2. EdwardMunch 3. Edward MunchBorn in Norway in 1863. His mother andsister both died of tuberculosis when hewas very young. His father and brotherdied a few years later. He studied art andworked on his paintings in Europe.Throughout his life, Edward was affectedby the deaths of all the people he loved.He got part of one of his fingers blown offfrom a gunshot. By the end of his life, hehad extreme anxiety and was put in amental hospital. 4. Edgar Allan Poe was born on Jan. 19 1809 in Boston,Mass. His father left his family when he was only 1year old, leaving his mother alone with Edgar, hisolder brother William, and baby sister Rosalie. Hismother then died a year later. Edgar was adopted bythe Allan family in Richmond, Virginia. Edgars newfather disciplined him harshly and Edgar left in 1815to study in Scotland. He returned in 1816 and gotengaged to Sarah Royster. He left to study at theUniversity of Virginia for a year and she left him andmarried another man. Poe then lied about his age andjoined the Army in 1827. He left the Army in 1829with his first published book of poems and acquiredthe inspiration for many more. A few years later Poe(26) secretly married his 13 year old cousin Virginia.She died 7 years later of tuberculosis. This alsoinfluences many of his poems and stories.Edgar Allan Poe 5. The Masque of the Red Death is a fictional short story written by Poe in 1845. Itdescribes a disease that spreads across a kingdom killing whoever it infects inhorrendous, painful ways.The king decides to ignore the disease and locks uphis castle to keep it out.The Prince then throws a masquerade ball and anuninvited guest shows up. He is dressed in a red funeral cloak and wears abloodied mask of a dead man, he looks like a person infected with the disease.The prince is furious and attacks the man but then falls dead. When the rest ofthe guests attack him, they rip off his cloak to find no man beneath it. They alldie instantly.The Red Death has won.The Masque of the Red Death 6. Written by John Williams for the movie JAWS. John Williams was bornFeb. 8, 1932. He started playing music very early in his home because hisfather was a jazz musician. He has studied music at numerousuniversities. He has composed hundreds of songs and has been theprimary composer of numerous movie sound tracks such as Star Wars,Indiana Jones, JAWS, E.T., Jurassic Park and Fiddler on the Roof.Jaws Theme Song 7. Paul Celan as born Nov. 22 1920 inRomania. Everyone in his family wasa German speaking Jew. At theoutbreak of WWII, his family wascaptured and put in a forced laborcamp. Paul was only there 18 monthsuntil he escaped to the red army, hisparents however, did not escape anddied in the camp. This has Greatlyaffected Celans poetry.Paul Celan 8. The Fugue of death is a poem Celanwrote to describe the horrors of living ina concentration camp. He describes theguards forcing the prisoners to diggraves for one another. He usesrepetition to show the fears they faceevery day. He uses a lot of symbolism inhis poem as well.The black milk theydrink is symbolic of the poor conditionsthey live in and horrible food they haveto eat.
