Fight Duchenne Golf Day
Sponsorship Opportunities
WelcomeFight Duchenne welcomes you to the inaugural James House Golf Day to support the building of James House in assisting the muscular dystrophy community at the beautiful Parkwood International Golf Club
We promise a great day of golf, with great company, great laughs, great prizes and the opportunity to support a wonderful initiative in the MD community.
Join us as a sponsor or a team and you will be helping to provide much needed support and services to children and families whose lives have been severely compromised by Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a neuromuscular, genetic disorder which results in the progressive deterioration of muscle strength and function ultimately leading to the deterioration of the heart and diaphragm. The most common form of all Muscular Dystrophies in childhood is Duchenne , which is 100% fatal, resulting in Duchenne boys and girls being completely dependent on an electric wheelchair by their early teens. Life expectancy for Duchenne is around early adulthood however some children are losing the battle as young as 8 or 9. There is currently no cure, with the disease affecting boys at a rate of 1 in 3500 and girls at a much rarer rate.
Playing For JamesOn Father’s Day 2006, Julian and Sharyn Thompson heardthe words that no parents would ever like to hear…“Your son has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.”
From that day until now, the Thompsons have worked tirelessly to raise awareness and, most importantly, raise money for research to help save their son and other boys from this terrible disease. In essence, a death sentence that they have been given through no fault of their own.
After four marathon bike rides in Australia and one across Cambodia, as well as concerts, walkathons and many other fundraisers, Julian and Sharyn have helped to raise just on AUD$2.5 million. The majority of this money has been allocated to two premier DMD research institutes in Australia, as well as providing funding for respite care and services into the community.
Boys with Duchenne MD like James will require more and more care going forward. They will lose their ability to walk and to feed themselves and to perform simple tasks like going to the bathroom or cleaning their teeth. They will need electric wheelchairs, breathing machines, beds that turn them during the night, ramps and lifts in the family home, and endless trips to doctors, physios and carers in a specially modified car.
The Fight Duchenne Foundation are making sure boys like James gets the attention and treatment they deserve. We are focusing on raising the money required to support families day to day as well as building and running James House.
James House will be a state of the art, all inclusive, utopian style resort for Duchenne boys and their families to come to the Gold Coast and enjoy this wonderful part of Australia. We need to raise $1 million to make this dream a reality. The building of James House on the Gold Coast will be the first home purpose built for Duchenne and muscular dystrophy families within Australia with a network of homes being planned nationwide.
Your help today will make this a reality.
