BILLINGS, Mont. – The Eastern OregonUniversity football team won its third straightgame, in another offensive showcase withRocky Mountain College, 55-45.
In a game that featured over 1,100 yards ofoffense and 100 points, the Mountaineers (3-3)(3-2). Kevin Sampson ran for 201 yards andEOU finished with 612 total yards on offense.Chris Ware completed 25 of his 37 passes for 304 yards. Kasey Peters led RMCwith 409 yards through the air and completed 36 of his 56 passes.
“Our kids played very hard today,” EOU head coach Tim Camp said. “I’m veryproud of the fight this team has. There are three phases to the game, and eachphase played a part in this team victory. I’m very proud of my coaching staff.”
Sampson’s 201 yards came on 34 carries. The junior came into the game leadingthe Frontier Conference with an average of 128 yards per game on the ground.Ware entered the game leading the league in passing yards per game with anaverage of 208 yards per contest.
Michael Thomas led the Battlin’ Bears on the ground with 114 yards on 13 carries.RMC finished with 173 rushing yards, while Eastern had 308. Rocky Mountain out-gained the Mountaineers through the air, 409 to 304.
Peters found Mark Desin on 10-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring fourminutes into the game. Six minutes later Ware connected with Dillon Bedford for a17-yard touchdown strike.
The second quarter was full of scoring beginning with a 22-yard field goal fromEastern’s Nick Knell. The Bears responded with a field goal of their own from 23yards away. A pair of Ware touchdown passes to Kirk Miller and MauriceCulpepper gave the Mountaineers a 24-10 lead. Peters cut the lead to seven witha seven-yard touchdown pass to Levi Sutton with 16 seconds left in the first half.Knell would close the half with a 20-yard field goal after a great kickoff return.
The Battlin’ Bears opened the second half in dramatic fashion when Peters con-nected with AJ Tolbert for a 75-yard touchdown. Sampson then took a Ware hand-off in for a 19-yard run with 13:44 remaining in the third quarter. Peters and Suttonconnected for another touchdown from four yards out six minutes later. Ware keptthe ball for a 15-yard touchdown run on the ensuing Mountaineer possession.Peters and Desin connected again with 1:14 left in the quarter on a six-yard pass.
A Sampson 12-yard touchdown run opened the fourth quarter scoring. Thomaswould score just 18 seconds later on a 58-yard touchdown run. Neither teamwould find the endzone until Sampson ended a 14-play, 89-yard drive with a five-yard carry with two minutes left in regulation.
Ware found 10 different Mountaineer receivers Saturday, and Jake Burroughs ledwith five catches for 40 yards. Miller led EOU with 45 yards on four catches.Sutton and Tolbert each went over 100 yards receiving for RMC. Sutton caught 12passes for 125 yards and Tolbert had four catches for 106 yards.
Rocky Mountain’s Steffan Blume finished with a game-high 16 tackles. TrentonThelen and Thomas Ackerman each had 15 tackles. Marc-Avery Airhart had ateam-high 11 tackles for Eastern and Howard McDonald added 10. Max Hannahintercepted a pass for the Mountaineers.

THE SAMPSONKevin Sampson became the fourth player in school history to run for 1,000yards in a single season this year. The junior has amassed 1,135 yards onthe ground this season. The Seattle native is currently fourth on the All-Time EOU rushing list. Sampson is 89 yards away from breaking the singleseason rushing record at Eastern as well. He is fourth all-time on the EOUAll-Purpose yards in a career (2,663) list, and broke the single seasonrecord for All-Purpose yards in a season (1,679) school record last week.
THE SACKMASTERSeath Kimball currently ranks first in the NAIA in total sacks with 11.5 thisseason. The senior already owns six school records, and is on pace to acouple more before graduating. The Wenatchee, Wash. native is first in theNAIA in total tackles for loss (20.0). He has 50 total tackles this season andhas pushed opponents back with 102 yards from tackles for loss. Kimballalso ranks first in the NAIA in sacks and tackles for loss per game.
RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFFThe Mountaineers broke 30 school records a year ago, and the currentEastern squad has been doing some breaking of their own. EOU has set 14new school marks in 2010 through 10 games. The Mountaineers are onpace for several more records this year as well.
COMEBACK KIDSEastern is 3-3 this season when opponents score first and 2-2 when itscores first. In the games EOU has won this season it has outscored oppo-nents 70-17 in the final quarter. In the four losses this year, theMountaineers have been outscored 66-23 in the first quarter. EasternOregon has been outscored 101-75 in 2010 in the opening quarter of playaltogether in 2010.
BATTLE IN THE AIREastern Oregon and Rocky Mountain have two of the most prolific offensesin the NAIA. The programs lead the Frontier Conference in passing offenseper game and are near the top of the nation. EOU is 16th in the NAIA with2,389 passing yards this season, and the Bears are sixth with 2,686 yardsthrough the air. Conversely, the two passing defenses are near the bottomof the conference, RMC is fourth allowing an average of 236.9 passingyards per game and Eastern is sixth allowing an average of 275.9 yards.
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN?Eastern is playing for its seventh six-win season in the school’s 81-yearfootball history. With a victory Saturday the Mountaineers would be 6-5 forthe year. There has only been 20 seasons in the program’s history thathave ended with a record above .500. EOU last put back-to-back winningseasons together in 1979 and 1980. Eastern Oregon went 6-4 in 1979 and8-1 in 1980, the best season in the school’s history.

SHINING STARR Eastern’s Kedrick Starr has had a breakoutredshirt freshman season. He has beennamed the Victory Sports Network NationalSpecial Teams Player of the Week this sea-son, and has returned a kickoff for a touch-down and a punt for a touchdown. TheMeridian, Idaho native is first in the NAIA inkickoff return yards this season (1,003).
THIRD DOWN THUNDER Eastern is 17th in the NAIA in converting onthird downs this season. The Mountaineershave made a first down on 65 of the 149 thirddowns this season. That’s an average of 43.6percent of the time.
A NEW FRONTIERThe Mountaineers have many players atopthe conference in statistical categories. ChrisWare leads total offense and passing yardsper game. Kevin Sampson leads rushingyards per game. Max Hannah leads intercep-tions per game. Seath Kimball leads sacksper game. Nick Knell leads field goals madeper game. Kedrick Starr leads kickoff returnyards per game.
SOME OF THE BESTAlong with Kedrick Starr and Seath Kimball’srankings in the NAIA, some otherMountaineers are near the top of the nation instatistical categories. Kevin Sampson is thirdin total rushing yards (1,135) and fourth intotal all-purpose yards (1,679).
