. The consulate websites are listed here: http://www.usembassy.gov/. Waiting time at the consulates are available here: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/tempvisitors_wait.php. In addition to the wait times listed on this website, you should be prepared for potential delays due to security clearances. In the worst cases, we have seen security clearance take months, particularly for people from predominantly Muslim countries,

unfortunately. 6. Can my spouse or children work when they accompany me to the US? Your spouse will be eligible for work authorization if s/he is in one of these categories: L-2, E-1, E-2, E-3, J-2, K-2, K-4 status. Spouses in most other dependent status are not eligible to work in that status. They may be eligible for another status, independent of yours, that would allow them to work. Children in dependent status, except those in J or K status and those at the final stage of the green card process, cannot get work authorization. Your spouse and dependents, if eligible, can get work authorization by filing a Form I¬765 with the USCIS. This can be done once s/he has entered the US in the nonimmigrant status, and takes about 3-4 months for approval. Until the I-765 is approved, your dependent cannot work. BooksHow to Marry the Man of your ChoiceAuthors: Margaret KentPublisher: Hachette IndiaIt might be a New York Times Bestseller, may have sold a million copies but it really doesn’t contain the formula to ‘marry the man of your choice’, simply because the author expects one to put in a lot of effort into strategizing and thinking about how to entrap the man.

Her ‘what not to do’s’ are at times witty but mostly unbelievable, especially when she suggests that a woman should not

wear sharp earrings on her first date as the man, who would otherwise envision himself nibbling on her earlobes, could get distracted; or when talking about where to meet men she asks one to strike up conversations in a doctor’s waiting room or become a shoeseller to meet men. So you can “ask him about his shoes” to start a conversation.

Although at some places, the book does

give logical explanations on how to deal with a man when he is angry so that it doesn’t turn into a fight, how to make him feel unique or how to criticise and not insult; the book largely makes the woman look like a giver and a strategist whose always thinking about what to do when the man is around. One wonders. Can a relationship really work if you put so much effort into it? By Neha Sharma, HT

Marrying anita Author: Anita JainPublisher: Penguin

After working as a financial journalist in Mexico City, Singapore, London, New York and Delhi, where she currently lives. Journalist-turned-author Anita Jain came up with this book named Marrying Anita: A Quest for Love in the New India.

The book Marrying Anita: A Quest for Love in the New India is her journey from New York city (where she apparently gets frustrated with commitment phobic people) to New Delhi to find a husband.

Marrying Anita is a book, which is not only about her encounters with the suitable grooms, but also about the modern India; its ambitious youngsters, booming economy and changing mindset of people living in Delhi, where she discovers youngsters like her who live life on their own terms.

Despite being a Harvard University graduate and having been brought abroad, she doesn’t find any difference in her and the people she meets in this modern India. Written from an NRI’s prespective, this book also peeps into the life of NRI families, their family values, tension, insecurities and ambitions.

Marrying Anita… is essentially Anita’s memoir compiled very delicately. Being of a chick-lit genre it has spice, but at the same time it shows the changing face of India.

Life is often rushed. But eating slowly encour-ages you to take a time-out. Pause a moment before you eat to give thanks for the gift of food that lies before you. An attitude of gratitude helps you to enjoy each bite more. Plus, the more you chew, the more your teeth and sali-vary enzymes break down your food so your stomach doesn’t have to.

You don’t have to be a chef to be an artist in the kitchen. The food you prepare can engage all your senses—from the aroma across the room to the vibrant colors and playful textures. All these characteristics create a rich, satisfy-ing experience no matter what you’re eating. If you’re the one in the kitchen, toss in some ed-ible flowers, garnish with your favorite herbs, and try using plates in colors that complement your creation.

Sharing a meal or breaking bread is a timeless custom across all cultures. It’s a way to cel-ebrate your food. Eating with others might also encourage you to relax and enjoy the full expe-rience around you, which will also help you eat more slowly.

Turn off the tube. Step away from your desk. Give eating your undivided attention. Savor ev-ery bite. These strategies will help you tune in to your body’s sensations so you know when you’re full. There’s no reason to keep eating if your body says enough. In fact, yogis will tell you to stop eating even before you are full be-cause a full belly makes you sluggish.

Looking to other cultures can give you cool cues for eating well too. For example, a beauti-ful Japanese custom is to serve each item in its own small dish. These dishes enhance the vi-sual experience as well as encourage you to eat smaller portions. Each small entrée in unison becomes an ensemble of food with plenty of interest and variety to make dining delicious.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose track of nature’s seasonal ebb and flow. Eating the freshest fruits, vegetables, and fish of the sea-son ensures that you’ll have the widest selec-tion to choose from and increases your connec-tion to mother earth and the natural rhythms beneath the sun, moon, and stars.

A good cook knows that it’s all about the ingre-dients. To ensure that your meal is sensational, make certain each ingredient is fresh. The best way to do this is to eat only foods that are grow-ing in your area right now. If you buy some-thing that isn’t growing near you, it’s likely to have withered a bit while withstanding travel over time and distance.

Top 10 Successful Sizzling Hot Couples Of Bollywood

It’s truly said that “Matches are made in

Heaven”, and it is their trust, understanding,

bond, emotion, and most importantly their

love that keep their relationship alive for several

years. Their love never changes for each

other, it remains the same before marriage or

after marriage. Thei love waits for no time, it is

visible through their gestures, actions, words,

and affections. Take a look at Bollywood most

sizzling and most successful couples in this

Salaam Namaste showdown!Preity Zinta and ness Wadia

The latest gossip doing the rounds in our saucy little tinseltown is regarding the state of affairs between dimply Preity Zinta and the dashing heir of Bombay Dyeing Industries, Ness Wadia. An incident that gives credibility to the speculation that Preity-Ness are heading towards splitville: Preity was left stranded on a road in sweltering heat by her darling boyfriend.

Rumors have always been rife regarding the relationship of the unmarried couple. Reportedly, high socialite Maureen Wadia, mother of Ness, disapproves of Preity, in spite of her attempts to look classy.

They are soon planning to get married and spend their life happily together. Preity, despite being relatively out of sight these days film-wise, is still a hot star and thus, this stunning couple is definitely on the list.

Even though Akshay Kumar has a huge fan following of girls, he still loves his wife Twinkle madly. Akshay and Twinkle Khanna’s marriage is 7 years old, and their love life seems to be growing stronger with every passing day. Twinkle Khanna has become the lucky charm for Akshay Kumar, because after he married her, his movies hit the bullseye at the box office and his recent blockbuster “Singh Is Kinng” gave him the title of the new ‘Kinng of Bollywood’.

After marriage, Twinkle said goodbye to Bollywood, and is keeping busy with her son Arav, but Akshay turned out to be a Kinng from a Khiladi. Most definitely another scorching duo!

Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan are definitely made for each other. Malaika is hot, gorgeous, and sensuous while Arbaaz is very smart, intelligent, and loving. With the all guts of successful couple, they make a perfect pair and are happily married. It is said that it was love at first sight when they met on a coffee ad campaign. Surely Arbaaz and Malaika have many happy years ahead of them, despite the continuing rumors of an impending split..

Ajay Devgan and Kajol are the most adorable couple of Bollywood. They got married after a 5 year courtship; they also make quite a unique combination. Ajay is brooding and has a typical ‘angry young man’ look while Kajol is simply lovely and elegant.

Even though they are poles apart, they are the perfect match. They also have a lovely daughter named Nysa who is madly loved by them.

Saif was clearly the main cause of Kareena and Shahid’s four years long relationship’s demise. Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are famous for their baggage of past failed relationships. Saif has proved that love has no limit by realizing in only 3 short months of their relationship that he was deeply and madly in love with Kareena. As a symbol of his undying affection, Saif got Kareena’s name tatooed on his forearm.

They go together to functions as a power couple, and party the night away frequently. It seems that they simply cannot live without each other. Recently, they had a concert in Dubai together which got much publicity due to their mad love affair.Well, no doubt, Chote Nawab and Bebo made quite the sizzling hot jodi. In fact, the duo have signed a whopping 6 films together, including Karan Johar’s upcoming production.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are the new romantic couple of Bollywood. They were paired together (with amazing results) in last fall’s hit romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno. Deepika and Ranbir are known for showing their love in true youngistaan style. Both the stars are

frequently caught kissing each other in airports and on film sets, quite a rarity for prude Bollywood stars.

Touted as some of the biggest superstars of the future, Ranbir and Deepika have not been hiding their love from the public. In fact, a little birdie tells us that Ranbir is quite good with his hands…now get your mind out of the gutter!. All we are saying is that he was recently seen flexing his muscles while working out at Deepika’s new home at Pali Hill.

As of now, Ranbir and Deepika are too engrossed in their love to be bothered by anyone. We certainly hope this love continues to blossom, since film industry relationships fade faster than most. We hope that neither Ranbir or Deepika changes with success. Remember Kareena and Shahid? We hope, this time, history does not repeat itself!

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif are the couple who are mostly responsible for the headlines day after day after in the newspaper. Salman is often regarded as the troubled actor in Bollywood, with his rumored underworld connections, rash driving, and constant breakups. However, Salman changed his game by laying quite low after his break up with ex-flame Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. That is, until he met the delightful Katrina Kaif.

Katrina Kaif spends a lot of time with Salman’s family and has cultivated very close relationships with his parents and siblings. He has helped her out by improving her Hindi and recommending her for films in which he stars.

Hrithik Roshan saw Suzzane Khan at a traffic signal, much like his first meeting with Amisha Patel in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. It was love at first sight. The shy Duggu (Hrithik’s nickname) took his time getting to know actor turned director Sanjay Khan’s gorgeous daughter.

When Suzanne stuck by him through his turbulent superstardom phase after Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Duggu knew he had found his soul mate. Their A-List,

star studded wedding is still one of the most talked about events Bollywood has ever seen!

Suzanne is an Interior Designer and Hrithik a perfectionist. Suzanne is vivacious and chatty, while Hrithik is shy. He has a huge fan- following of teenage girl, while Suzanne’s modeling days brought her a fair share of male admirers. They are without a doubt made for each other.

Abhishek Bachchan got married last year to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the same year they also got the Best Male and Best Female acting awards for their roles in Guru. About four years back, both of them were dating different people and nobody ever even guessed that this odd couple would end up together.

Strange but true-- this couple seems to come up straight from Bollywood, having had lots of humor, drama, suspense and romance in their relatively short relationship. They have such sizzling chemistry on screen that it is said they are the most demanded couple in Tinseltown apart from SRK and Kajol. Speaking of which...

Shahrukh Khan was walking down a New Dehli road when he stopped dead in his tracks. He saw the most amazing pair of legs in a short skirt. Even before he saw who they belonged to, he claims he was in love. It was Gauri Khan.Shahrukh saw Gauri again when she was 14 years old in a Disco. He says he

was attracted to her the moment he saw her and was later surprised that it was something more than lust.

They married three times: the first was legal, the second was a muslim Nikah and the third was according to Hindu rituals. They have a daughter named Suhana and son named Aryan. He calls her Gauri Maa. Gauri was everything Shahrukh was not: cool, classy, and sophisticated. He was hyper, sloppy and hated fashion. He always says the credit for turning an animal like him into a suave man goes to Gauri.

In fact, when her Hindu family opposed their wedding because he was Muslim, he wooed Gauri’s family in true Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge style. Later, when Gauri fought with him over the idea that he move to Mumbai to become an actor full-time, he managed to convince her it would all work out. Boy, was he right!.

They were seperated during this period, but when SRK heard that Gauri was in Mumbai staying with a friend, he literally combed the streets and found her! Shahrukh’s love of life is Gauri and their pair is perfect. Their sacrifice and deep affection for each other makes them one of the most revered, well-liked couples in Bollywood.

The couples listed above give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Marriages are made in heaven’. What other way could we describe such sensational couples?

Salaam namaste’s Ali Fazal gives you this month’s most salacious gossip.

1. Looks like Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham are quite the sizzling jodi after the success of Dostana. Rumor has it that a top filmmaker, well known for making ‘serious’ films, has approached the two of them to star opposite his favorite heroine Urmila Matondkar in his new production. With this film close to finalized and the sequel to Dostana already in development for 2010, looks like there’s no slowing down for this dream duo.

2. Bipasha Basu seems to have reverted back to the diva behavior she started off with in Bollywood. While shooting for Lamhaa with Sanjay Dutt on the India-Kashmir border, some fights apparently broke out between the production crew and some locals. Without telling anyone (even an assistant!), Bips stormed off to her hotel room, quickly packed her bags, and took off back to Mumbai. When questioned later, she claims that she feared for her safety. Keep this kind of behavior up Bipasha, and you’ll find yourself right back in the D-list films in which you started.

3. Poor Shamita Shetty is apparently desperate for work. Rumor has it that the sexy siren has been begging to be given the item song in big sis Shilpa Shetty’s new project The Man co-starring fossil Sunny Deol. As of right now, producer Dharmendra and director Neeraj Pathak have penciled in item girl du jour Rakhi Sawant to do the fast-paced number. Look Shammy, when you’re jealous of the film work that Rakhi Sawant is getting, it’s time for a career change.

4. Wherever Kareena Kapoor goes, drama seems to follow. The actress was recently scheduled to be the show-stopper at celeb designer Manish Malhotra’s recent fashion show, but things went awry backstage fairly quickly. Upon arrival, Kareena was apparently upset because her dressing room was only separated from the rest of the female models by a curtain. Bebo was apparently afraid that the models would try and take a picture of her changing. After Kareena’s bad luck with camera phone leaks (remember her kissing scandal with Shahid Kapoor?), its no wonder that Kareena was cautious this time around.

5. Konkona Sen Sharma might be covering her eyes in shame sometime soon. In last month’s Luck by Chance, the Bengali beauty apparently has a romantic number with Farhan Khan in which she is wearing a rather revealing chiffon sari. However, being the foodie that she is, Konkona didn’t bother dieting or toning up before filming, thus creating a rather, um, flabby effect on screen. Next time you hike up your top Koko, try a few sit-ups in your trailer first.

Sherlyn, has taken the peace of organizers. The latest buzz around the industry is that as Sherlyn Chopra embarks on her promotional tour for the song, organizers are panicking, fearing they’ll be sued for indecent exposure!

Shahrukh Khan Uses Mineral Water To Wash His HairWhen it comes to hair-care, Shahrukh is one step ahead of all. He is very conscious of his hair, as it is badly affected by hard water usually found in hotels. He faced the tribulation of using hard water while shooting in a remote place for Paheli, and now, wherever he goes, he carries mineral water with him to wash his hair. We thought only women were Divas in Bollywood, but King Khan proved us wrong this time!

Music ReviewBillu Barber (4/5 rating)A Shah Rukh Khan film is always special. But what does he do when the film is centered on Irrfan Khan, as also conveyed by the title of the film, with

him being only in a special appearance? Well, he only goes full-on to make it as commercial as possible by appearing in number of song and dance

appearances. Not just that, he also ropes in some of the top heroines in the industry and makes them dance along with him. If in Om Shanti Om, he had

opted for Vishal-Shekhar as the composers, for Billu Barber he gives Pritam the responsibility of creating a hardcore commercial score. While 2008 was

superb for the composer with number of back to back successful albums (Jannat, Singh Is Kinng, Race, Kismat Konnection, Golmaal Returns), 2009 also

promises to follow suit with Billu Barber beginning the year!

MUSICItem song no.1 - that’s ‘Marjaani’ for you! From the very first beat, you know that there is no way this song won’t succeed in reaching the top of the charts. A fast paced track that remains Indian at heart even with all the Western beats surrounding it, ‘Marjaani’ has Pritam giving his all to ensure that his ‘jodi’ with Kareena Kapoor continues to be a big hit. Remember ‘It’s Rocking’ (Kya Love Story Hai) and ‘Yeh Ishq Hai’ (Jab We Met)? The fun continues with ‘Balkan Mix’ and ‘Electro House’

He goes on to create ‘Love Mera Hit Hit’ which he could have composed in his sleep, considering the ‘template’ feel to it. Item song no.2, it is just a follow up to many a dance floor chartbusters that he has created in movies like Race (‘Khwaab Dekhe Jhoothe Moothe’) and Kismat Konnection (‘Ae Pappi’). ‘The House Mix’ and ‘Remix’ version ensure that the song remains with you much after you have heard it first.

Another ‘template’ song in the album is ‘You Get Me Rockin & Reeling’ which has a beginning akin to that of ‘Zara Zara Touch Me’ [Race]. However, soon after it moves to being much more childlike and innocent with the advent of lyrics that go as ‘Khudaya Khair’. In fact based on the same tune

with just the words ‘Khudaya Khair’, there is another namesake song that follows later in the album. While the former has a slight Western twang to it, the latter comes with a full-on Indian feel. These two are yet another very good additions to this album that seems to have one chartbuster packed after another in the album.

There is a speed breaker though in the form of ‘Ae Aa O’ which is the first rock track of the album and doesn’t really make you jump with joy in the very first listening. In fact the very sound of ‘Ae Aa O’ (also appearing later in the remix version) that remains persistent throughout the track is ordinary and straight out of a commercial.

It’s a different Pritam that one hears in ‘Jaoon Kahan’ which is a sad song expected to play in the background at multiple junctures. Though there isn’t anything extraordinary about the compositions due to the heard-before factor, ‘Jaoon Kahan’ is still a soothing number enough to keep your interest in the song to follow. Later, one can sense a clear Priyadarshan influence to the proceedings with ‘Billoo Bhayankar’ bringing the album to a close. With a rustic folk flavor to it while keeping the fun quotient intact, ‘Billoo Bhayankar’ is a song that hails the central protagonist of the film played by Irrfan Khan.

Movie PreviewLuck by Chance Producer: Farhan AkhtarDirector: Zoya AkhtarCast: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Juhi Chawla, Isha Sharwani, Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor

The fantasy sellers and the devoted audience. The insane love for Cinema mixed with the eccentric notion of divinity and archaic beliefs. These are

the contradictions that keep this world spinning. The stark reality of living in India juxtaposed with the fantastical world depicted on screen suddenly

begins to make sense in Zoya Akhtar’s Luck by Chance.

Sona (Konkona Sen Sharma) arrives in Bombay with her dreams of becoming a film star. Wide eyed but ambitious, she does whatever it takes to make it. She lives on her own in a rented apartment - a luxury for most in this bustling city, and spends her time with a motley crew of loyal friends whose lives are also entwined with Bollywood, each one in search of a bigger dream.

Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) has just moved to the city leaving the comforts of his parents Delhi home. He is a mover, and is used to getting what he wants and is smart enough to know when to demand it and when to manipulate it. He is young and handsome, and full of promise. Sona begins to enjoy Vikram's attention and affections; they develop a romantic relationship.

Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) is a successful though superstitious producer who only works with the biggest stars. He is making a potential blockbuster launching the nubile Nikki Khurana (Isha Sharwani), the 18-year-old daughter of 70's superstar, Neena (Dimple Kapadia). The hero of the film, Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan), is Rolly's favorite superstar. He was launched by Rolly and went on to become a huge draw at the box office.

The wheels of fate indeed continue to spin favorably for Vikram, as elsewhere in the industry, havoc spreads on the sets of producer Rommy Rolly's new film. Vikram is called in for an audition and uses this opportunity to the fullest.

The film is about a slice of Bollywood life, in which Kismet plays a huge role. Here, notions of superstition, fate and destiny underline every life, as grand desires and opportunity converge to form strange patterns.

In such an unpredictable climate is success and failure what others define for you or is it something you decide for yourself.

Luck By Chance is a contemporary tale set in a world desperate to escape its own reality.

Luck by Chance is releasing in full stadium seating at Hollywood Theaters in Irving, TX on January 30th. Don’t get unLUCKy!

Music Review

Slumdog Millionaire (4/5 rating)Slumdog Millionaire is an excellent album that deserves all the

applause and accolades it has been collecting internationally. Basically,

a theme album with most of the tracks being background pieces, it

never makes you miss the need of any spoken words for most of its

duration. And even for those who look want their music to have full

song and dance routines, there are numbers like ‘Jai Ho’ and ‘Ringa

Ringa’ to keep them entertained. Play this one on for a long ride;

you would certainly enjoy the sheer variety that comes along with it!

PICK’S: ‘Jai Ho’, ‘Gangsta Blues’, ‘Ringa Ringa’, ‘O Saya’, ‘Dreams On Fir’

Dev D (4/5 rating)

Amit Trivedi gives an excellent start to the year by presenting

to audience the music of Dev D, which brings in so much variety

to proceedings that one just feels truly content. These are the kind

of songs that should play for bits and piece in the narrative of Dev

D and add great value to it. There are some albums that make you

say - ‘Chuck the very thought around whether this album will do well

commercially or not; it is an exemplary piece of work and that’s what

that matters most’! Well, Dev D is one such album. Just pick this one

quickly from the shelves; they don’t make such albums in dozens!

PICK’S: ‘Duniya’, ‘Emosanal Attyachaar’, ‘Nayan Tarse’, ‘Dhol Yaara Dhol’By Joginder Tuteja

Victory (3/5 rating)

After a false start with ‘Money Money’, one almost looses all

hopes with Victory. However, ‘Balla Utha’ turns out to be a victorious

song followed by the theme track Victory which goes with the spirit

of the film. However, to bring some variety into the proceedings, ‘Tu

Ne Re’ and ‘Aisa Toh Socha Na Tha’ make for a good listening as

well. In any case, regardless of any other number in the album, if

Victory would be remembered, it would be for ‘Bala Utha’, a number

that is all set to be the next anthem track for the Indian cricket team

after Chak De India!

PICK’S: ‘Balla Utha’, ‘Tu Ne Re’, ‘Aisa Toh Socha Na Tha’

Luck By Chance (3/5 rating)

As 2009 kick starts, Luck By Chance brings with it a different flavor of music to it, something which is completely different from some of the biggest hits that 2008 saw. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy push the envelope, as expected, and dare to do something different in a film which is being pitched in a commercial market. Though it would be wrong to expect this album to take a thundering start at the music stands due to its unique flavor and unconventional style, as an entire soundtrack it does work for the film. Luck By Chance is one of those albums where one can’t expect a single number to make waves but listen to it as an original soundtrack and it certainly turns out to be

pretty enjoyable.

PICK’S: ‘Sapnon Se Bhare Naina’, ‘Yeh Zindagi Bhi’, ‘O Rahi Re’

Bollywood

(Continued from page 89)

LYRICS‘Marjaani’ boasts of lyrics that have a characteristic Gulzar touch to them. In fact with the kind of flavor that Pritam brings to his lyrics, one wonders whether we are looking at another Pancham da-Gulzar ‘jodi’ in the offering since the composer makes it all sound so commercial that one ends up remembering many a chartbuster hits that Pancham da and Gulzar had delivered three decades back! On the other hand, don’t bother about lyrics like ‘Khit Pit’, ‘Hit Hit’, ‘Kudi Tu Sexy’ etc. - it’s the catchy feel and rhythm that matters most for ‘Love Mera Hit Hit’ and lyricist Ashish Pandit does well on those grounds! Neeraj Shridhar also turns lyricist for ‘Ae Aa O’ but the words here aren’t anything above ordinary.

Sayeed Quadri and Gulzar write a version each for ‘Khudaya Khair’ that also arrives as ‘You Get Me Rockin & Reeling’. Both the numbers bring in a different flavor though the element of pure and innocent love remains intact in each of the instances. Sayeed Quadri also writes ‘Jaoon Kahan’ that narrates the state of the protagonist who has lost a lot in his life while Gulzar gets his own take on the protagonist’s popularity with ‘Billoo Bhayankar’.

VOCALSSukhwinder Singh, the voice of Shah Rukh Khan opens ‘Marjaani’ and allows Sunidhi Chauhan to arrive on the scene who shines in a big way. She is truly in form in her only number in Billu Barber

and ensures that her hit record with Kareena Kapoor stays intact. Later K.K. too arrives for the ‘Balkan Mix’ of the song and adds on to the options available for the final song placement in the film.

Neeraj Shridhar, the voice that never fails Pritam, is in full form again for ‘Love Mera Hit Hit’ though it is Tulsi Kumar who surprises most with her altogether different style of rendition for Deepika Padukone. Neeraj also sings the solo ‘You Get Me Rockin & Reeling’ which later arrives as ‘Khudaya Khair’ with Soham, Akriti Kakar and Monali bringing a certain Indian-ness to the proceedings. With Abhijeet coming back on scene with the ‘reprise version’ of the same song, one knows what to expect considering the fact that the singer has sung many a hits for Shah Rukh Khan during last 15 odd years!

K.K., who is otherwise so dependable, doesn’t really make ‘Ae Aa O’ rise above ordinary. Most of the times he is capable of turning the most average

compositions good due to his sheer prowess behind the mike but in case of ‘Ae Aa O’, he isn’t able to do much even in company of Rana Mazumder and Suraj. On the other hand, Raahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice manages to bring in some ‘thehrav’ in the proceedings that were being dominated by beats and rhythm all this while. Ajay Jhingaran, Raghuveer and Kalpana come together for a

rustic ‘Billoo Bhayankar’ and though the song is not the next chartbuster in the making, it should help the narrative of Billu Barber.

OVERALLBillu Barber has a rocking start to it with songs like ‘Marjaani’ and ‘Love Mera Hit Hit’ that are guaranteed chartbusters in the making. Though ‘Ae Aa O’ is the only number that doesn’t quite make a mark, ‘Khudaya Khair’ brings in a nice feel-good touch to it which keeps the flag high for Billu Barber. On the other hand, ‘Jaoon Kahan’ and ‘Billoo Bhayankar’ add on to the situational flavor. While the soundtrack should work well for the film, we are not looking at a Race or a Jannat or a Singh Is Kinng that are being played even till date. Still, from the popularity perspective, Billu Barber should go the Kismat Konnection and Golmaal Returns way by being reasonably successful.
