Featuring: Azerbaijani Dances - From the Land of Fire Our most recent Masters in Minneapolis Guest Instructor, Laman Hendricks, Founder and Artistic Director of Dances of Caucasus, provided us with a wealth of information on the dances and culture of Azerbaijan, the Land of Fire. Laman is a native Azeri, with years of professional dance training. Growing up in the Azeri culture, she first learned the social dances by watching her family dance and following along. Featuring Azerbaijani Dances - From the Land of Fire Our most recent Masters in Minneapolis Guest Instructor Laman Hendricks Founder and ArtisticDirector of Dances of Caucasus provided us with a wealth of information on the dances andculture of Azerbaijan the Land of Fire Laman is a native Azeri with years of professional dancetraining Growing up in the Azeri culture she first learned the social dances by watching her familydance and following along

While the shared border between Turkey and Azerbaijan is fairly small about 11 miles in length theimpact of Azeri dances and culture along this small eastern region of Turkey are substantial Laman taught us that Russian Ballet greatly influenced Azeri dances There is much emphasis onarm movement and placement and you can see these stylings in the Turkish dances along theshared border says Dans Askinas Artistic Director Amina Beres The costuming is very elegantand each embellishment on the costume has a meaning - for example the pearl strands you seewoven into the dancers hair or on the costume signify innocence We are very excited toincorporate these styles into our repertoire We asked Laman to explain some of the differences between Azerbaijani professional (for thestage) dances and wedding (community) dances Professional dances such as Vagzali are ballet-influenced and choreographed with many steps turns and arm movements saidLaman The dancers glide across the stage using directional changes line angles Thedancers divide the stage into many shapes which creates a beautiful visual illusion for theaudience By contrast our wedding dances are social dances with no choreography only a few steps andminimal arm movements Some are very ancient in origin These dances are about communitycelebration we perform them holding hands in a line or facing each other in a circle One dancertakes the lead and the others follow their steps Everyone is smiling and encouraging to eachother the musicians and the singer When we bring these dances to the stage we remain true tothese origins In our social dances you may also see a competition between the men One will move to thecenter of the circle encouraged by the clapping of the others and dance until he either tires orsomeone else challenges him We look forward to sharing the lessons weve learned from Laman with you in our upcomingperformances

Alexandra began her dance journey when she fell in love with theatre Aspart of her curriculum she studied various dance styles including ballet jazzmodern and belly dance Much of her dance training is through the Banat alKamar program she also has taken classes with the instructors at theCassandra School After taking a dance workshop with Artemis Mourat shefell in love with the Turkish and Romani dance styles and continued herTurkish dance studies with Amina Beres from 2011-2014 Alexandra looksforward to sharing her love of this dance with others Anthea has been dancing since 2010 performing with Sisters of the Saharaand with Afsana She teaches ldquoBelly Dance for Every Bodyrdquo at G365 Fitnessin Coon Rapids and leads an informal group Muse comprised of studentsfrom her class and local dancers Her goal for the class and Muse is tointroduce as many people to belly dancing as possible

Join us in welcoming Alexandra amp Anthea to Dans Askina

Alexandra began her dance journey when she fell in love with theatre Aspart of her curriculum she studied various dance styles including ballet jazzmodern and belly dance Much of her dance training is through the Banat alKamar program she also has taken classes with the instructors at theCassandra School After taking a dance workshop with Artemis Mourat shefell in love with the Turkish and Romani dance styles and continued herTurkish dance studies with Amina Beres from 2011-2014 Alexandra looksforward to sharing her love of this dance with others Anthea has been dancing since 2010 performing with Sisters of the Saharaand with Afsana She teaches ldquoBelly Dance for Every Bodyrdquo at G365 Fitnessin Coon Rapids and leads an informal group Muse comprised of studentsfrom her class and local dancers Her goal for the class and Muse is tointroduce as many people to belly dancing as possible

Turkish Dance Classes Learn about Turkish Dance with our Artistic Director Amina Beres Classes are held on Tuesdayevenings through Hopkins Community Education at the Hopkins Center for the PerformingArts Summer Session June 26 - August 7 (no class on July 3) from 7 - 830 pm Amina also offers private lessons and coaching for individual dancers or troupes Aminas teaching philosophy Each of us begins our dance journey for different reasons and Icelebrate the different reasons that bring students of all ages shapes and sizes together I striveto create a supportive positive and most importantly a fun learning environment
