Pope Francis said recently that God always surprises people with the way he works, and because of this, believers should be open to the Lord's way of thinking and acting, rather than expecting him to conform to their aspirations. “The Lord invites us to assume an attitude of humble listening and docile waiting, because the grace of God often presents itself to us in surprising ways, which don't line up with our expectations.” He noted how certain “prejudices” can be nurtured in Christians which prevent them from accepting the reality of how God works, however, “the Lord does not conform to prejudices. We have to force ourselves to open the mind and heart to welcome the divine reality that comes to meet us.” Pope Francis spoke to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square for his Sunday Angelus address, which focused on the passage in the Gospel of Mark in which Jesus returned to his native land to do ministry, but was unable to perform the same miraculous works he had done in other places since people knew him and were skeptical of his preaching and ministry. In his speech, Francis said the people were “scandalized” by what Jesus was doing, since they recognized him as one of them. Asking how it is possible for Jesus' fellow citizens to go from marvel to disbelief, the pope said this is because they made a comparison between the “humble origins” of Jesus and his current abilities to preach and perform miracles. “He is a carpenter, he did not study, yet he preaches better than the scribes and performs miracles. And instead of opening themselves to the reality, [the people] are scandalized,” he said, noting that for the inhabitants of Nazareth, “God is too great to lower himself to speak through such a simple man!” This, he said, is “the scandal of the incarnation: the shocking event of a God made flesh, who thinks with a human mind, works and acts with human hands, loves with a human heart; a God who struggles, eats and sleeps as one of us.” However, in becoming flesh, Jesus “overturns every human scheme: it is not the disciples who washed the feet of the Lord, but it is the Lord who washed the feet of the disciples,” the pope said, noting that this fact is “a cause of scandal and disbelief in every age, even today.” In his remarks, Francis pointed to St. Teresa of Calcutta, who he canonized in September 2016, as a modern-day example of someone simple who performed great works. Even though she was “a small sister,” St. Teresa, through prayer and simplicity, was able to “work wonders,” he said, adding that “she is an example from our day.” Closing his address, Pope Francis said learning to have a mind and heart open to God's logic above all means having faith. “The lack of faith is an obstacle to God's grace,” he said, noting that many baptized Catholics “live as if Christ does not exist: they repeat the signs and acts of faith, but they do not correspond to a real adhesion to the person of Jesus and his Gospel.”Every Christian, he said, “is called to deepen this fundamental belonging, trying to bear witness with a coherent conduct of life, whose leitmotif is charity.”

EVANGELIZATION ALPHA JOURNEY OF FAITH
SMALL DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS MISSIONARY DISCIPLESHIP
Every Pope since St. John XXIII (1958-1963) has called upon the Church to embrace the command of Jesus to Go
Make Disciples. Saint John Paul II spoke often about the need for a New Evangelization which focuses on the
countless individuals who were baptized but have never truly become disciples of Jesus. In the early 1990’s, a new
movement called the Alpha Course began in London and from there spread throughout the world. It has been
enormously successful in conveying the foundation elements of the gospel in such a way as to lead participants to
become intentional disciples of Christ. For the last three years, we have used our Wednesday night Alpha as a
means of evangelizing believers and unbelievers alike AND as an introduction to our Journey of Faith process that
leads inquirers to the sacraments of initiation. Both Alpha and Journey of Faith also lays the foundation that leads to
a desire to become Missionary Disciples—individuals who become willing and able to carry the saving
message of the Gospel to family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. To assist in the formation of
such disciples we have begun Small Discipleship Groups which equip and prepare participants to Go Make
Disciples.
REAL – Alpha presents the reality of who Jesus is. Those that lead Alpha are real and authentic and this allows the guests to be real themselves. People are welcome to ask questions and look for answers, with no pressure to contribute and no follow up if they don’t come back.
RELATIONAL –Alpha is based on genuine friendships that are built up over a few weeks and often last for years afterwards.
RELIANT – On Alpha we are reliant on the Holy Spirit because we realize that it is only God who changes people’s lives; we just introduce Him. No one can force anyone to believe anything. What we’ve found over the years is that if we allow people to be themselves and ask their questions, focus on building relationships and rely on the Holy Spirit, lives are changed.

Feast of Blessed Stanley Rother WWW.STANDREWMOORE.COM July 29, 2018
Blessed Stanley Rother is the first U.S. martyr and priest to be beatified. This means he has been assigned his very own “Feast Day” on the Church calendar—July 28th, the day on which he was martyred. Archbishop Coakley has extended permission for it to be observed at all the Masses this weekend.
For additional information and to watch the award winning documentary on his life, "An Ordinary Martyr," go online to blessedstanleyrother.org.
Blessed Stanley Rother, intercede on behalf of all the members of St.
Andrew’s parish, that God may give us the grace and the courage to
truly become missionary disciples.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
WEDNESDAY, AUG 1ST at 7:OO pm
OR SUNDAY AUG 5TH at 10:15am
in the McConnell Room
For many decades now, the Catholic Church has worked diligently to make our churches and schools a SAFE ENVIRONMENT for all children. Providing such a nurturing environment results in our requiring all who work directly with children and young people in our parish—especially catechists, chaperones, and nursery workers. If you recently volunteered for any of these activities, training is required. We also highly encourage all parents with children in religious education classes at all levels to become safe environment trained. If you are interested in helping with our religious education program or chaperoning a youth event you need training. Childcare can be provided if you pre-register. Please call Ann Grover at 754-5303 to register.
Natural Family Planning Class
Learn Natural Family Planning with Jodi and Cameron Homeyer, instructors of the Sympto-Thermal Method on Saturday, August 4 from 9:00 am to 11:00, at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 3939 West Tecumseh Rd. in Norman in the Lake Room. The entire course consists of three classes, each a month apart. The cost of the full course is $135.00 and you must register online at CCLI.ORG to receive your materials. Childcare is available but you must call or send us an email to register your child. Please call the Office Marriage and Family Life Ministry at (405) 721-8944 or email [email protected] or contact Jodi and Cameron Homeyer at 281.799.9287 or email [email protected] for information about classes.

TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY
There are many people in the community who work very hard to support themselves and their families but who have no or very unreliable transportation. It is very difficult to land a good paying job without a car that can get you back and forth to work. Do you have an old car that still runs well that you are willing to donate to the parish? We can give you a letter attesting to your in kind contribution to make a valid tax deduction. Don’t have a car but willing to donate some cash to this new ministry? Contact Fr. Jack.
