Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: What is wrong with the church? That question brings forth a variety of answers. Perhaps, the reason some members criticize the church is because they are not living up to their promises and responsibilities. Therefore, it becomes easy to find fault with the church in order to ease their consciences. However, I ask the question, “What is right with the church?” I believe that there is far more right with the church than wrong. People criticize the 5% that is wrong and forget the 95% of good things. I wish to share a few important reasons that I believe are right about the church.
1. The church is built on the right foundation. It is built on Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Jesus never wrote a book. He never painted a picture. He never founded a university. He never erected a skyscraper. He did, however, build the church: . . “on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not overcome it.” For two thousand years the storms of the world have beat on the church but it still stands.
2. The church is right in its membership. It is more than an institution, more than an organization, more than a
building. The church is a company of believers who have been baptized upon a profession in Jesus Christ as Savior of their lives. Members of the church are not perfect, but we are following Jesus and striving to do His will.
3. The church is the mother of the best in civilization. It has always championed right and fought against wrong.
Homes for the aged, better hospitals, better care for children, etc., have all been promoted by the church. Christianity is the greatest civilizing force in the world.
4. The church is right in its message. It is the message of faith, hope, and love. The church says to the person
with no hope, “We offer Jesus Christ to you!” The church says to the person who is alone with, seemingly, no one who cares, “We love you and we are here for you!” Two thousand years have passed and Jesus is still changing lives and giving people hope.
Let us each vow to look for only the good things in the church. Lord, help each of us to so live our daily lives that we may be able to lead others to Jesus and His Church. The blessings of God be on you all,
Bro. Mike
