    Cambridge English: First, also known as the First Certificate in English (FCE), is an English language

    examination provided by Cambridge English Language ssessment (previously known as !niversity of

    Cambridge E"#L Examinations)$ %t is an upper&intermediate, international English language 'ualification that

    focuses on Level of the Common European Framework of *eference for Languages (CEF*)$+-

    Cambridge English. First was first developed as the Lower Certificate in English (LCE) during the /01s andwas intended to meet a demand for certification of English below that of the  Cambridge English. 2roficiency

    (C2E) exam$+- Cambridge English. First is one of the most widely taken of all the exams provided by

    Cambridge English Language ssessment and is accepted in commerce, industry, universities and higher

    education institutions as proof of everyday written and spoken English for work and study purposes$+0-

    3he exam is offered in two variations. Cambridge English. First (for adult learners) and Cambridge English.

    First (FCE) for "chools$ oth versions assess at the same level, have the same exam format (four papers) and

    lead to the same 'ualification 4 the First Certificate in English$ 3he only difference between the two versions is

    %ntroduced in /0/, the Lower Certificate in English (LCE) was the second English language exam developed

    for speakers of other languages by the !niversity of Cambridge Local Examinations "yndicate, the organisation

    that would later be known as Cambridge ssessment$ 3he arrival of thousands of refugees from the "panish

    Civil 8ar and occupied Europe into the !7 had created a growing need for language assessment$ 3he LCE was

    intended to meet a demand for the certification of an English proficiency level below that of the Certificate of2roficiency in English (C2E)$

    #ne hundred and forty&four students sat the first LCE exam on 9une /0/$ +:- 3he exam was divided into three

    sections.

    Cambridge English. First for "chools (FCE) follows the same format as Cambridge English. First for adults and

    1. Reading and Use of English ( hour B minutes)

    3he *eading and !se of English paper has seven parts and B 'uestions$ 3he paper contains texts totalling

    approximately 0,111 to 0,B11 words and candidates are expected to understand different types of text, such as

    fiction, newspapers and maga=ines, promotional and informational materials$ %n Cambridge English. First for

    "chools the text topics are targeted at the interests of school&age pupils$

    %n 2arts 4:, candidates read a range of texts and complete tasks that test their knowledge of grammar and

    vocabulary$ 2art has eight multiple&choice 'uestions related to vocabulary in a text$ 2arts and 0 involve

    completing gaps in a text (i$e$ choosing G forming the correct word for each gap)$ Each 'uestion in 2art : has a

    sentence and a 5key6 word, which must be used to complete a second sentence so that it has the same meaning

    as the first sentence$

    %n 2arts B4, candidates read a range of texts and complete tasks that test their reading ability$ 2art B involves

    answering multiple&choice 'uestions about a text, with candidates expected to be able to read a text for detail,

    opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implication and attitude$ 2art > involves choosing paragraphs to fill the gaps

    in a text, with candidates expected to demonstrate understanding of the structure and development of a text$ 2art

    involves matching statements to the correct part of a text or several short texts, with candidates expected to

    examiners$ Candidates are expected to be able to participate in discussions, express opinions, exchange ideas

    and reach decisions through negotiation$

    2art is a short conversation with the examiner$ 3he examiner will ask the candidate some 'uestions about their

    lives, focusing on areas such as work, leisure activities and future plans$ Candidates are expected to respond to

    the examiner6s 'uestions, give basic personal information about themselves and use general social and

    interactional language$

    2art ( minute 5long turn6 for each candidate, plus 01&second response from the second candidate) involves

    speaking for minute without interruption$ Each candidate is asked to compare two colour photographs and

    comment about the photographs in response to a task read out by the examiner and a prompt 'uestion written

    above the photographs$ 3he listening candidate is also asked to comment briefly after their partner6s long&turn$

    2art 0 (0 minutes) is a two&way conversation between the candidates$ 3he candidates are given spoken

    instructions and visual stimuli, which are used in a decision&making task$ 3here is no right or wrong answer to

    the task$ 3he candidates are expected to express and Hustify opinions, evaluating and speculating, in order to

    work towards a negotiated decision$

    Scoring

    ll candidates (pre& and post&1B) receive a "tatement of *esults, with those scoring high enough also

    receiving a certificate$+B- %n 9anuary 1B, Cambridge English "cale scores replaced the candidate profile and

    standardised scores used for pre&1B results$ Candidates continue to receive a CEF* level and a grade, in

    addition to their Cambridge English "cale scores$

    From 1B onwards, candidates receive a Cambridge English "cale score for each of the four skills (*eading,

    8riting, "peaking and Listening) and for !se of English, with these scores averaged to give an overall score forthe exam$+>-

    Scoring from an!ary 2"1#

    From 1B, the "tatement of *esults and the Certificate have the following information about the candidate6s

     performance.

    • score on the Cambridge English Scale for each sill (/eading ;riting 5istening andS$eaing) and for se of English

    • score on the Cambridge English Scale for the oerall e-am

    • grade for the oerall e-am

    • CEF/ leel for the oerall e-am.

    3he certificate also contains the !7 Aational Iualifications Framework (AIF) level$+-

    3he candidate6s overall score is averaged from the individual scores for each skill (*eading, 8riting, Listening

    and "peaking) and for !se of English$

    Cambridge English. First is targeted at CEF* Level , which is e'uivalent to a Cambridge English "cale score

    Cambridge English: First, also known as the First Certificate in English (FCE), is an English language

    for speakers of other languages by the !niversity of Cambridge Local Examinations "yndicate, the organisation
