New Economical One-Part Polyurethane Adhesives and Sealants
One-part polyurethanes are one of the most widely used adhesive/sealants in the industry and have applications in nearly all markets. One-part polyurethanes are ideal for customers who are seeking a low-cost elastomeric bond and/or a general-purpose seal. Elastomeric bonding is typically required when the bond joint:
n Experiences high movement
n Experiences high impact
n Contains dissimilar substrates that are exposed to thermal cycling
The new LOCTITE® 3370™ Adhesive/Sealant and LOCTITE® 3310™ Sealant polyurethanes offer:
n The most economical polyurethane solutions
n Good adhesion on a variety of substrates
n Extremely user-friendly, one-part chemistry
n Fast curing speeds
n High elongation for improved durability on dissimilar substrates
n Resistance to aging and weathering exposure (color stability)
n Non-sagging characteristics
n The ability to paint 24 hours after application
n Three colors (white, grey and black)
n High initial tack (Loctite® 3370™ Adhesive)
n A variety of packaging sizes, including sausage packs, cartridges, pails and drums

High Performance Loctite® Elastomeric Adhesives and Sealants
Loctite® elastomeric adhesives and sealants offer superior adhesion, excellent weatherability, temperature independence of viscosity and are isocyanate- and solvent-free, among other significant benefits.
These products exhibit high resiliency while maintaining high tensile strength and good adhesion to many substrates – without the use of a primer.
These innovative products can be used wherever polyurethanes or silicones come up short. They are ideal for:
n Applications with high movement, high impact, dissimilar substrates or those exposed to heating and cooling cycles, damp conditions or UV light
n Concrete gap filling, waterproofing, elastic sealing, gasketing and bonding, and in problem applications
n Processes where the sealant must be applied prior to painting. This is a key feature that sets them apart from silicones and polyurethanes
LOCTITE® 5510™, 5570™, 5590™, 5512™ and 5572™ adhesives and sealants are:
n 2X stronger than polyurethanes
n Isocyanate- and solvent-free (low VOCs)
n Low odor
n Extremely user-friendly, one-part chemistry
n Noncorrosive
n Paintable immediately after application
n Primerless
n Elastomeric
n Easy to dispense at low temperatures
n Non-yellowing, UV stable

Joining Methods
Overview
Structural bonding is a process in which two materials are solidly and permanently assembled using an adhesive. Adhesives build “bridges” between the surfaces of substrates to be joined.
To achieve the optimal bonding result, the following premises must be met:
n Compatibility of the adhesive with the materials to be bonded
n Compatibility of the adhesive with the specified requirements
n Correct processing of the adhesive
Benefits of Adhesive Bonding vs. Conventional Joining Methods
1. Uniform stress distribution over the entire bonding surface.
n Positive effect on the static and dynamic strength.
n Saves production costs by replacing conventional mechanical fasteners (screws, rivets or welding).
2. No change in surface and texture of joined materials.
n Welding temperatures change the texture and, therefore, the mechanical properties of materials.
3. Weight saving.
n Adhesives are perfect for light-weight constructions, where thin-walled parts (wall thickness < 0.5 mm) must be joined.
4. Adhesives act as sealants.
n Prevent loss of pressure or liquids.
n Block the penetration of condensing water.
n Protect against corrosion.
5. Joining different materials.
n Adhesive forms an insulating layer.
n Prevention of contact corrosion.
n Electrical and thermal insulator.

Stress distribution
Flexible bonding is a highly efficient and reliable technique for joining parts; it is widely accepted by automotive OEMs and suppliers.
Elastic adhesives combine the advantages of bonding and sealing in one single operation. Flexible adhesives:
n Prevent corrosive media entering or leaking from assemblies, even in wider joints or gaps.
n Create a friction-locked joint of mating parts by means of adhesion to the substrates and inherent strength or cohesion within the adhesive itself.
n Are selected for their capability of absorbing and/or compensating dynamic stresses.
n Exhibit a high inherent strength (cohesion) and a high modulus, achieving friction-locked joints which, at the same time, have elastic properties.
Benefits of Flexible Bonding
n Simplified design by increasing strength to withstand dynamic loads.
n Prevents material fatigue and failure by achieving uniform transmission of the load and by maintaining the structural integrity (no thermal or mechanical weakening of parts).
n Saves production costs by replacing conventional mechanical fasteners (screws, rivets or welding).
n Allows the most varied substrate combinations (e.g. metal/plastic, metal/glass, etc.), and reduces and/or compensates for stress caused by differential thermal expansion of joint substrates.
n Compensates for the tolerances of the parts to be joined.
High vibration Absorption
Sealing
11
Safe, reliable and Trouble-Free
The safety and reliability of most applications often strongly depend on which components are joined together, on a reliable seal created between these parts, and on the trouble-free, consistent performance of the sealants used.
Suitable sealants:
n Prevent possible damage by protecting against unfavorable environmental influences, penetration or leakage of hazardous materials and gasses, corrosion, etc.
n Allow simplified designs and provide improved appearance.
Benefits of Sealing
Sealants form a “bridge” between different part surfaces.
n The strength of a bond depends upon adhesion of the sealant to the surface of the substrate and cohesion (strength within the sealant itself).
n The physical and chemical properties of sealants depend to a large extent on the selected raw material basis.
n Elastic sealants have a high elongation of >200%.
n Sealants have reversible deformation with a high recovery rate of >70%.
n Plastic sealants display only slight or no recovery and low admissible total deformation (<5%).
