From the President It is with great anticipation andexcitement that we begin 2008 as aShropshire breed. Our breed has a newexecutive secretary-treasurer in BeckyPeterson from the New Eng-land area. She was selected inLouisville and started her du-ties on December 1st. Becky can be contacted bymail at 41 Bell Road, LeydenMA 01337, by phone (413)624-9652, and by e-mail [email protected]. Shewill start doing registrations, transfers, and memberships on March15th 2008. Currently, the Sheep Asso-ciation & Registry is processing regis-trations for Shropshire breeders. Since Dale Blackburn’s passing theIowa office has done an outstandingjob of straightening out our registration

mess and getting registrations done ina timely manner. A big thanks to CarolRueber who served as our secretaryand to George Buckham who served as

our treasurer. The McCabe and Creamerflocks are in the midst of lamb-ing here the middle of Januaryand it gets challenging in coldweather, but the birth of newlambs is what we all work for. 2009 will be an im-portant year for the Shrop-shire breed as it marks the

125th year for our breed. Watch foractivities as the 2009 year approaches.I look forward to seeing, visiting, andmeeting all Shropshire breeders and en-thusiasts in 2008 at the many sales andshows for this year.

Keeping a close eye on the ring action are three ladies that can always be found at Shropshire shows, from left, Karen Johnson, Nancy Cessna and Julie Rife.

Mason Johnson, 2-1/2 year old son of Russ and Molly Johnson and grandson of Bob and Karen Johnson, finds the green sawdust most intrigu-ing during the Shropshire show at NAILE. He knows there will be plenty of time in his future to pay attention to the sheep show. For now let’s just play!

My family began raising Shropshiresin 1965 when, at the age of 14, my dad,Lynn, decided to raise sheep. Shrop-shires appeared tobe a simple choicefor him; havinggrown up in Hart-land, Wis. and be-ing friends withthe McKerrows, hehad access to qual-ity breeding stocknot far away. Aftermy Dad movedout of his child-hood home mygrandpa, Fritz (af-fectionatelyfectionatelyf calledGrandpa Sheep),maintained theflock until about1984. Some ofmy earliest memories are of GrandmaSheep putting bread bags over my feetto keep them dry as I would head outto feed the bottle lambs in the winterwith Grandpa. It was in the early ‘80s, when I wasabout four years old, that Shropshiresfirst appeared at my childhood home, located 10 miles north of Oconomo-woc,oc,oc, Wis.At first we summer-pastureda couple dozen ewes for the McKer-row family on our mere three acres. In1986 my 4-H project started with threeShropshire ewes from the Vilter’s ofHartland,Wis. Our flock has remained small and

Meet your Directorsmostly closed on the ewe side since then, with only three ewes being added to theflock until last year when we purchasedfour ewes from Fred Groverman. Thesmall Hiemke Family Shropshire flockhas always been maintained as a mod-

erate-sized pro-duction-orientedflock. It continuesto be a family affair– even after all theHiemke kids havefinished college;mysister (Carissa) andparents (Lynn andMary) do the dailychores, my brother(Clayton) and hiswife (Heidi) anddaughter (Hope)head home fromMadison to helpon occasion, andI travel back fromCalifornia every

four months to spend more than halfmy time home out working with thesheep.

My interests have always been inagriculture, and most specifically sheep.Growing up I had two part-time jobs:working on a neighboring dairy farmand shearing sheep from age 15 to 29.I have maintained active involvement inagricultural organizations: I was secre-tary/treasurer of the Wisconsin Shrop-shireAssociation for about 13 years andserved as an active member of the Wis-consin Sheep Breeders and theWiscon-sin Livestock Breeders Board of Direc-tors.

To: Board of DirectorsAmerican Shropshire AssociationDear Board Members: On September 16,2007 the NewEngland Shropshire Association met,and on the agenda was the topicof the vote in Wisconsin regardingslick shearing. There was considerable discus-sion regarding how this vote cameto happen at a meeting with onlya very small number of memberspresent. The New England Associationvoted to inform the National Boardthat the New England Associationdoes not support a “slick shearrule” and request that the Board ofDirectors not pass this change tothe By Laws of the Association. It was felt that members shouldhave a right to present their sheepas they choose. A motion was made and passedto inform the Board of Directorsthat the New England Associationrecommends that the board recom-mend to fairs and shows that bothclasses for sheep shown with wooland slick sheared classes be offered. In support of this, the Big E hasagreed to add 4 slick sheared classesto the Shropshire Show in 2008.

Letter to the Editor

Thoughts to Ponder

By Randy RifeDirector/Ohio District

Let us all be concerned about the fu-ture of our industry. We are at a thresh-old with the explosion in feed and hayprices. The switch to hair sheep or Boargoats has been real, but they, too, mustbe fed. A long time friend in the sheepindustry has just added Alpacas and nodoubt his sheep numbers will drop. They, too, must be fed! But one powerful dif-ferenceferencef jumps out to me. How manypeople do you see eating Alpacas? Theyare just expensive “yard ornaments”with exorbitant vet bills! The severe drought of 2007 in manyareas of our country will not continue.Pastures will green up and becomelush again. Hay will become abundantand much cheaper. Grass and rough-age are the mainstay of a sheep’s diet. Many times during the 1970’s and early‘80’s, Elwin Newcomer from northwest

We want to be as gentle as a lamb but if your news and advertising is not if your news and advertising is not turned in by turned in by March 15 we March 15 we will have will have no choice no choice but to but to growl like growl like a Lion!

Ohio, after spending a lifetime being oneof the most production-minded Shrop-shire breeders of all times, stressed tome, “Randy, remember, we are dealingwith a ruminary animal. You don’t needto feed a lot of grain. Back to the basicsis where we all must head.” The threshold I speak of is the op-portunity of nurturing the young fami-lies that want to raise and show sheep. Our Shropshire breed offers so muchwith our mid-sized, functional, efficient, and most attractive animals that have agreat disposition. Let us all be positiveabout our breed and try to encourageand help a new young person becomethe next Shropshire breeder from yourarea.

This encouragement and help couldcome from many avenues. Maybe offer-ing to breed their half a dozen femalesto one of your stud rams. Maybe paying

them with a few bales of hay in exchangefor some much needed help with yourextra barn chores on a Saturday. Maybeasking them to come along to a majorshow to help you with the event. Inspire a “fire in the belly” to be-come more involved. Personally invitingtheir family to your next breed picnic.Giving the new family next door yourbottle babies and working with them tomake sure they just don’t die, but growinto a starter flock for littleAmy or Billy.Extend an offer to the local 4-H Club tohost one of their meetings at your placewith a tour of your sheep program.Pro-vide refreshments and answer questionsas to “why Shropshires”. Inspire young folks to want to beinvolved with our breed. We do have agreat breed and much to offer. Let uscross over that threshold and makesomething positive happen!
