INTRODUCE THE LESSONState daily objective: Today we are learning about possessive pronouns.

Briefly introduce possessive pronouns and describe their meaning.

© COPYRIGHT 2009 by Lori Wolfe. Limited Reproduction Permission: Teachers are granted limited copyright permission to photocopy this page for student, classroom, or instructional use in one classroom only (not for resale). Reproduction for an entire school or school district is unlawful and strictly prohibited.

THE ACTIVITYIntroduce the following prompt and reply using an object that belongs to you and a few classroom objects.

Prompt: Who does this belong to? Reply: It belongs to _____. It’s _____.

• Practice by holding up an object and using the prompt and reply. Ask students to Call Back- they repeat after you until they are comfortable with the structure. Remember that students need to learn the prompt as well as the reply.

• Collect a few objects from the students. Continue practicing the prompt and reply with those objects.

CHANTUse the chant to help students identify and understand possessive pronouns. You will repeat the chant several times. Follow the outline listed below.

• Say the chant while the students listen for the possessive pronouns.

• Help students identify them and briefly discuss their meaning.

• Call Back: Students repeat lines after you.

• Students raise their hand every time they hear a possessive pronoun. (If you like an active class, ask the students to stand up and sit down every time they hear a possessive pronoun.)

• Pass out all the word cards. Recite the chant. Students hold up the card when they hear their word.

Possessive pronouns tell us to whom something belongs. Like most pronouns, we use them to refer to whom or to what we are talking about. For example: We could say, “This book is my book. This book is mine. It’s mine.” Or: “That book is your book. That book is yours. It’s yours.”

Here are the possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs.

WRAP IT UP!Refer to the objective and remind students that they reviewed possessive pronouns.

Parting Passport:Ask the students to say their favorite line of the day using a possessive pronoun.

THE ENDNote any student that had particular troubles with this lesson.

GAME

PICTURE CARD MANIA

WHAT YOU NEED:• Word cards

HOW TO PLAY:• Divide your class into 2 lines and name the first person of each line as the team leader • Starting with the leader, the teacher reads one of the pronoun word cards. The first student to give the corresponding possessive pronoun wins and goes to the end of their line• The next person in line goes up against the remaining student • The team that has the leader back to the front of the line wins!

Extra rounds of play: Have each student be the teacher.
