Training Requirements
• A number of OSHA regulations require employers to train their employees on specific hazards in General Industry
Exits Routes & emergency Planning
• Emergency Action plans- Workers must be trained on:
• Ways to report a fire• How to evacuate & routes• How everyone will be accounted for• Procedures for workers that remain to
operate critical equipment• Procedures for workers who render
medical duties
Fire Prevention Plans
• An employer must inform employees upon initial assignment to a job of the fire hazards to which they are exposed.
• Example: Flammable liquids
Powered Platforms For Building Maintenance
• Workers trained on:• Safety hazards of their specific work tasks,• Hazards with work platforms including the
specific hazards with the type of platform being used
• Personal fall arrest equipment • Inspection of platform & fall protection
equipment
Powered Platforms For Building Maintenance
• Written work procedures for operation, safe use and inspection of working platforms
• Pictorial methods of instruction may be used
• The operating manuals supplied by manufacturers can be used as the basis for these procedures.
• Training must be certified
Occupational Noise
• Training program for those exposed to noise at or above an 8-hour time weighted average of 85 decibels
• Annual retraining• Training to cover:• Effects of noise on hearing• Use of hearing protectors• The purpose of audiometric testing
Flammable Tank Storage
• Tanks stored in areas prone to flooding• Detailed printed instructions of what to do
in flood emergencies are properly posted. • Workers informed as to the location and
operation of such valves and other equipment necessary to effect these requirements
Transportation of Explosives• Driver trained on
hazard and how to protect public of Class A & B explosives
• Requirements for bulk delivery, packaged, and water gel slurry blasting agents
Storage & Handling of LP Gas• Workers properly
trained in installation, removal, operation, and maintenance
Anhydrous Ammonia
• Workers loading and unloading tank cars
Process Safety Management• Process Operators• Refresher training
every 3 years• Workers doing
process maintenance to maintain process integrity
• Training must be certified
Process Safety Management
• Contractors trained on work practices and what to do in case of fire, explosion or toxic release
• Contract employer must ensure workers follow facility safety rules
• Training must be certified
Hazardous Waste & Emergency Response
• General site employees – 40 hrs. training• Occasional site workers – 24 hrs.• Managers/supervisors - 40 hrs. + 24

• Workers to be trained on when PPE is required,

Respirators
• Why the respirator is necessary, and how to properly fit, use and maintain
• Limitations of the respirator• Respirator inspection• Annual retraining
Accident Prevention Signs & Tags
• Workers informed that danger signs indicate immediate danger and special precautions are necessary
• Workers informed that caution signs indicate a possible hazard against which proper precautions should be taken
Permit Required Confined Spaces
• Training for entrants, attendants, entry supervisor, rescuers & emergency services workers
• Training must be certified
Lock Out / Tag Out• Authorized & affected
employees trained• Affected employees
on the meaning of locks/tags
• Authorized on the specific procedures
• Training must be certified
Medical Services & First Aid
• In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid.
• Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.

• Workers expected to use fire extinguishers• Persons responsible for maintaining fixed
extinguishing systems, fire detection systems, or employee alarm systems

• Evaluation of operator’s performance every 3 years

crane operators must be trained if they use more than one crane to lift a load.
• Crane operators have to be trained on fire extinguisher use
Subpart O - Machine Guarding• Maintenance persons
for power presses and modifications
• Operators of power presses on proper use
Machine Guarding• Supervisors to
monitor operator’s proper use
• If presence sensing devices are used, training on these devices must be certified
Forging Machines• Training for persons
responsible for inspection & maintenance of forging machines
Subpart Q - Welding• Welders & cutters suitably and their
supervisors are suitably trained in the safe operation of their equipment and the safe use of the process.
• Workers operating oxygen or fuel-gas supply equipment, including generators, and oxygen or fuel-gas distribution piping systems shall be instructed and judged competent.
Arc Welding• Workers designated
to operate arc welding equipment shall have been properly instructed and qualified
Resistance Welding• Workers designated
to operate resistance welding equipment shall have been properly instructed and judged competent to operate such equipment.
Subpart R – Special Industries
• Pulp Paper Mills - Training on chlorine respirators
• Laundries - Workers trained on hazards verbally and in writing
• Logging - Safe performance of duties and on equipment used to fell trees, retraining, and first aid training. Training must be certified.

• Telecommunications – • (1) Recognition and avoidance of dangers
relating to encounters with harmful substances and animal, insect, or plant life;
• (2) Procedures to be followed in emergency situations; and,
• (3) First-aid training, including instruction in artificial respiration.

• Only persons trained in the operation of the derrick shall be permitted to operate the derrick.

preventive measures for the hazards related to dust accumulations and common ignition sources such as smoking
• Specific training on job tasks including cleaning procedures for grinding equipment, clearing procedures for choked legs, housekeeping procedures, hot work procedures, preventive maintenance procedures and lock out tag out.

• Specific training for workers entering regulated areas, and on the carcinogen, and medical surveillance

• Specific training on carcinogenicity of vinyl chloride, monitoring program, respirators, medical surveillance programs
Inorganic Arsenic
• Training for workers exposed over the PEL, or who have the possibility of skin/ eye irritation.
• Annual retraining on hazard• How arsenic is used, respirators, medical
surveillance program, and engineering controls used
Lead
• Workers exposed over the action limit of 30 ug/m3.
• Employees provided with a copy of lead standard & appendices, respirators, engineering controls, where exposure can occur, medical removal provisions
• Annual re-training
Hexavalent Chromium
• Hazard communication training on hexavalent chromium and the hex chrome law
• A copy of the law must be readily available to employees
Cadmium• Training for all
workers potentially exposed to cadmium
• How they can be exposed, medical surveillance, engineering controls
Benzene
• Workers exposed to benzene.• If exposure is above the action limit of .5
ppm, annual retraining• Covers the law, medical surveillance
Coke Oven Emissions
• Covers workers in regulated areas, and retraining conducted annually
• Cover respirators, medical surveillance, and written procedures and the law
Bloodborne Pathogens
• Covers all workers with occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infective materials
• Training upon initial employment and annually thereafter
• Training on transmission, disinfection, post exposure evaluation and follow up, hepatitis B vaccination
Bloodborne Pathogens
• Annual retraining and training records must be certified
• Training records must be kept 3 years• The trainer is required to be
knowledgeable about bloodborne pathogens so they can answer worker’s questions.
Cotton Dust
• Training to cover long terms hazards of cotton dust, where exposure can occur, respiratory protection

• Workers to be trained on The quantity, location, manner of use, release or storage of DBCP and the specific nature of operations which could result in exposure to DBCP as well as any necessary protective steps;
• Requirements of the OSHA law on DBCP

• Workers exposed above the action limit and those whose exposure is maintained below the action limit with engineering controls
• Annual retraining• Covers how worker can be exposed,
health effects, and the OSHA law
Ethylene Oxide• Workers exposed
over action limit or over excursion limit
• Where EtO is present, medical monitoring and air monitoring, contents of OSHA law
Formaldehyde
• Covers all workers exposed above .1 ppm• Covers hazard, symptoms of exposure,
medical surveillance, respirators, emergency procedures
Methylenedianiline
• Covers the hazard, medical removal provisions, OSHA law
1,3-Butadiene
• Covers workers exposed above the action limit or short term exposure limit
• Covers where BD is used, engineering controls, OSHA law, and right to medical exams if worker is exposed
Methylene Chloride• Covers workers
potentially exposed to MC
• Workers exposed over the action limit to be informed of how they could be exposed
Ionizing Radiation• Workers to be
informed of evacuation signals, area postings, and radiation hazards
• This provision is enforced by Texas Dept. of State Health Services
Hazard Communication
• Workers to be informed of written program, how to read safety data sheets, labels, and where exposure can occur
Laboratory Standard
• Workers to be trained on the chemical hygiene plan, how they can be exposed and symptoms of exposure, the OSHA law
