Spring for many homeowners means confront-ing all the things that have filled up the closets, basement and garage over the past year. As the latecomedian George Carlin used to say: “Your houseis a pile of stuff with a cover on it.”

Getting rid of that stuff has always been tricky— especially if you hope to come away with somecash.

Today, because of the Internet and the recession, there are more options than ever for trying to sell

used items. To newspaper classified ads, garagesales and flea markets, add Facebook, Craig’s List,eBay and other online trading sites. To pawn shopsand consignment shops, add an expanding array ofresale stores that pay cash on the spot.

Laura Deaton Morarity, who was preparing tomove recently to a new public relations job inSeattle, was a little stunned at how much she hadacquired in her Cincinnati-area home after livingthere just four years.

Sebok recently signeda year lease on the two-bedroom, one-bathroomocean-view unit southof Los Angeles at $3,150a month. For the cardplayer, who spends muchof his time traveling andstaying in hotels, it’s thefirst place of his own.

But in typical Seboksocial networking fash-ion, this is no ordinaryclient-decorator workingrelationship.

“The coolest part is webasically decided to dothe whole thing on Twit-ter and Facebook,”saidSebok, who has a largefollowing on Twitter.

Sebok and Cunning-ham use social media asa communication anddecision-making tooland as a way to allowothers to track theirback and forth.“It justmade sense instead ofhaving meetings,”Cun-ningham said.

She will take videos ofthrift store and flea mar-ket finds, for example, and put them online forSebok and Facebookfans to see and commenton. Or she’ll compile acollage of potential itemsfor one of his rooms. Thepair also go over costsonline to show peoplehow a look could beaccomplished differently.

With tournaments,a TV show and a Website, Sebok needs aprimary residence thatcan serve as the nervecenter for his businessesand a place to entertainfriends. He envisionsan environment that’s“young, casual, hip — across between modernand a beach residence.”

With no previous deco-rating experience, Sebokturned to Cunningham,

whom he met through anacquaintance.

“What I do best is helppeople figure out howto do things on a bud-get,”Cunningham said.“He started with noth-ing but a mattress. We’llstay under $15,000 withsheets, art and acces-sories.”

To keep costs down, many of the furnishingsare being purchasedfrom big-box stores.“Everything we buy can’tbe the ultimate lifetimepiece, although there aresome quality pieces thatcan go along with him toother places,”Cunning-ham said.

One of the challengesof designing the spacehas been working within750 square feet.

“Both bedrooms arebarely big enough tohold a bed,”Cunning-ham said.“We decidedto take his bedroom andmake it about the bed, just a bedroom. The sec-ond bedroom is goingto be a men’s dressingroom/closet with a largebench that could also bea guest bed.”

She thought it wouldgive the unit a moreluxurious feel to devotethe square footage tosomething so indulgent.“The space only needs towork for him.”

But the center ofattention is the livingroom, which has win-dows along the beachside.“This apartment ispurely about the view,”Cunningham said.“That’s why he chose it.”

Cunningham put 30feet of sectional sofas inthe 19-foot-wide room, providing space forfriends to come over andlounge.

Sebok was ranked asthe 17th most influentialperson in poker last yearby Bluff magazine with

tournament winnings inexcess of $1.8 million. He is president of Poker-Road.com.

Cunningham becamethe host of HGTV’s“Design on a Dime” in2003.
