IDEA:THE INDUSTRY’S BEST IDEAAn editorialBy Tom Wadsworth, CDDC

As editor, I rarely get on my soapbox. Over the last 16 years, I’ve written only four editorials. But the topic of IDEA compels me to speak out.

A slow startIDEA turned 20 in 2016. It was created in 1996 in a groundswell of enthusiasm and support from IDA and DASMA. The IDEA board worked incredibly hard to create the industry’s first study guides that identified the hundreds of details involved in running a professional dealership. Their work lifted the giant new IDEA rocket off the ground and launched it into orbit.

In 1999, IDEA finally accredited its 100th dealer. Yet many were disappointed in the slow start, and progress was a constant struggle. While several of the IDA faithful got accredited, thousands of other dealers were slow to invest the time and money.

The certification stimulusWith the introduction of the various certification programs after 2001, dealer interest began to increase. Dealers seemed to embrace certification for their technicians more quickly than accreditation for their business dealerships. Both are valuable to any dealer, but I think dealers perceived certification as lower-hanging fruit.

IDEA Master Technician Lawrie Theurer, Applegate Door, Philomath, Ore. (above)

Manufacturer involvement and support seemed to pick up substantially, especially after the launching of the revitalized CDDC (Certified Door Dealer Consultant) program in 2011. Manufacturers are not only sending sales reps for the CDDC, they’re also sending groups of their dealers’ technicians for certification.

The IDEA for profitabilityThe upsurge of interest in certification and accreditation is very good for our industry. As a general rule, greater professionalism equals greater profitability for dealers.

When technicians get certified, they not only know more about their craft; they also take greater pride in their work. That drives technicians to work more safely and efficiently, making fewer mistakes. This pleases more customers, reduces accident expense, and gets more work done in less time.

A similar dynamic works for dealers who achieve accreditation. They learn more about professional business practices and smarter management, and they, too, take greater pride in their businesses. Greater profitability and long-term viability are inevitable results.

Manufacturer benefits, tooManufacturers who see the big picture realize that all this benefits them. When certified technicians install

their products, the right products are selected for each job, and they are installed properly by a trained professional. That yields fewer warranty callbacks. Efficient technicians are also able to be more productive, installing more manufacturer products in a typical week.

Accredited dealers are also more likely to pay their bills to manufacturers and avoid bankruptcy. These dealers also tend to increase business, selling more manufacturer products annually. When a dealership is more likely to stay in business, it becomes a good long-term sales source for the manufacturer.

Several manufacturers have caught on to all this. They are financially supporting IDEA, and they are granting incentives to dealers to seek certification and accreditation.

This is smart business. It helps dealers, manufacturers, customers, and the entire industry. That’s why IDA and DASMA continue their unwavering support for IDEA as they continue to provide fuel for further growth.

An IDEA whose time has comeWhen IDEA was formed in 1996, Bad Bobs were virtually unheard of and operating only in Florida.

But now, with the nationwide proliferation of residential rip-off repair artists, honest dealers can realize multiple benefits from showing the community that they’re the professionals in town.

Dealers have always struggled to differentiate themselves from their competition. IDEA certification and accreditation give dealers an enormous boost in that crucial marketing challenge. As an IDEA-accredited dealer with IDEA-certified techs, you not only differentiate your business from that big competitor with all the trucks, you also stand head and shoulders above that annoying unethical competitor who is dominating local advertising and ripping off customers.

Even the media see the difference. When TV stations have performed hidden-camera stings to expose the bad guys, reporters are learning to get advice from dealers who are IDEA certified and accredited. For example, NBC sought out IDEA experts when they launched their investigative reports for Dateline NBC in 2011 and for the Today Show in 2014.

Thanks, Bad BobOddly enough, IDEA may have Bad Bob to thank for much of the surging interest in certification and accreditation. Whatever is driving the current surge, this is one bandwagon you can’t afford to ignore.

Make 2017 the year that you become a true professional in this industry. Be the proud local business that is known for expertly trained staff and professional business practices. If you have a competitor who is already IDEA accredited, match them stroke for stroke. Don’t let your reputation fall behind.

A word of praiseOne final note. On this 20th anniversary of IDEA, I offer my praise for the IDEA board of directors. These industry-minded professionals, six dealers and six manufacturers, are working side-by-side for a better industry.

This is not your typical nonprofit board that meets a couple of times a year to talk and make important decisions. This board of dedicated industry professionals takes on the hard work of producing excellent curricula, seminars, study guides, and exams. That work is the rock-solid foundation upon which industry professionalism is built.

They rarely get recognition. They don’t do it for the glory. The work itself is their reward. In this unique camaraderie of dealers and manufacturers working together as equals, the IDEA board represents everything that is right about our industry.

Thank you, IDEA.
