SUBJECT: Design Designation Requests

The recent retirement ofBev Fantazzi as Traffic Data Supervisor, in Planning, and.the assumption of those duties, including Design Designations by Margaret Carpenter, presents an opportunity to briefly review how to consistently format Design Designation Requests and incorporate a couple of minor modifications.

Continue to submit the request memo from the project manager, through me, to Jerry Rafson. (Refer to attached example.) Include with the memo the Traffic Data Request Form(s) (example attached, also in Chapter 6 of the Alaska Flexible Pavement Design Manual) with the.project specific information filled out ori. the fonn(s). Attach a separate form for- each route as needed. ·

In the memo, request the following: • Current ADT • Design Year ADT (Year) • Mid-design Year ADT (Year) • Design Hourly Volume • Directional Split • Overall Percent Trucks (If available, give breakout for various truck categories on the Traffic Data Request

Form) • Special information (as needed), such as 85th percentile speed, or turning movements at specific intersections,

or special counts for special events.

DO NOT REQUEST ESALS; that is now calculated by the designers from the information that comes back in response to the Traffic Data request.

Planning will respond with their usual Design Designation sheet, sans the ESAL' s, and will fill out the appropriate data on the Traffic Data Request Fonn(s). The Materials Section is the source of contact for assistance in · calculating design loading, obtaining proper forms, in addition to pavement structure design assistance.

Additionally, please complete the attached Traffic Data Request Forms. 15-year and 30-year numbers are required for the functional and fatigue failure analysis for pavement design.
